There was a lot of menu PotD this week. I wonder if the leak made Sakurai so bummed that his wife, Mrs. Sakurai had to take over. I mean she a menu designer and there was a lot of menu PotD this week for some reason. How much of a stretch you guys think that is?

Don't count on me, count on Nintendo! I can't report any news if there's no news to report. :P

If you sign an NDA when you walk in, report that at least. Because then we at least know something is up.

I totally promise not to bother you about it, I just want to know that info is to be expected.
I can't make the same promise for the rest of SmashGAF though.

Veeery interesting. I respect that he actually tried to gear this towards both competitive and casual gaming. I do still disagree with another Melee-type Smash Bros will deter new players from wanting to play.

I really wonder what was going on in Sakurai's developmental process when creating Melee. I heard that he really pushed himself and HAL to get that game out.

Also we're not casualcore or esports now, we Opponent-Based Action Game™ now!

I have never been more disappointed in a game than I was the first time I played Melee. I know it's not a popular opinion, but Melee was such a huge downgrade from 64. I wasn't as disappointed in Brawl because I just want expecting as much. So yes, there are definitely people who don't want Melee or anything like it back. I believe Sakurai can do better.

A ridiculous, sort of dumb stretch.

The PotDs have probably been planned for weeks and it's light on content because the 3DS game is coming out soon and the line between interesting, new content and stuff they want to hold back for the game's release is increasingly thin.

I'm curious, how was it a downgrade? I feel it expanded on everything in Smash 64 and more.

I'm warming up to the menus a bit more. The more saturated colors make everything stand out more from the white background than they did in Brawl.

Oh God there's not gonna be a music update is there

Nah.

There's just so much that Sakurai can reveal now that the game is coming out pretty soon. While this week's PotD may not be the most interesting of all the pics, at least they are pics with new or more detailed explanation.

Really curious on that thought process.

Guys remember, when the video for Robin was going to be released Sakurai posted a Rayman picture that had nothing to do with it, and today he posts a Wii U picture after days and days of 3DS related stuff because of japanese launch. I'm calling we'll see something in the direct or they don't know how to handle hype anymore at nintendo.

It added new characters and new features, and those were great, but I never felt like I was actually in control of my character. Advanced techniques like SHFFLing and wavedashing helped with that, but as my joints got worse with age I lost the ability to do them consistently. In 64 (and even in Brawl) I never have that issue. My character always ends up exactly where I put them.

If you're a Kirby fan, Melee was kinda like a kick in the balls.

That, too. :)

Sakurai seems to really believe that any move made to address the concerns of tournament players will immediately result in some design that sends casual players running. Which...just isn't true. It isn't even true of more traditional fighters like Tekken or Street Fighter. There are people who have fun with those games who will never do an EGWF or FADC, just like there were tons of people who loved Melee and couldn't care less about wavedashing.

The guy's stance on this issue is just baffling.

I don't get it either. I've put everyone from kids to adults with wildly differing game experience in front of Melee, and they've all had a blast. They've never thought of the game as being too difficult or fast. All it takes is some level 1s and me picking my worst character and it's a party. And Mario beating up Pikachu is already interesting enough for the most casual of casuals, so I don't see how he thinks he's alienating anyone.

I wish I didn't disagree with Sakurai so much on competitive gameplay. I thought he struck an amazing balance between competitive play and casual play with Melee. The fact that he regrets Melee's gameplay is pretty heartbreaking.

I first played Melee when I was 13 and absolutely loved the gameplay. I didn't play competitively and still enjoyed myself. As I grew older, that game had so much depth along with the accessibility that I was able to hone my abilities and take it to tournament level. The game had both fun gameplay to newcomers and depth for the more hardcore.

Making the game slower for new players and ripping out a lot of the mechanics that made the game a great fighter really hurt Brawl. I still enjoyed the game but I put it down pretty quickly.

I think Sakurai really underestimates how accessible Melee was. It didn't need to be slower. Sakurai already had solid core gameplay with Melee. It's one of my favorite games ever, casually and competitively, and seeing him regret the nature of the game is just so frustrating.

I'm still looking forward to SSB4, but shit. I disagree with him so much.

Interesting. I've never had issues with the game feeling "loose" or anything. Although even with constant training and forcing muscle memory the fundamentals can cause a repetitive strain to some, so fair enough.

Also to Kirby....yikes, I kinda forgot how hard he got slapped with the nerf stick.

Also also 10 PotDs? Time to Crank the Heat Up!

As a Melee player, hearing that Melee's gameplay was "unfortunate" to its creator is a lot like if Tezuka and Miyamoto regretted Super Mario Bros. 3 and A Link to the Past, or if Sakamoto thought that Super Metroid was a disappointment (which I could see, since it lacked that ever-important PTSD scene).

Doesn't he usually mention in the PotD that there is a direct when the direct has Smash news? I'm doubtful guys.
Pretty sure he only mentioned the Smash Direct and the Robin trailer, which were both fully Smash related.

Other times he just posted Captain Olimar.

It's unfortunate that he doesn't really see Melee as good of a gateway as it really was. Sure top level play is hard to get to, but Melee was a really good game at nurturing players into how they are now. A lot of people weren't competitive when they started and now some of them are amazing players.

I'm glad I'm wrong, hopefully we get something then. Though I still won't be staying up till 4am for it. Looking forward to waking up to some good news.

C'mon Sakurai, I need my jamz

Don't make me wait foreverrrrr

I imagine Sakurai has a lot of goals as a designer.

Part of that is selling 12 million copies of each Smash game and finding the best balance he can between accessibility and high skill ceilings is something that weighs heavily, but at the end of the day, those 12 million need to come in.

I've had joint issues with my hands since college, so there are just some maneuvers I can't do at all anymore.

That being said, my problem with Melee wasn't the speed, the game has just always felt slippery to me. Something that strikes a balance between Melee and Brawl, but feels more solid is exactly what I'm hoping for.

Pretty boring week, and the fact the direct in Japan only probably means no Smash stuff there either.

I was hoping Mashy would give us something to rev everyone up.

I'm willing to wager that the size of the Wii's audience did more to get 12 million to buy Brawl than the design choices. Let's not forget that Melee had a 3:1 attach ratio, while Brawl didn't even come close to that level of attach ratio.

Have we ever gotten a character announcement trailer that was only 3ds visuals? If we haven't my expectations for smash related news on the direct have gone down significantly

Well in that case he's fucked and should make whatever game he wants and it doesn't appear to be Melee.

is this really all the new fighters? Thats pathetic. I dont even recognize most of these characters and Im pretty well-versed in Nintendo history...
There's debate on if the leaked roster is it, as there's reasoning to go either way. Still, I don't see anything wrong with the known roster.
