African-American singer Justin Timberlake calls Madonna his "ninja" on Twitter

He failed the jump test.

Also, using ninja in that context is corny as hell.

I see. I admit, I have never seen JT jump (except for maybe the hops in Bye Bye Bye). And I agree, it seems way more corny than offensive. Would you not agree, muckalucka's?

I'm surprised JT even showed up in something semi-controversy worthy.
Dude keeps his head down like 24/7

I hate ninjas , my family was killed by ninjas as a young child. I'm training in the ways of Kung fu in order to get my revenge.

I love comments such as this one, so ridiculous. As if Madonna has to prove anything to you, when it comes to success.
I never said anything about comparing Madonna to myself.

I'm comparing Madonna to former Madonna. It's a fact that she isn't as popular and relevant as she once was.

You take your straw-man argument elsewhere.

Ir was NEVER okay. I had a white guy at work using a version of "nigga" around me and promptly reported his ass. Big fuck you to anyone who think it's cute to use code words like that.

This shit with Justin is extra offensive because the guy is widely known for appropriating black culture when it benefits his image, which I guess is fine, but backs the fuck up as far away as possible when things get hot.

...so, did he use "ninja" or another word?

Why do people not understand context? They say "How is this offensive?" as though overtly substituting a random word for an offensive one while maintaining the context for the offensive statement is okay.

Ninja in itself is not offensive. But when its clearly meant to be ni**a and its used in that very context I can see how people would not like it. That being said, I still believe people LOVE to find things to complain about.

Personally, I couldn't care less.

Oh the horror. I can kinda understand the use of the actual n word could offend some people even when the intentions are innocent (see Jackie Chan in Rush Hour 1) due to the history of the word. But this is not that word (so the history is not there), and is still being used in a context of endearment.

People just looking for things to complain about.

Honestly, I had never heard of this usage until now, but I'm a 35 year old white guy who doesn't spend my time looking for ways to use code words, so that's maybe not so surprising.

To anyone who thinks this shouldn't be offensive, I don't think anyone is saying "never use the term ninja". If you're talking about ninjas, it's fine. That's not what happened here. He wanted to use "nigga", realized he'd get in trouble for it, so used this as a "cute" way of saying it. Sure, the word itself isn't offensive, but the obvious connotation is. We're obviously supposed to do the translation in our head.

Actually, it sort of reminds me of Louis CK's comments on "the n-word": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF1NUposXVQ (note, video contains offensive language)

Yep. Same way Miley did with that untalented thief Thicke got away scott free while Miley took all the flack.

White male privilege is amazing in this country.

I'd say Miley's career made out a lot better than Robin's because of the situation.

This is actually offensive now?

like... maybe? I don't know.

if so, it's like the mildest possible level of offense

like, clearly the phrase he was thinking of was "my motherfucking nigga"

but to be clean he said "my mother chucking ninja"

ninja being a substitution for the sake of mildness along the lines of damn->darn or whatever

(this is a fairly well-established substitution, btw, for those of you who take pleasure in not knowing these things)

like, he maybe shouldn't have said it, but as far as offense goes it's the tiniest of possible deals

he didn't mean anything by it, most likely
