As a cliff note, this is why (and I realise I have zero evidence to back this up) I feel Sakurai and co accept Snake in the roster to begin with. Solid Snake might not mean much to Ninty-only gamers who don't have a whole lot of exposure outside of that bubble, and may see Metal Gear as a franchise that has no relation to Nintendo (and more to Sony), but as an iconic Japanese gaming franchise Metal Gear is really, really fucking old. Solid Snake is only a year younger than Link and Samus, and older than Kirby, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, and Mega Man. And as said, four years older than Sonic the fucking Hedgehog.

It's a really, really old, iconic, legacy gaming series from Japan. The shift from Metal Gear 2 to Metal Gear Solid was as poignant to the associate franchise as Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 to theirs. It's a series that has managed to maintain (build?) hype and excitement from gamers for twenty seven years. If the idea behind including characters like Sonic, Mega Man, and Pac Man is to throw a homage to old, symbolic gaming franchises that are still relevant today, then this explains why Solid Snake was welcomed. Metal Gear and Snake are older than two of those three, and still going strong twenty seven years later.

Definitely makes his original inclusion seem maybe not so much out of left field like we all thought.

All the more reason why he deserves a spot in smash bros, still.

He's definitely top 5/10 video gaming icons, depending on who you ask. He didn't come into mainstream popularity until metal gear solid, but I grew up with him starting on metal gear NES (didn't know about the pcengine MSX games as a wee little kid).

I miss snake already That's why I'm playing peace walker until smash comes out. Anyone wanna play co op with me on ps3 sometime this weekend?

I was hoping there would be more colors buy the time I wanted a 2DS. Maybe even a Smash version. But whatever, I'll take it. I want to mainly stick with 2DS as my Smash controller, since it's a little easier to replace.

Good post. People underestimate how popular Metal Gear was pre-MGS. It's not like it was just a one-off game from the 80s that got revived one day, both MG 1 and 2 were critically acclaimed and sold very well.

Ahh mewtwo... I remember unlocking him as if it was yesterday, it was several months after I had gotten the game. My bro and I were just casually playing like we always do, I beat my bro with pika(like always, it took him several years before he was finally able to beat my pika skillz yo) and then there it was. New challenger approaching! We were both like "Wtf, theres another character?" And there he was, mewtwo, now you gotta understand im a huge pokemon fan, but when I was younger it was even worse, even though I thought the anime was shit I didnt care, I still watched it, I ate, breathed, and dreamed pokemon, and mewtwo was(and still is) 1 of my all time favorites, I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw him, neither could my bro, as no one in either of our schools had mewtwo (we knew this cause no one never mentioned him). Now we all know mewtwo was garbage in melee with that crappy ass side b and down b, but I didnt care, he was still my 2nd main. For a while I was the cool kid among my friends, I had people wanting to come over and see for themselves if mewtwo was actually a character. Good times... Mewtwo for smash 4!!

Yeah, it's not that far if you just blow through the story missions. I've been taking my time, replaying old missions, recruiting people/vehicles for mother base, etc. The mother base-building stuff is so fun, makes me WAY more excited for MGS5.

PotD: I didn't think it was fair to give only the fighters alternative costume so I've given Smash mainstay, the sandbag, its own special outfit. This outfit it based off of Billy Bob Johnson, a former employee of Nintendo of America. You may not not him by that name, but you'll certainly know him as the person who ruined my day by leaking Smash information.

It's not really about the "moral outrage" in these kind of campaigns more about media presence (low priced advertising method). And bad publicity still does the trick for a lot of companies
edit: That said I could see it happening if Smash sells enough copies and Duck Hunt gets lots of positive feedback on the internet. There would be no point to do it if people don't like the character.

Yeah, if I were a betting man I'd wager money Sakurai had to drop Snake due to other circumstances. Sakurai is all about gameplay variety and clever design, and Snake offered both in spades.

That's one of the many young Link and we already have one in the game. Link is meant to represent the character in a broader sense. Sure he takes the appearance of a specific Link but move wise he pretty much covers the whole series.

I mean why not give Young Link a raft or step ladder from LoZ, the power medalions from aLttP, or the rod and hard from the Oracle games? All those are young Links too.
