EDIT: Answering the above, no because there's like dozens of different Links, I'd prefer if Toon Link had moves based more on Wind Waker stuff like the Deku Leaf and Wind Waker Songs, at least give him a unique final smash. I also don't like the name "Toon Link" because it's like saying "Link, but in a cartoon look!" instead of "A different hero" to the audience, but I can't think of a better name.

I like Lucina and Dark Pit having their own slot since they're their own character. But I don't like Dr. Mario, he's literally Mario in a Doctor's suit. He should be a costume. And I find it weird that the Koopalings will be Jr.'s alts. Will the name change? Will the VA change?

I can understand "too many", but "way too many"? Let's remember that of the four characters, one of them was a simple clone of another, and the two veterans largely didn't have any major changes done to them. Intelligent Systems is also a major company for Nintendo, so it's only right to represent its main series so well.

As shocking as this might sound, I don't hate any of the characters on the roster. Somehow Sakurai with his voodoo magic even managed to take a character I cannot stand in Bowser Jr. and make me absolutely adore him as a fighter in less than thirty minutes. Every character has been such a breath of fresh air, and even the few clones we have I'm sure will be further differentiated through custom moves that their presence won't be that bad.

Dark Pit was technically already in Brawl, so at least this time around he'll have new moves. And that's okay with me because I didn't like Pit too much.

And can someone explain to me how Bowser Jr. will have the Koopalings as alts? Will the name change to each respective Koopaling? I would find it strange to play as Roy and see it still say "Bowser Jr." --- but at least I'd get to play as a Roy in Smash Bros. again.

For me it's because:

- Literally is the same entity as Mario, only visual difference is lab coat
- Only differences in skill set are pills, tornado (don't get the love for this move) based on Melee, could see bigger changes here though, and maybe some weight/physics changes
- Could have very easily just been an alt, seems redundant given the above two points

Doc Mario should have his own icon if he's Melee Doc without FLUDD. As for the Koopalings, seeing as Lucina was going to be a full alt for Marth with a different voice and such, I can imagine the same applying for them.

why does canon matter?

As long as Dr.Mario plays differently even slightly ala Toon Link, it shouldn't matter. Dr.Mario is a part of Nintendo History and Mario himself is big enough to get two Mario's in the game regardless

In my case, it's that Toon Link actually felt very different to me than regular Link vs Mario and Dr. Mario. I don't know if there was a difference in the specs, but when I pick up Melee Mario and Dr. Mario feel exactly the same, while when I pick up Brawl Link and Toon Link feel different.

Anyone who had Dr. Mario as a main in Melee could more or less (minus that one move) switch to Mario and be perfectly fine. I don't see Link and Toon Link as that interchangeable, though maybe stats-wise they are and I'm just insane.
