Seriously, I'm stoked for him. Will always prefer the Doc over regular Mario.
Dr. Mario's a pretty iconic game that sold something like 10 million units, so I'm okay with him being in a Nintendo All-Star game, but I completely understand not wanting two of the same character.
I'll say it for the third time: the leaked roster without DLC would be a nightmare for me, but those 5 DLC characters truly make it the best roster I could hope for.

It's just.....a skin for Mario will suffice. Like, you can have Mario and Dr. Mario fight each other and not have two character places taken up :\

I never thought Ridley would get in, but I wanted him to be just so we get a second Metroid character rep.
There's no such thing as a "character place." By making Dr. Mario his own character, he'll have his own name, taunts, and celebration. There's literally no downside to it.
It bothered me at first, but it's not that weird considering we already have two Zelda's and Samus's on the roster.

Technically they are two different people but, yeah I get what you're saying.
I get that people wanted Dr. Mario to be a costume, but Sakurai's explanation of why Lucina is a her own character helps me understand why Dr. Mario could be.

Crazy people still convincing themselves that fighting games have some sort of 'roster slot budget' and a clone being playable means we lose a new full character's 'slot'? It's like Melee's leak all over again.

It's going to be amazing when Pyrosphere is announced as a retro stage for Smash 5 before Ridley is announced as a newcomer.
Sonic and subspace taking mewtwo's "slot" probably isn't that far from the truth tho lol.

Yeah, I remember reading something like Dr. Mario is an alternative reality Mario where he didn't become a Plumber.
Well, I don't understand how it works. I admit that. But it bothers me. Especially if his move set is as similar to Mario's as it was during Melee.
Dr. Mario bothered me being in Melee, too, btw. I can't explain it. It's just weird to me.

With the insane amount of hints that Shulk will be playable I'll be legit shook if he's confirmed as an AT/Trophy/etc and not a playable character

Doc can't use Fludd and his neutral specials are different. Sakurai may not have wanted to compromise Doc to not have his pills or have him use Fludd, so they brought him back as his own character.
I don't get all this Doc hate at all. Doc was able to get into Melee just fine and ended up being a great character, I don't understand why he's suddenly not only being treated like a new character, but also as some abomination who shouldn't be anywhere near smash.
The same for Metal Mario. Apparently he's his own being. My own made up lore is that Metal Mario is a side effect of using the Metal Box too much. Eventually, a part of Mario's spirit breaks off and becomes it's own robotic, soulless Metal being.
Also if the Metal Box wasn't an item, I could totally see Metal Mario being an easy clone of Mario. Bonus points if he had his own emblem from Smash 64 as his icon.

Probably because he made using regular mario redundant...tier wise. I'd be ok with both honestly.

Wow. We beat thread 10. With nothing as significant as Lucina/Robin/Falcon to show for it. Music was nice but most of this thread is a back and forth with the leaks.
I'm usually not that into Melee, but I've been watching this on and off all day and it's pretty entertaining. I guess they've earned a $5 donation from me.
I've stated in IRC that he will have Dr. F.L.U.D.D. and it will shoot Pepto which disables Wario's poots.
I would love this, thought it's hard to think of Yellow Devil being playable when he really only has two attacks.
What's supposedly the DLC again? I guess it does soften the blow (I'm guessing it is good). The thread is moving so fast it's hard to keep up with all the leaks and it seems the DLC leak has been "updated."
I also rather have clone characters similar to something like Lucina (if she wasn't a clone she might not have made it in) instead of what would be an alt in most fighting games. It's not like Mario is underrepresented in this game. Doc being cut was a good move in Brawl, he should've gotten the Project M treatment, best of both worlds really. This isn't about "him taking a slot from a newcomer," might as well throw in Squirtle and Ivysaur.

It just feels like a lazy clone, unlike Lucina and Dark Pit (going by the leak) Doctor Mario is not popular or relevant in the main line Mario games which makes him stick out when you're looking at the clone trio. Gameplay perspective yeah it makes sense and I get it, but from a character perspective I'd rather have Pichu or Roy back as a clone before Doc Mario, double so if he's in but Ice Climbers, Wolf, and Lucas were cut.

To be fair, the pace for Thread 10 slowed down considerably since the big reveal of that period happened before the start of that thread and nothing else of real note happened during that thread's run. There's still a pretty big possibility that another bomb could be dropped within the back-half of this thread, especially if said bomb (de)confirms the leak.
I mained Dr. Mario in melee and I hate the idea that he's back over other characters. It's Mario in a doc outfit vs. actual characters.
Though if he plays literally like Mario minus the FLUDD, with pills and a different weight like Melee- I'll probably be happy I got my old playstyle back.

In this particular case, it's likely Dr Mario was an alt costume until late in development, around the same time Lucina got pushed to full character, and then a decision was made to make small alterations to Mario's moveset and give him a seperate roster slot.
In an interview about Melee's development, Sakurai revealed the clones were not planned from the outset. When development was nearing its end, they had to make a decision. Do they work on implementing King Dedede, or do they take that same amount of development time and make SIX clone characters.
Sakurai opted for more characters instead of less. We got Roy, Pichu, Dr. Mario, Falco, Young Link and Ganondorf.
That was a trade. We lost a character. But we got six in his place.
Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, Lucina, and any other clones in the new game were made because more characters is better than less. The difference this time? They can finish whoever they had to sacrifice for all these clones and release them as DLC. It's a win-win scenario for everyone.
Dr. Mario being left as a costume would not have meant someone else got in, it just means we'd have one less character.

The thing is though is that he takes significantly less work than any other character. After what Sakurai said about Lucina, Doc getting in isn't all that surprising.
I'm pretty sure he didn't take anyone else's spot and was added just for the sake of more characters and variety. (If you will.)

This may be partially true, but the fastest day ever of SmashGAF (as defined from the start of the thread, not starting from midnight according to some random time zone), was a result of the pre-PotD spam recently as opposed to an actual megaton.

What I'm wondering is, if Alph is an alt of Olimar, they didn't just try to modify Alph to be a clone. Replace Purple Pikmin with Rock Pikmin (that are just slightly different stats than Purple Pikmin). Remove White Pikmin from his moveset, and make some other minor changes.
