The most important aspect of Smash is its diverse array of characters from some of the most popular game series ever. Some of these series have been played by multiple generations.

You won't find the ability to create such a diverse roster from any other IP.

Whatever. Just give me the gameplay.

Don't get me wrong. Smash Bros's roster is a great strength, but its greatest strength is its gameplay. Unfortunately, competitors all want to do coin battles, or whatever PSABR was. Smash Bros is generally better made, too. I want to buy Smash Bros and Smash-like games of similar quality in the same way that I buy Street Fighter and Street Fighter-like games.
