Asus ROG Swift PG278Q monitor, 1440p/144hz/G-Sync

Is the PG278Q different from the PB278Q?
Only the latter is available in my country.

Will this work properly with my laptop? My laptop has dual GTX 780M.
I just read about screen tearing and vsnyc, and the stutters makes gaming irritating.

PB278Q is a vastly different monitor. It's a PLS monitor without any of the swift's benefits.

Unfortunately 780M doesn't support GSYNC at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if they add support at some point in the future.

ULMB...I guess I gotta try this too. Gsync was so smooth in BF4. I was about 120-130 FPS with my Titan Blacks. No tearing and extremely responsive.

If ULMB is better at higher FPS..I..dunno how I'll respond

Thanks a lot for the quick reply. Saved me a trip to the store.

This is the last post Smokey will ever make. He is already dead.

Don't forget to hit the store and pick up a dozen disposable tape recorders or so - gotta record those audio logs of the final days.

Apparently, it was available for a very short time at Newegg before it sold out. Damn it, I want this monitor!

Gonna check if it becomes available on Amazon soon. If not, I'll try a local Frys or TigerDirect store tomorrow. I'd rather not pay the additional ~$80 in tax that a local store is going to charge though.

Welp I wasn't looking for them but I found them anyways, dead or stuck pixels. I'd say about 4 to 6 maybe, its really hard to tell how many. Pretty lucky placement though, off center and about 5% from the top of the screen. Tried a few methods to fix them, might try one or 2 more soon but its fine really. Just hard to un see them now.

Send it back. You don't pay $800 for a monitor to get bullshit.

Send that thing back. Manufactures need to make flawless stuff at this price range. I send them back if there is even one stuck/dead pixel. Would make me go crazy otherwise.

I could send it back except the likelihood of me getting a replacement in the next few months is basically zero with the expected supply shortage. Also they will only take back a monitor that has more than 5 stuck pixels so I would need to get a magnifying glass out to actually count them. Its not worth it to me, 3 to 5 stuck out of 3,686,400 pixels. I think you guys are more upset about it than I am lol.

Just put on a pure white screen. It should be easy to count the stuck pixels. A pixel is pretty easily noticeable. 3 to 5 is a really rotten deal for a new $800 monitor.

We just don't want to see someone who paid that much money for a monitor get screwed due to inaction. You don't care now. You might care later. Better to do it while you have the chance than potentially regret it later on.

yay, i'm no longer the only swift owner on the block.

I've been so impressed with G-Sync i haven't even gotten around to testing ULMB in a month because getting rid of tearing was my number one "must have". It delivered on that dream and i've been super pleased with it.

If only there was a way of activating G-Sync / ULMB in game via a button like you can do with the Mhz switching button.

Whats a good game to test the benefits of G-Sync vs ULMB?

I'm running an OCd 780 Classi and OCd 4770k.

I don't have a G-sync monitor yet but I wouldn't look at from the perspective of which is better, but which one is better for a specific game. You can achieve "close to" the effects of G-sync if you're able to always match frame rate to refresh rate and using V-sync (double-buffered if you're always maintaining the desired frame rate). In such cases, with the exception of the difference in input lag, it may be beneficial to use ULMB instead. In cases where your frame rate fluctuates or input lag is a major concern then G-sync likely wins out.

I wonder how long (realistically) until I can buy a 4K, 120hz, G-sync, and non-TN monitor. Any estimations for when we'll see DisplayPort 1.3? Is it sad that the Oculus Rift (CV1) will likely be my best display by the time it comes out?

From trying ULMB yesterday , the panel has to run at 120hz and below otherwise you cant use it. Of course you also need to disable gsync in the NVCP. It also makes the screen noticeably darker. I'm sure there's some technical reason why that is. I tried it with BF4 and I didn't realize notice a huge difference over Gsync. Both are extremely smooth.

Because ULMB is actually strobing the backlight so the light is actually physically on less time than it normally would be. That's why it decreases blur, because it actually has the light off during the transition time between screen refreshes (I guess based on the grey-to-grey spec of the monitor? not sure about that).

Just called my Frys. They said it stealth released yesterday and sold out almost immediately. They only got 3 in. Next shipment isn't until September 6th. Tigerdirect told me they didn't have any in store, but I can pre-order online. No expected ship date though, so I'm gonna hold off on that.

All I can hope for is that Amazon or Newegg gets them in stock I suppose. :/

So I checked newegg this morning, had it listed as out of stock but had a notify button. I added myself to be notified when it was back in stock. Later I found myself on their front page and there's a giant ad for the monitor there (right side).

I clicked into the ad and there was a "buy now" button. I clicked it and it went back tot the product page, but this time it had a backorder button. I back ordered it, went through checkout and everything and it says "usually ships between 3-5 days" on the order now.

Checked back on the product page later and it's back to out of stock with the notify button. I guess they started taking orders for a while but aren't sure about supplies and don't want to take too many? I dunno, I'm just gonna wait until the order goes through rather than stress about hunting one down at my local Frys, which is thirty minutes away

It went up on sale on newegg at 12 EST. Sold out within minutes. Was able at least to Back-Order it. Hopefully it will ship by end of the week.

would this be good for retro gaming since it has such a low response time? similar to crts and what not

probably no easy way to hook them up

It's good for old games because gsync fixes what I consider to be the biggest problems with emulation, but for using real hardware you'd need to come up with some Framemeister to DisplayPort setup. Definitely not what you're looking for.

I can't believe how much I want something I didn't even know existed a few days ago. Hopefully they can keep up with demand and get this sucker in stock somewhere.

ULMB aka Ultra Low Motion Blur reduce the motion blur by strobing (low persistence basically) the picture each time it refresh by turning it off. Basically the reason it's darker is because it's off a fraction of a second while strobing.

Some people pray by this because it add a lot in motion clarity. The downside is a less bright image.

For you to understand how it work picture this: When you move your mouse really fast you can see more then 1 cursor. The reason is that the pixels that where showing it before don't have time to become exactly the color under the cursor.if it was instant then you would see only 1 cursor all the time. The pixels on the display take some time to change and strobing basically cut the amoutn of motion blur by a large margin.

From what I've heard this monitor isn't really bright enough to enjoy ULMB, but the eizo one is (only 1080p but VA pannel)

Woot! Mine is finally arriving today. I've been reading about this display since January. It should be a pretty nice replacement for my trusty Samsung 2233.

I've pre-ordered this through tiger direct. It's not going to be fully useful to me until the new Nvidia cards launch in a few months, so I figure I can wait a few extra days or weeks to get mine, even though even on my HD7970 this is going to be a big upgrade over my 60hz 1080p 24 inch panel.

This is going to be amazing for pinball. Do any 3D vision owners know if this works in 3D in portrait mode? I mean, I see no reason why it shouldn't...

Informative, thanks.

No more proud Swift owners taking pictures of their new purchase with a loaf of bread on top?

I am disappoint.

Made me laugh

Any chance someone with one of these bad boys could try playing a vertical screen rotation game (Crimzon Clover or something like DoDonPachi in MAME) and tell me how the viewing angles are? On my old VH236H they're good enough as long as I'm slightly to the left of my monitor, lol. I'm hoping it's better (though obviously not perfect) here.

I'm interested in this too for pinball related reasons.

It's a TN, so the viewing angles are pretty terrible in that orientation.

Yeah, but I'm curious as to how it will compare with existing TN's that I've used in that orientation. If it's at least as good as what I have I'll be able to deal with it, but that's admittedly pretty hard to gauge without seeing it in person.

I'm really trying to decide whether to go crazy and get this monitor, or go cheap and get something like:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236335

If I were to go cheap, would that be a good product for the price? ($135 after promo code and rebate)

for the record, i have a GTX 780 card

For everything I've seen about gsync, it's totally worth it. I'm even hoping it has dramatic improvement in older games like Dead Space where vsync lag in unbearable but so is tearing due to the strobe lights and shit.

Newegg just called to verify I made the order since I recently moved. Kind of weird call, but then I got an email saying it went through verification and my card has been charged...not sure if that means they're shipping it soon or what. They normally don't charge your card unless they're shipping it right?

When the page was first put up it only had ~14 in stock. I doubt that's all Amazon recieved, so they'll probably be putting more up later.

(The reason the stock number keeps jumping around is most likely due to their infrastructure, not because it's being stocked and sold immediately.)

I'm getting jealous of you guys. I have a peasant VG248QE screen without gsync. I don't know why Nvidia hates Europe so much.

They released two new G-SYNC monitors (AOC and Asus) earlier in the month in the UK - did they not reach any other European countries?
