On a scale of 1 to 10, how upset will you be if the pictures (not the 'DLC Leak') are real?
Remember, there is still potential for 5-6 characters to be unlocked (or be made DLC), if the DLC part isn't real.
10 is: I'm not going to buy smash anymore
5 is: I'm indifferent
1 is: I'm actually really happy with the leaked roster
7. Cutting a unique character like Ice Climbers, replacing actual characters that play like clones (Wolf/Lucas) with ones that are more or less the same character in costume as clones (Dr. Mario/Dark Pit) and the low number of stage selections is incredibly disappointing. And considering out of all the cut Melee characters the only one brought back is Dr. Mario...
The DLC part of it being only for Wii U sucks, and gives some proof to the 3DS holding back the Wii U version. The missing 5 part of the rumor makes it more tolerable, but man is that stage selection sad.

Probably a 7. I feel like there should be some more franchise representation in the stage selection. But the biggest issue I have would be Ice Climbers not being part of the starting roster, even if the DLC thing is true. It's just too odd.

Quick question, wasn't there a thread saying that Bill Trinen had a NeoGAF account? I feel like if he does, he lurks here every now and then or even post and we don't know it!

Duck hunt dog & bird sounds like a lame character, as does Shulk, but Bowser Jr would be interesting and I'm indifferent to Chorus Kids (but I'd rather have the Elite Beat Agents.)

I'm not at all interested in Duck Hunt Dog, Bowser Jr., Chorus Kids or Shulk, while Dark Pit and Dr. Mario should really just be alts. I'd also be really disappointed that none of Ridley, Mewtwo, Dixie/King K. Rool or Isaac made it into the game. I love Fire Emblem, but it having four reps compared to Metroid's two versions of the same character sucks. Lack of Ice Climbers, Wolf and Snake would also be really disappointing (not sure I buy the supposed DLC list).
That said, I'd still buy the game and love it. I'm already super pumped for Robin and Mega Man!
I actually love the roster. It just needs the cut Brawl characters and a Rhythm Heaven character for me to call it perfect, so basically I really want the DLC part to be true as well lol.
Although if we're accounting stages and such then yeah, that's a different case.

Also, I think Shulk doesn't have that popularity factor that all the other characters have. Sure Xenoblade is great but its the first of its kind and will probably garner a larger audience in the future but for now lets keep it down in the basement in chains.
I'm surprised so many people actually have a problem with Duck Hunt. He always seemed like a great choice to me for a retro rep, everyone loves duck hunt! Enough people even outright hate him, which shows how well known he is. The only reason insist expect him was because I didn't want to get my hopes up, he's right up there with Sheriff for me.
Also, for people hating on the clones... If you don't like Lucina, play Awakening and you might like her more. If you don't like Dark Pit, play Uprising. If you don't like Dr. Mario, play Melee. If Lucina is any indication of how much effort goes into these characters, you should be almost as mad at ZSS's shorts alt as you are at something like Dark Pit lol, Dark Pit just gets a screen slot.
Thing is I like Lucina for what she was in Fire Emblem Awakening. I loved Dark Pit's interactions with the rest of the colorful cast in Uprising. Since this is a fighting game though, what's that going to do for me when dabbling with the cast and realizing that they're both trending to have the same fighting styles of characters I'm very intimately knowledgeable about?
Also Dr. Mario is the worst. It's like a smidge above Cole/Evil Cole. :lol
DHD "hate" is interesting to me though. I haven't seen a character receive such a strong show of support and intrigue for a Smash title like this in a LONG time.
When I hear people talk about Awakening's models, I wonder how they deal with anything stylized sometimes. It's like if people wouldn't enjoy FFTactics' presentation because "where are the noses?" :lol
I never said I thought the rumor was fake, between the version of this rumor on Smash Boards a few weeks ago and now these images I'm afraid it may very well be real and it bothers me because the Dog is truly the first time I've ever felt a character does NOT belong in Smash Bros. It's not about if he'd be a fun character to play or not he simply does not deserve to be in Smash Bros and I'm afraid he will be.
I'm going to be blunt. On top of playing Smash to play my favorite fighting game design in gaming at current, I also play the games (post Melee) to get away from the ever present and overused Nintendo "sure things". I'm talking the large majority of things the fan base and Nintendo themselves at times choose to latch onto or pimp out. These also include most Mario, Zelda, Pokemon characters as well as a few I've been vocally "against" in the run up to this Smash's debut (Chrom) just because I've felt for a while that these series have been set for a while or became set with a newcomer in this game (Rosalina was a great Mario pick, especially with her Luma stand mechanics; Robin was far and away the best potential newcomer for Fire Emblem even if they still felt like the character had to get a sword).
I love those Nintendo franchises mind you, but they constantly get their dues and are always in the public mind because their games make waves and show up regularly. Smash is a strange beast however that takes characters from a franchise that was unknown to an entire hemisphere for a decade and change and makes them central figures in the cast, takes that one peripheral with the first Nintendo console from umpteen years ago into something that fits among these titans or takes the leads of one of the more "dubiously experimental" games from the same era and makes them mainstays in public perception of the franchise as part of a group. In a world where this sentiment that characters "don't belong" because they don't hit some vague barometer of popularity/having X many new releases/don't have clout like the big guys, I'd be fucked on getting to experience all that was potentially there to be offered from Nintendo's backlogs and catacombs.
That's why the sentiment "doesn't belong" really comes off as a grating and somewhat close minded (imo) criticism on a potential entrant. I saw it when people here laughed off Wonder Red, I saw it when Ashley and Takamaru were confirmed as Assist Trophies, I saw it when Shulk & the Choir Kids/Marshall became a possibility and it just never ends. You'd think that at this point people would be more open to newcomers period instead of imposing limits on what could happen. (There are exceptions of course.)

7. I don't really find duck hunt dog or bowser junior interesting, though I expect one or both would win me over after some playtime with friends. Still, basically all the other most-hypothesized newcomers would be way more interesting to me.
Dr. mario feels iffy enough when we have customizable specials, but giving a palette swap its own slot feels really crappy to me. I know slots aren't a thing, and the choice was probably between dark pit and nothing, not dark pit and a random newcomer that isn't a clone, but if that's real, my first impression would be that I'd take nothing. Does KIU have that many weapons that an extra character as an excuse to have a whole new set of 12 specials to choose from is needed?
People, all the first party and PacMan newcomers have had games from either Wii, 3DS, DS and WiiU.
- Villager (Animal Crossing New Leaf, City Folk and Wild World)
- Wii Fit Trainer (Wii Fit, +, U)
- Rosalina (Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart Wii, 7, 8)
- Little Mac (Punch-Out!! Wii)
- Greninja (Pokemon X/Y)
- Palutena (Kid Icarus Uprising)
- Mii Fighters (Tons of Wii and WiiU first party games)
- PacMan (Gosthly Adventures?)
- Lucina (Fire Emblem Awakening)
- Robin (Fire Emblem Awakening)
Next newcomers will surely only be first party and I'm sure they will be from games that have released on those consoles. So I think Dock Hunt Dog is not even going to be a playable character (unless it appeared on NES remix lol). Every character reveal has had these games artstyles in their trailers.

Somewhere between 6 and 7.
That leak would leave me with only four characters that I really like, which would probably make it my most personally disappointing roster so far (that isn't to say it's bad, but it doesn't really appeal to me). Brawl had Pokemon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Olimar, ROB, Meta Knight, Dedede, Wolf, Sonic and Snake. Melee had Zelda, Sheik, Roy, Peach, Bowser, Mewtwo, Ganondorf, Falco and Game & Watch.
It may just be a consequence of having gone through most of the big names by this installment though.

I'm Team Neutral, but 2. I notice that a lot of people seem to have big hang-ups about particular characters being playable or not. I've never had those hang-ups to any strong degree. I didn't get my Saki, my Wonder Red, probably not my Chibi-Robo, Dixie Kong, or Ray, but I did get some fun-looking surprises in the forms of Wii Fit Trainer, Greninja, and Robin.
And if the leak holds true, I'm totally cool with that. Xenoblade fans have painted an interesting picture of Shulk's potential. I always preferred Dr. Mario to regular Mario in Melee. Dark Pit may be a clone (in theory), but I don't think that's a bad thing. I'm not entirely down on the Bowser Jr. or Koopalings being playable characters, but the Koopa Clown Car creates some interesting possiblities. And having played the game years before I found out about his notoriety, I've never gotten the hate for the Duck Hunt Dog.
Not having the Ice Climbers playable (at least not at launch, going by that one leaker) would a shame, but I easily got over Brawl excluding Mewtwo, a distinct character that I actually played. I could handle not having Ice Climbers for a few months.

Tactics I am fine with since the actual battle models aren't completely ugly. With Awakening a lot of the designs look bland and just piss me off. For me it isn't even peg legs that irk me. It's when you go from badass armor that General's used to have and go straight to toilet bowl armor. Eye of the beholder I guess.

This is exactly how I've always felt about Ice Climbers. I always felt they were one of the worst options for an NES rep. The dog is from a far more popular and iconic NES game that people will actually be able to recognize.
His legacy on the NES is why I feel Dog does belong in Smash, far more than characters like Ice Climbers who have already gotten in.
I personally find clones more useful than alts. You can't have different movement physics or standard attacks with an alt, and sometimes, that makes a big difference (I prefer Wolf to Brawl Fox, for example).
If Duck Hunt is a playable character then it would be as a "retro" representative just like Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, Pit (at the time of Brawl), and R.O.B.
What if the incredible Shulk/Snake trailer idea I've heard around actually comes true?
A huge metal figure is shown to be wrecking shit and Nintendo stuff. It is revealed to be Metal Gear. Then, as other characters are trying to fight it, a Nikita missile hits it and tips it over.
Snake is revealed.
After, another metal figure appears. Snake attempts to handle it as well, but the metal figure turns, and it has a face. Snake is shocked, and doesn't seem to know what it is, or how do deal with it.
Cue Shulk with the Monado. Shulk is revealed.
So........beautiful. It makes too much sense. Which is why it probably won't happen.

Every smash has had characters raised up from obscurity. The smash game hype cycle also seems to involve brutally crushing any attempts to find patterns in the info. This could easily be a coincidence.
I've always been interested in returning veterans than newcomers in Smash anyway. It's mostly because most of my favorite Nintendo characters (Wario and DK particularly) are already in, so I'm not exactly desperate for anyone. The only newcomer I really wanted prior to the game's reveal was Little Mac, and he's in already.
I'm really open minded when it comes to newcomers, and I like every inclusion so far. Well OK, I'm actually indifferent to most of them, but the one newcomer I actually complain about is Little Mac and I think all of them deserved a spot anyway. Wii Fit Trainer and Greninja particularly ended up being characters that I didn't know I wanted, and I'm really looking forward to them the most. (+Little Mac)
That said, Bowser Jr in a clown car with Koopalings alts sounds soooo good that I really want it to happen now. Gimme it.

My rage at Duck Hunt Dog aside, the overall roster is probably a 7 out of 10
-4 points for Duck Hunt Dog
-2 points for cutting Ice Climbers
-1 point for no Snake
-1 point for no Mewtwo return
+1 point for Shulk
+2 point for Mega Man
+1 point Robin
+1 point for Greninja
Could go up to an 8 or down to a 6 if Ganondorf is still a clone or FINALLY has a unique moveset

Doesn't really work since there's a pattern of reviving old characters.
Technically speaking there also isn't anything that conclusively rules out 3rd parties. The packaging points in that direction, but there is the small possibility that the packaging is modified to include characters as they're revealed.. Persona 4 Ultimax had multiple variations of its cover art published as DLC characters were revealed. Swapping out a screen and render or two on the back of the box is about as doable.
Also, I think Shulk doesn't have that popularity factor that all the other characters have. Sure Xenoblade is great but its the first of its kind and will probably garner a larger audience in the future but for now lets keep it down in the basement in chains.
Xenoblade has a mii plaza puzzle! You gotta be famous to get a puzzle. It's like nintendo's Hollywood Star Walk.

Counting Peach/Rosalina in the starlets as mario puzzle reps, Mario gets 13 puzzle points! The amount of mario reps and stages in smash 4 kinda reflects this.
Counting double zeldas in starlets, zelda gets 5 puzzle points, which ties it with kirby!
For some of the solos (like pokemon), I expect they'll get more as the 3DS gets more games from their franchise.
For the unrepresented, I wouldn't expect any Rusty's Real Deal baseball, since it's pretty new (but it's not impossible). Everything else, I think, has the potential of at least an assist trophy(Kawashima, pocket football, Rusty), if not playable rep (rhythm heaven, xenoblade, chibi robo)
As for 3rd party, plz sakura, monster hunter rep. Plz.
For sure, the first thing half this thread instantly thought was "well we had that weird tease for Dark Pit, odds are he'll be a clone character like Lucina" I personally have no problems with clones like that to beef up the roster. I whined about Doc Mario being a bad pick for a clone as their are more deserving clones (as odd as that sounds) but from a gameplay perspective it makes sense (lets us have a Mario with his classic down + b).
The left one was shown when the 3DS was revealed and was an actual, playable thing running on the 3DS. You could control Snake during the first part of the Virtuous Mission up until you pass the bridge.
No one knows why it turned in to what appears to be a less-capable PS2 port, but the popular theory is Kojima got enamored with the Vita and MGS3DS went from being an in-house KojiPro remake to an outsourced...thing while Kojima focused on the Fox Engine and MGS HD.
Honestly my only issue is with Dr. Mario, who is literally Mario in a doctor outfit.
Dark Pit is still his own individual character, with the story of his game bringing up how he's basically just Pit with a different attitude, so you can justify him being in the game as a clone/semi-clone of Pit.
