When Luigi was revealed he came with a note that was something like "In previous games we've never revealed unlockable characters before release, but for the Year of Luigi we can make an exception", which says to me that at least Luigi, if nobody else, is an unlockable that they've revealed ahead of time.

We don't know with anyone else. It would be highly odd to have Marth and Lucina both be starters considering she's a clone of him.

Eh, the wording is a little different:

A REAL pic of the day--Luigi joins the battle! In prior games, we've never introduced Luigi before release, but why not? This is the 'Year of Luigi,' after all.

I think your interpretation sounds most likely from that, but it could also make sense to interpret it as "Luigi's no longer a secret character."

That's not true. They never mentioned unlockable characters, just the fact that they haven't ever revealed Luigi before release. He could still be unlockable, sure, but it was never specifically stated as some people think.

I think a new render will kill it. For one thing, the renders are used for the amiibo poses so they can't probably change them willy-nilly. Plus their in-game trophies and whatnot could be posed that way. Though if I were Sakurai and knew of the leak, I'd probably just not show a veteran until release if it means confirming it.

Both Captain Falcon and Toon Link show up on the official Japanese digital pre-buy box thing, so they aren't unlockable.

I've said it many times, but I have a strong feeling that every character revealed so far is a starting character save maybe the third party characters.

if a bunch of stages in the leak are missing in the final game, then even if the roster ends up right it wouldn't matter lol

Remember when Melee's secret characters were first leaked? I posted that story. What a wild time. I didn't have the info about characters bein clones tho, when I posted our info Planet GameCube posted theirs, they had the clone deets. It was nuts tho, Nintendo contacted us and made us take it down, I edited it to not actually say any character names but just obviously suggest what kind of characters they might be.

I remember not actually knowing who Mr Game and Watch was, and putting a picture of Disk Kun next to him. "Close enough."

You know, Dr. Mario's possible inclusion really bothered me until I saw this; I just really didn't like the idea of two characters that are the same person being in different slots. Didn't even occur to me we already have that with Zelda and Samus! Doesn't bother me anymore, though he could still just be an alt.

Technically, Sheik never appeared on TP so you can make the argument that it's a different Zelda even if the costume is based on Twilight Princess' concept art.

I also like to believe that the Samus in Smash is SA-X.

Yeahhhh but a lot of those, like Open Your Heart, Sonic Boom, and Super Sonic Racing, are retreads of songs that were already in Brawl.

I guess there's City Escape Classic which could be neat but if I had to choose another Sonic Adventure 2 song I'd say Live and Learn fills our quota of lyrical cheesiness as is.

I just hope that even if there are basically no new arrangements like in Brawl, the sound staff realize that between Mario & Sonic, Sonic Generations, and Sonic Racing, there are plenty of serviceable remixes they could use in the game with minimal effort.
