Man, wish I would have gotten a video but I let my mom (65) and her husband try it yesterday while they were visiting from out of town. Was pretty hilarious.
Titans of Space:
"OH MY STARS!"
"I am an astronaut!"
"That has to be Jupiter, if it's not revoke my smarts card ... it is!"
"Whoa, that almost hit me!"
And various other things. She was impressed that it could be like that. Husband was the same but more interested in the tech than what was going on (retired project engineer for a huge mining operation ... so understandable).
I let her try Ocean Rift but she couldn't really get the whole 'controller' thing so I just led her to a place and she stared at the fish swimming by and then "what's that shadow?" and I said "look up" which was quickly followed by a yelp and a "Shark!".
We all laughed.
I didn't do any rollercoasters or anything since she doesn't like those anyway and I'd rather have her first experience be a good one, lol. All in all, was pretty awesome to see their take on it. My mom isn't tech savvy and still thinks "videogames are a waste of time" but she understands, and after my speech about VR she understood more and was seriously impressed not only with the experience but the price of the headset which I then explained is kind of "the tip of the iceberg" to fully get it running.
I can't wait to have a BBQ or something to really show it off to all my other friends, haven't really had a chance since receiving it due to other responsibilities.
I thought DK2's much-ballyhooed positional tracking kind of sucked. Theeeen I was embarrassed to notice I hadn't even properly hooked up the camera, only connecting one of its cables rather than both. The software just doesn't have any problem with working in a more limited way without it. Now that I do have it set up it's pretty impressive in the right games, though I find it pretty easy to get out of range--at which point it DOES start to complain and show a big message.
In the past few days, we've been on the front page of Eurogamer, Polygon, The Verge, and Kotaku. That's pretty exciting exposure, this is probably the most people have paid attention to our mod since the initial release. Dunno how many people have actually tried the mod, but we've been glancing at the comment sections on this site (normally I keep myself from doing that) and it's been pretty exciting. As all 3 of us have talked many times about our hopes where this mod would go - our big goal was to maybe get it on steam to sell so we could make some cash - this has all pretty much been a dream come true thus far.
I have a day job completely unrelated to this field and I haven't been able to do any work today, I've just been glued to the screen, watching the convo on our mod while our team discusses things in private. We're trying to decide how to move forward as, suddenly, we have a lot of professional interest in our work.
Easily the most exciting time of my professional career thus far.

DARK will get an update to work with DK2 soon. I didn't even know the game had oculus rift support. Its not listed as steamvr compatible in steam.
I'm familiar with Adoral84 and WormSlayer on the Oculus subreddit. I didn't know there was a third guy... I assume you're the third guy here.
Anyway, congrats! Big decisions ahead!
I was offered a job at Blizzard in my Quake 3 modding days. One of our level designers left the team to go work on WoW and I'm pretty sure he's still there. I declined because it was too far away and I made more money here but I sometimes wish I had the balls!
Most of the time I'm happy I didn't, though. :lol
Good luck and keep us updated!
Yo you guys need to convince/tell Valve to make their steam controller dual motion now. After that demo I won't accept a non dual motion controller for vr.Dr Kreylos has also been working with us on HL2VR, but he's not really a part of the team. But yeah, the team is us 3 guys, we all have the HL2VR flair on the oculus subreddit. We've been in close communication with Sixense and virtuix and a bunch of other companies trying to get their tech integrated into our mod.
I will definitely move for a job at valve, no questions asked. I'm pretty sure my other teammates would as well. This is pretty much our dream job.

You also made me regret not buying a hydra a few months back.
Awesome mod btw.
So I'm trying to figure out what to do with my situation as it relates to Elite Dangerous jidders when looking left and right. I spent about 2 days reading up on it as much as possible on Reddit, Neogaf, the official OR forums, etc, and have tried all the crazy solutions offered (unplug motion camera, disable all monitors but 1, disable all monitors period, enable Vsync in the Nvidia profiler, etc) and nothing has worked.
There seems to be really no consensus on whether the issue is caused by Elite running on the older SDK or rather it's purely a matter of frame rate. Right now I'm getting over 75FPS pretty much everywhere but station interiors, but get jidder pretty much everywhere with all settings on Low.
So my question is....should I wait and see how well Elite performs once it supports Time Shift / Direct To Rift / all the .4 bells and whistles, or should I go ahead and upgrade my processor (i5-3570K) and video card (760 Ti) to the best possible model? I'm hoping the answer is to wait for Elite to get an update on their OR stuff, because if I'm going to buy a new video card, I want to at least wait until the Nvidia 8X series is out in the next month or so. But seeing people with badass video cards still report jiddering in the station makes me hopefully that I'm not totally screwed with my 760ti.
So far, all demos have ran fine with no jiddering except the UE4 Hanggliding one (which apparently it's optimized well), Elite, and DCS. Even the Table Knights demo, also UE4, is pretty much jidder free.
Yep, I've got Win 8.1, so I think I did the equivalent of disabling Aero, which is changing Visual Effects to "Best Performance" in Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance....unless there's another place I need to go.
So you don't get vertical tearing when looking left and right in the station on your 770?
Guys, what's currently the best racing game with DK2 compatibility?
/edit: And I should mention, one that is available to download now? ie. I think Project CARS has compatibility but you need to be an early backer?
I've been playing the HL2VR mod for a few hours and its really, really impressive. Valve and other devs should really pay attention to the cleverly integrated hud, and even the Hydra seems more precise than it usually is. Top notch work on the remodeled guns too, it is a joy to wield them around while shooting literally left and right.
And that revolver reload? So good.
I thought the crytek news was going to be the best thing that happened to me this year.
Nope.
Valve just hit us up. They want us to fly out to Seattle to talk to their VR team. Holy shit.

Live for Speed.
ordered June 8th and its finally shipping!
thought I wouldn't get it till Oct![]()
This hypes me greatly. June order here too.
Dreadhalls is out for DK2. I played for a little bit, but had to NOPE out of it until later.
Also got my girlfriend to play Don't Let Go. I really wish I had recorded it... She's pretty uninterested in VR and gets motion sick easily, but she lost twice at Don't Let Go because she really got sucked in. The first time she actually tried to swat at the bees, and the second time the spider at the end startled her too much. I was trying hard not to laugh my ass off, because she kept spinning in circles for some reason in my computer chair... I had to grab the OR and headphone wires and try to keep them from getting tangled. It looked ridiculous.
Indeed.
Right now you can get the free demo version from http://www.lfs.net. DK2 support should be integrated into the "official" version any day now but for now you'll need to install this patch.
I also highly recommend getting at least the S1 license which will give you access to a few more tracks and cars. The MRT5 is a little formula type car that doesn't look like much but the feeling of driving it in VR is unparalleled. It feels like driving a kart and the sense of speed is the best you've ever experienced from a game. There's not much to collide with so you can also use the positional tracking to lean with the car in the turns and it feels amazing.
This was an epiphany for me. I then decided to throw stupid amounts of money to enhance my sim racing experience.![]()

Oh so LFS has a demo that supports dk2?
I was doing the exact same thing in the MRT5 last night. So cool.
Yup!
Damn I can't seem to make anything work, only tuscany and ocean rift so far.
I installed LFS, patched it and it's all right version shows as 06F8 and I edited card_cfg.txt to have Adapter Select 1 so it lanches on the rift. Fine it lanches on the rift but I only see half screen on each eye. Is there anything else I should config?
Dunno why but Qbeh-1 really makes me feel sick after just 20mins or so... tried it with slower walking speed, gamepad, KBM... so sad, I liked what I played from the game in 2D and was stopping myself from continuing it because I wanted to play in in VR![]()
Headbob is activated by default. You've turned that off right?
Just like any first person game with locomotion and "artificial" body rotation it's not going to be the best VR experience though.
If only we could spin around freely without the fucking cord it would make things exponentially easier.
Did you activate the Oculus Rift view in the in-game settings? I think they even had a dedicated guide to set it up for DK2.
No I couldn't find anything Rift related on the in-game settings, where is it?
I could do with that guide to if you know where I can find it
Cheers
- Start LFS and click 3D on the View Options Screen
- Select Oculus Rift and click OK
- You should be given the option to exit, ready to restart in Rift mode
I think it has been posted a few pages back: https://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=86202
Yeah, I did turn it off just like always sprint. Jumping feels weird and the locked X-rotation axis doesn't help![]()
