How can PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 2 redeem itself?

Other than obvious creating a better (shorter) name so people don't think of the original crappy game.

I think Sony should give it another go, but the execution is critical here. Superbot shouldn't have been the developer behind the original team, and they should use an internal studio to create this game
or maybe contract it to Capcom for development while having a small Sony studio being responsible for design
. Also, there should be significantly more first-party characters than third-party. I don't know why they limited themselves to one character per IP. I wanted to see Chloe and Sully.

Also please refrain from saying "by not creating one." The concept could be great if executed as great as Super Smash Bros. continually is.

Hire Masahiro Sakurai.

He will do a better job at creating a Smash Bros clone,
by adding tripping.

By not existing. Oh shit, beat :(

Seriously though, it wasn't a bad game per se, but it was never going to match up to it's 'inspiration' lets face it.

Best they accept that it's not meant to be and move on imo.

I remember reading repeatedly that they had a hard time getting other companies to support the game. They couldn't get Crash, they couldn't get Spyro, they couldn't get Lara Croft, because even though these characters were strongly associated with the legacy of PlayStation nobody believed in the project.

And that's very sad.

If PSABR2 is going to be any good, they need to start by inspiring confidence in the project.

Needs to embrace the Japanese aspect of Playstation more and have way better art.

There's so much they could pull form and to see what was the result was very disappointing. Maybe they could do a collab with a dev that knows fighting games a bit more as well though I heard that the game plays fine.

Whats up with the Hate? I thought the first one was lots of fun. And the Supersystem was something else, i like it.

I'd rather they didn't bother.

But if they did, here's a simple tip to make it mega successful, or at least really good.

Copy Smash Bros 100% rather than just the 70-80% they did with the first game.

By not requiring super moves to KO. This mechanic essentially made the fighting itself meaningless in a way.
Game UI looked bland as shit. Where's the personality? The whole thing felt soulless.

Complete overhaul. Tug of war for meter so you can hit your super to win wasn't as good an idea as they thought. After all Final Smashes were one of the worst things about Smash Bros so why create a whole game based on them?

Meter play is good but I think they should study a ringout structure or go full Power Stone next time around. That last one just didn't work with that system.

PSAS was a really fun game. It was no Smash, but it had a lot of potential. Most of the problems it had have already been said (no confidence from big name devs that had characters it needed in its roster, I.E. Crash, weird art style, not enough Japanese game recognition, nobody mentioned this yet but not very good music either)

Fix those problems and it's possible to have a great game on our hands. And put Dart and Cloud in this time.

What makes you think there will be a second one?

Switching gears to PlayStation All-Stars, it clearly wasn’t the critical and commercial success everyone expected it to be. When asked about the game, Shuhei really hopes “there is a future for All-Stars,” he was happy with the game itself (such as the characters and world), and mentioned that it did “quite well” at “more than a million units globally. But it was not enough to have the momentum in terms of a business standpoint to continue to add characters or do a sequel.”

Giving a glimmer of hope for the franchise, he did add “never say never” when it came to the future of PlayStation All-Stars, saying he’d “like to see us come back to the idea,” but “maybe not the same mechanic.”

Since I never played the original, can someone tell me what was wrong with it?

People didn't like the menus. Or that they might miss with their super - it's a party brawler, made for a fun formula imo.

My main issue is the hit-confirms (combo into super) with some characters that were never fixed. Some characters are much more powerful than others.

Otherwise a great game that was missing Crash Bandicoot and a decent FF protagonist.

Copy Smash Bros 100%. Smash Bros is amazing. And it'd be cool to play it with more original Playstation characters. Also give me Crash and Spyro.

I played it recently because of PS+ and actually didn't think it was as bad as people make it out to be. With all the hate I thought it was like Fighter Within bad, but I thought it was fairly fun. It's not great by any means and certainly nowhere near what Smash is, but it's a solid 6 game to me.

3D arena fighter. Needs to separate itself from Smash. And not in a "we have to change rules around even when it sucks to avoid being Smash" kind of way.

I wanted more characters really. I think if they added these guys

I think the game would be great. I didn't like its "Final Smash" thing. Building up a Bar for special moves doesn't feel right for this type of game. If you're gonna copy Smash Bros just Copy it Completely or just make it a fighting game.

Its needs to embrace third parties far more as well. Playstation was the birth place to so many iconic IP's or iterations of certain Ip's.

Needs FF, KH, RE, MGS, DMC ect characters alongside their first party lineup.

Actually i think PS Allstars is more fun than Smash Bros. *Raises Shield*

Thats a valid opinion....I don't see why you're acting so scared lol.

I could not disagree more though.

People wanted Smash. It wasn't Smash.

I wanted a fun fighting game. It wasn't a fun fighting game. Even after trying the beta, I approached it with an open mind knowing it was going to be very different because of its mechanics, but it turned out to be extremely unbalanced (upon launch), and not very fun for me because of its inherent gameplay.

From the start, it was deemed as a "competitive" fighting game made by competitive FGC people, but it didn't even have a 1v1 online mode when it came out. It was a (hastily made) crazy party game, but it quickly unravels if one tries to actually be "serious" about the game.

Yep, th big problem is that Smash's hook the playing out of schoolyard video game arguments. Sony could have done the same if it had been able to bring in its iconic characters, many of whom are 3rd party. A PSABR with Crash, Snake, Lara Croft, and Cloud would be big, but instead we had guy from killzone and a bioshock character.

First get some real Sony exclusive characters. No Big Daddy, no Dante and no Raiden. PSASBR would've been a great reason to bring characters like Crash Bandicoot or Spyro back.

Or just don't exist I'm fine with what that guy said.

EDIT: And......never mind.

Thought the first was solid; had a fair few hours of fun with friends playing it.

Fundamentally, having the only way to eliminate opponents being special moves, and having different characters' special moves' usefulness vary wildly, changed the Smash formula substantially, and arguably ruined it. There's just not an immediate incentive not to get beaten up.

Additionally, Lara Croft, Crash Bandicoot and Abe were, I felt, pretty bad exclusions from the roster.

Seeing these kinds of characters would have made me interested in playing if the original game had them.

For the sequel to be successful they need to go absolutely crazy with the roster.

Playstation All Stars biggest problem was it didn't stick with an identity. It tried so hard to emulate the Smash style but then tried to add fighting game mechanics on top of it. It was like the appeal of Smash was that it was incredibly easy to get into, and it would make you want to get better. But it felt too shallow to be a fighting game, so no fighting game enthusiasts took it seriously.

And don't even bother if you can't get characters iconic to PS1 and PS2 in the game. Like if you can't pay the money to get Crash or Cloud? Then fuck it, don't even make it.
