Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XIII: Leak Dynasty

Between the Gematsu leak (which has still gotten 9 of 11 characters correct), the Sneaky Spirit enemy, and Sakurai’s love for music in general, I’m genuinely surprised there isn’t a Rhythm Heaven character or at the very least a stage. There have been three installments since Brawl’s planning period plus an arcade port — it’s a fairly major new Nintendo IP. I’m sincerely hoping we haven’t seen the full cast.

The part of the leak I dislike the most is how we're all robbed of reaction posts and threads for the remaining newcomer trailers. We're all worse off for that, and it was only three weeks too.

a constant drip feed? Oh come on. People just want stuff they can talk about, not shitty new items reveal or whatever.
The damn game is coming in less than a month and we're not even allowed to know all the characters?
Thank you, leaker-san.

Yes, let's continuing celebrating a guy who actively ruins a friend's job and trust. Disgusting.

Also, what I hate about this reveal is the people are already saying they don't want this game because of the roster. Or people are now getting so overloaded that people won't play the game because they feel that this experience will be better.

If this is true, why choose to include some unlockable characters in the DVD and not others?

The game was rated by ESRB a long time ago. The likely scenario is that some characters in the build shown were just not ready yet. Maybe some were kept hidden as a safety precaution too in the case of a leak; who knows really? There's a lot of things Nintendo can hold internally, but you never know once a game like this goes outside of headquarters.

All I'm saying is it's plausible that ESRB doesn't know everything, and it's clear they don't need to know everything, because as they say on their site, it's a tenuous process to go through every single facet of a game. It takes up the developer's time and it takes up the rating board's time. All they need is enough information to rate the game.

From what I've gathered, he originally shared it with a small group of internet friends who were not supposed to let it get further than that. It's supposedly been in circulation for months among those individuals, which is how we got the text leaks.

Ironically enough, someone ended up betraying his trust.
And this is why NDAs are, well, NDAs. You tell it to someone, they're going to tell other people. I mean, obviously it sucks for the guy, but he knew what would happen.

my most wanted characters were lyn from fire emblem and saki amamiya from S&P,both ended up as AT though :(

I've wanted Lyn since before Brawl. She got AT'd in front of me twice. Thirst unquenched for that play style. I latched on to Takamaru (already knew about him from the same time Lyn became a thing for pre-Brawl), only to watch him get gloriously disconfirmed and Assist Trophied the day after the weekend Nintendo drummed up hype for the first international release of his game at a fairly packed venue (San Diego Comic Con).

Regulus Tara and I have an unspoken bond solely because of our desire to see S&P characters playable in Smash.

I am clearly masochistic.

I guess I just don't get why Nintendo wouldn't include all of the characters in the ESRB video if they still included ones that haven't been revealed yet, like DHD, Shulk, and Bowser Jr.

Mainly because they don't have to, to protect from leaks, yadda yadda.

They only have to show content that could affect their rating to the ESRB so while all of the stuff we've seen could just be final, there's no reason why they have to be.

I like talking about items.

Since I'm a real man.

How does it hurt the development team? They made the game, their wages are getting paid.

Does a man really deserve to get his life ruined by a giant corporation (Who has a history of antitrust and monopolization charges against it. Why root for Goliath?) because he is excited to share information to people, like those in this thread, who eat it up at his expense? Is he profitting at all?

Like you said, the game is coming out in a couple weeks. Marketing isn't harmed. None of this is even confirmed. I bet the marketing team will still update the website and Miiverse just as planned. I can imagine Sakurai is a bit perturbed, but if it's enough to want to go after some nameless employee and sue him for more than he's worth? He can get over it.

Leakers are good shit in my book. For both the consumer and in this case, Nintendo. It's amazing free marketing, judging by the enormity of the response to this thread and throughout the internet.
Trade secrets are kind of a big deal.

Exactly!

Rip actual decent hype reactions instead of 'OK (character) was confirmed'

That mega man reveal. Holy shit.

Man if I had this info and a job at Nintendo, I would be so tight lipped it wouldn't even be funny. Especially if you have a family to support.
It hurts to think of how dumb I would feel if I had to explain that I was fired over that to my family.

"So I lost my job..."
"Why?"
"So everyone on the Internet could know the Smash 4 roster three weeks early."
". . ."

Maybe in case of situations like these? I know in the case of test builds with Brawl they proportioned the roster so as to not give away all the characters.

They were in a presentable, playable state while others weren't? There's still internal debate over what to keep in the game and what to postpone as DLC which would be rated by the ESRB later separately?

Good thing I've still got my WIi U stages and music to look forward to. Characters are not my highest priority.

But yes, the reactions with everyone will be missed. Hopefully the trailers themselves deliver. I mean we knew Captain Falcon was returning but his trailer was sill "hype" as the youths say.

The leaker deserved to get in trouble. Yet, how many people were actively feeling this way, as opposed to chomping at the bit for more and more leaks? While he is in control of his own actions, the only reason people are tempted to leak information is because people like us demand it constantly.

I'd rather they did a monthly/bi-monthly half hour stream going into details about how mechanics and characters work in the new game rather than PoTD's.

Or even both, a lot of information in the PoTD's means nothing to me compared to hearing more about the base mechanics, how characters work and custom moves.

This is my only guess:
DLC or updates that will be appended to an existing, previously-rated product need only be submitted to ESRB for rating if their content exceeds that which is in the existing "core" product. Otherwise, the rating originally assigned to the core product is applicable to the appended content as well. Where, however, the content exceeds the rating assigned to the core product, it must be submitted to ESRB and a different rating may be assigned.

OK, thanks guys :)

All accounts so far point to MFL being a BSer, and there have been a bunch of contradicting words about remaining characters.
What's the deal with that? I saw someone mention an All-Stars image?

I don't care how we get the Ice Climbers, they just need to be in the game.

Alright guys, obviously anything could change, but if this is indeed our final list of newcomers:

How do you feel Smash 4 did with it's newcomer selection? I made this picture so you try and think of the newcomers as a whole, not just the ones leaked.

Me personally? A few missed opportunities aside, fucking stoked. 15 new fighters is nothing to scoff regardless of clones, and you could even bump that number to 17 if you count the Mii Fighter as 3 different characters.

Aside from Dark Pit, it's pretty great.
The problem I have with Dark Pit, it's not that he might have a clone or something, but that he seems a fucking awful choice, plus the salt of Metroid, a franchise with 25+ years with lots of games, having only 2 (Would be one if he didn't split up) reps, while Kid Icarus, a franchise that was dead for a long time, with only 3 games, getting 3 reps, with DP being a new character. And I don't even want Ridley. I would fucking love a Chozo or maybe a Luminoth. Heck maybe even Rundas, a Ing or a Space Pirate. And there's also Dark Samus/Metroid Prime. And if it had to be a Kid Icarus character, put Phosphora or Pandora, for God's sake. Or Magnus. Even Thanathos is a better choice than a fucking Pit recolor. I can't even imagine a Final Smash for Dark Pit.

I am salty as fuck.

Why is why I mentioned that they aren't exactly the, but they have something similar going for them.

Rosalina & Luma, both have that similar trait to Ice Climbers, as where they both attack together.

Olimar & Pikmin, basically mentioning how there is 4 things on screen, but adding 3 other players. Welp.

There is no footage of Duck Hunt. Sadly.

I wouldn't say so for Rosalina & Luma as Luma is used in Rosalina's attacks. If anything Rosalina & Luma imo is a different take on Olimar and his Pikmin. In that Luma is also essentially an item that she's using to fight. That's why imo Rosalina could be added in her current form and why Olimar was stripped of some of his Pikmin.

As you said the amount of things on screen were probably a problem, although that would be purely because of the 3DS version. It was probably the main reason Olimar had his Pikmin cut since with his original Pikmin count there would be a total of 24 things on screen for a 4p match (Without items on FD). Considering the difficulties in keeping track of characters on the 3DS version without and sometimes with the black outline having 24 things on screen to keep track of on the 3DS screen would be a nightmare. There's also the possibility that the 3DS simply can't have that many things on screen while maintaining a stable framerate considering that assist trophies run at 30fps compared to everything else.

For the Ice Climbers i can see it being a combination of things on screen + AI. Since in a 4p match you'd have 4 player controlled characters and 4 AI characters mimicking the player controlled characters. Wasn't the only time that Melee suffered a frame rate dip when 4 Ice Climbers were on screen at once and fighting?

With that in mind and the 3DS' limitations it wouldn't surprise me if they are cut. What is possibly annoying or would be is if they are or were also cut from the WiiU version to maintain roster parity -_-

Christ. Ssb is the only series to provide a constant drip feed of information out there but players just want more, more, more. How depressing. Why even bother.

I'd rather find out that the guy standing in front of me is going to be the last one to get food sooner rather than later. I'm happy that I don't need to bother checking Miiverse every weekday.

No sympathy for the leaker though, he fucked up and deserves everything he gets.

The leaker deserved to get in trouble. Yet, how many people were actively feeling this way, as opposed to chomping at the bit for more and more leaks? While he is in control of his own actions, the only reason people are tempted to leak information is because people like us demand it constantly.
Considering how many games Nintendo releases and how this is pretty much the only time we've had an ESRB, I'd say he doesn't have much excuse. Sure there's demand, but literally everyone else managed to resist and avoided leaking things.

And sure, if you base your morality on technical contracts produced by giant corporations and signed by force (coercion by threatening job security and legal action IS force), he deserves it. But if you're a human being capable of empathy, he doesn't!

Sorry but lmfao what am I reading here? Nondisclosure and confidentiality is part of his duties and responsibilities at his job. Nintendo is PAYING him to do these things. He breaks that agreement that he voluntarily entered into, and you're saying it's unethical that they take rightful and legal action against him? He's scamming them of their money, dude.

I don't even...

Thanks @ other responders about finding leakers.

I'm dead serious. If we lived in my ideal world we'd know the entire cast the day the game is announced. Then I can focus more on being excited to see how characters look and play instead of being PLS GOD LET MEWTWO BE IN PLS GOD LET MEWTWO BE IN PLS GOD LET MEWTWO BE IN PLS GOD LET MEWTWO BE IN! Cause I already know if the characters i want are in or not

Your world sounds horrible, no offense. It's good that we get this kind of escalating information, especially from Nintendo. The last thing any of us should want is to have all the cards laid out creating this unrealistic expectation and then being disappointed when things aren't quite as they seem. If we had all the characters told to us, but then they had to be cut for any reason at all, do you think that the outrage of that would be worth the trade?

I liked the mystery and speculation that we've had. I liked being surprised at just how some later characters were revealed and what they could do, and how our expectations were not always what we thought they were. I liked being introduced to a concept and going from 'what the f**k is this?' to 'Why did I not know I wanted this?!'. What you want is to rip out that speculation and excitement and then you expect the anticipation and hype to hold out from reveal to release?

Man if I had this info and a job at Nintendo, I would be so tight lipped it wouldn't even be funny. Especially if you have a family to support.

Same. Freakin. Here. It's not worth it to me. I'm already playing the final game EARLIER than most everyone else I'm not gonna jeopardize my career!

I think you mean the Americons.

Oh ho ho! It's ok BY2K, at least your tag isn't half of the dumb ones from those who frequent OT section. We can all chuckle about that in the future of GAF.

Hiding characters in a fighting game always seemed weird and awkward to me. I'd much rather have every fighter revealed at the start and available for pitched combat. I still have nightmares about MVC2 and my memory card dying.

I wish I could give him a hug and tell him it's going to be ok.

Likewise. I might try to hug him at Press Start instead, haha.

I'm sad that Lucas got the axe because the MOTHER fanbase is pretty much divided in half on whether Mother 2 or 3 was the best game (with a few hardliners who like Mother 1), so it's sad that now only Mother 2 gets a rep.

I fall on the Mother 3 side so I'm sad we're going to get little to no representation from that game ;_;

This is what hurts the most if this truly is the final roster. It's going to be a brilliant game, and I'm already super-excited about the character selection! I just hate to think that a character from my favorite game of all time got cut from Smash 4/5. :(

What are Japanese fans saying about this?

Lots of people in disbelief, bitching about it getting leaked (since whoever shared the information was violating an NDA) and lol'ing at DHD and Bowser Jr.

Especially considering how much it seems like he enjoys the marketing (or rather the revealing of info a little at a time).

I'm sure he was expecting it though. Maybe not quite this soon. But it isn't the world's end.

The important thing to remember is that we still have Smash for Wii U coming up, and if it does include DLC, there's still a ton of stuff we have yet to see!

Yeah, I think it's safe to say that if all of the info on the game were revealed the day the game was shown, people would get excited for like a week and then forget about it until the game comes out. The way it is now keeps the hype going almost the entire time. I love it.

Me and my buddy are already planning a Male Wii Fit Trainer / Duck Hunt Dog team called Man's Best Friend; you bitches better be ready to get rocked online.

EDIT: Haha, why this one for top of the page...
