It's not too surprising. There's already exclusive stages, upping that to characters will make it all the easier to sell both.

Remember, the Polar Bear and Sneaky Spirit are in Smash Run, so Ice Climbers and Chorus Men are still very viable as either DLC or unlockables not shown in the ESRB footage.

Well fucking great. Now I'm in a position where I won't be happy until Lucas DLC is confirmed for true. Meanwhile we get Bowser Jr and goddamn Duck Hunt dog taking up original character slots. The one Nintendo character everyone despises in his original game. Who hasn't tried to shoot the dog?
And Dr Mario gets Melee Mario's moveset. So he has spin attack. Which makes him superior.
My three mains are all gone lol

The 3DS version is probably going to be vastly more popular, so you would think that version is the one that would get any extra effort or more content. Or maybe do just the opposite in an effort to sell the Wii U version to try to keep the 3DS version from cannibalizing most of it's sales.
Either way I don't think Sakurai would change his mind on that. And I doubt the Wii U version will have more stages or modes, they will probably be pretty equal all things considered.
He could also have completely different specials aside from the up B.
neutral, side, and down specials could use the 9 weapon types from Kid Icarus Uprising (3 variations each)

if it's really the 3ds fault that the Ice Climbers are getting cut, then more power to the Wii U with exclusive characters.

The original 12 characters will always be represented in Smash
... well, if there were a character out of the 12 that would be cut, it'd probably be Jigglypuff, so I guess your worries aren't unfounded.

Where is the idea of exclusive characters coming from? I thought Sakurai had been pretty clear that both versions will have the same roster.

Him and Isaac were some of my most wanted characters. After seeing these videos, all it did was provide the final reason against my purchase especially with Ganon still having his stupid fucking clone moveset. Oh well, maybe next time.
More characters on the way confirmed.
It baffles me that almost a month away from release there's still stuff to show.

You know, if the DLC leaks are fake, it's entirely possible that people simply haven't unlocked Lucas or Wolf yet, or that Ice Climbers may have been changed and made unlockable as a result of the 3DS' limitations.
We're going to be getting news even after the game's released, judging by the idea of DLC. It's pretty brilliant, actually, they'll never let the hype die down this way.

Sakurai also said once that he would not include Animal Crossing fighters because they are not suited to fighting.
But Bowser,Pit, and ZSS among other were changed a little bit. Though we have yet to see all Ganondorf moves.

If the Ice Climbers are at the end of all this not back, not even in DLC form, i will be seriously pissed of the 3DS version existing and I will be sad that it validates my statement from so many months ago, the 3DS version has seriously fucked up development of the game.
