Saw this on Twitter, and felt it was worth discussing:

Ebosse, who was 24, was declared dead after being taken to hospital in Tizi Ouzou, east of the capital Algiers.
The JS Kabylie striker, who had scored in a 2-1 home defeat by USM Alger, was hit when fans started throwing objects from the stands as the teams returned to their changing rooms after the game.
The Algerian interior ministry has ordered an investigation.
It has not been confirmed what hit Ebosse, but one Algerian paper said that home fans, angry at their team's defeat, were throwing rocks.

Read more at BBC.

This is ridiculous. It was just a small game, and the fans of the host country felt they should hurt players from the visiting team with rocks.

To add to what Aegus said, it was a home league game. JS Kabylie's (the team Ebosse played for) own fans where the ones that appear to have killed him in frustration over the 1-2 defeat in which Ebosse scored the home team's lone goal.

If it turns out it was their own fans that were throwing objects that killed Ebosse, I'd hope the ramifications are severe.

Same thing happened before the playoff qualifier for the 2010 World Cup between Algeria and Egypt. It was so bad it had to be played in neutral ground in Sudan. Maghreb football son.

But if it turns out to be the opposing teams fans?

I'm sure you didn't really mean it that way.. but whoever did it punishment needs to be severe.

I'm not a football/soccer aficionado but isn't this really common for "fans" to throw shit at players? Like, I'm not surprised by this story, I feel like this shit happens all the time. Am I off base here?

Yeah, the ramifications should be severe either way. I had put in "...such as playing the rest of the season behind closed doors" but I'm not sure if I've given enough thought to determine if that's the right level of response, so I edited it out without thinking how the rest of the post looked.

Football fans do throw a lot of shit but rocks are absolutely disgusting as they're probably aiming to injure and not just disrespect.

Trying to generalise football/soccer fans is a mistake and trying to find a common element among them outside of following the sport is futile. The sport is played in almost every country in the world and it's the local culture in the area in which it is played which is going to have a greater effect.

the best way to send a message to get this crap to end is to suspend ALL games for a year or more

make it be a wake up call to these idiots that watching soccer is a privilege.

Ugh... This just reminded me of that Brazilian amateur soccer match where the referee was beheaded. *shivers*

I remember that. I just can't wrap my head around this... I love football and sure, I get mad / passionate about it, but to lynch someone like that? I just...

Same with this instance... Disgraceful

Edit: Didn't know the ref had stabbed someone. Still...

Yeah fans in north Africa are pretty intense. They're awesome most of the time, but things can get scarily nasty when the mood changes. Throwing missiles on to the field is not unusual at all, but I've never heard of anyone dying or even needing more than bandaging. Must be a freak hit.

The Algerians are going to have to deal with the hooligan problem, but have to take care not to inflame situations, particularly as JS Kabylie is the standard bearer of the berbers. It can turn political very easily

Why are there rocks inside of a football/soccer stadium? Do they even bother with basic security checks in places like that?

This is where they play according to google.

Smuggling something in doesn't exactly look like the hardest thing in the world, not that I think they have great security in Algeria either way.

Is there such a thing as rock detectors? And if so do you expect them to be used at some random stadium in Algeria?

They don't bring missiles with them, they throw what they can get hold of inside the stadium. With a lot of these crumbling old venues, there's plenty of rubble that can be picked up or broken off.
