Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

The fact that they're so mind numbingly boring, bland and out of place is why I hate them so much, and they wasted resources making 3 separate characters out of that shit.

It's not all that much more resource-intensive than making 3 unique alloys, and as they're playable characters rather than exclusively enemies, the game as a whole will benefit.

I don't get how you can complain about Miis being boring. They're whatever you want, which is pretty awesome. Use your imagination; you could even use Mii Fighters for role playing if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Maybe I'm alone in thinking just how much complete shit the Mii's look like, they're just so bad, I hate their design and their inclusion.

The fact that they're not actually a Nintendo character and that you're just supposed to make your own whatever is so annoying to me.

I was talking about mii's as a playable character when I mentioned that last bit.

I haven't done anything.

What? Why? D:
might be infected with a new dangerous bug virus, wont get results till saturday. They gave me some shots and I honestly feel better already (except for my poor butt that got the shots..
..ouch) My immune system might also be low.

also thanks for telling me the direct time, random

1. Design better looking Miis.
2. AHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

SSB4's roster is sort of polarising - it's possibly the best lineup of newcomers in the series, though it's counterbalanced by having the worst array of cuts in the series.
I think it's far from the best lineup of newcomers.

Melee
Bowser
Dr. Mario
Falco
Ganondorf
Ice Climbers
Marth
Mewtwo
Mr. Game & Watch
Peach
Pichu
Roy
Sheik
Young Link
Zelda

Brawl
Diddy Kong
Ike
King Dedede
Lucario
Lucas
Meta Knight
Pikmin & Olimar
Pit
Pokémon Trainer
Squirtle
Ivysaur
Charizard
R.O.B.
Solid Snake
Sonic the Hedgehog

Toon Link
Wario
Wolf
Zero Suit Samus

Smash 4
Bowser Jr.
Dark Pit
Dr. Mario
Duck Hunt Dog
Greninja
Lucina
Little Mac
Mega Man
Mii Fighters
Pac-Man
Palutena
Shulk
Robin
Rosalina & Luma
Villager
Wii Fit Trainer

I've made bold the BIG names from each game. I'm sure you'll probably disagree with me on that, but I mean...who in that lineup appeals to the casual Nintendo fan? Robin, Lucina, Palutena, Dark Pit, Shulk and Greninja are all from games released in the last few years. Duck Hunt Dog and Little Mac are fairly niche characters as well. I seem to be in the minority in not being able to see the appeal of Wii Fit Trainer, and I'm not a big fan of Rosalina either. Mega Man is the only real big-hitter, and even then I doubt kids even know who he is these days.

Compare that to the likes of Bowser, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Peach, Zelda, Diddy Kong, Lucario, Solid Snake...SONIC THE HEDGEHOG?! Nah, Smash 4 might have the most newcomers (and if you count Pokemon Trainer as three separate characters it doesn't even have that), but it's far from the best. AND then you have to take into consideration the cuts.

In the official Nintendo canon, the Miis we see are genetically modified clones of the original featureless Mii. Cheap, versatile, and mindlessly obedient, they serve as Nintendo's go-to for menial labor and expendable troops. The richest of the Nintendo elite breed physically augmented Miis for the gladiatorial arenas. Then the gambling spectators cheer their emotionless killers on, eager for blood.

Mii, like them or not, are a major part of Nintendo History. And at it's core that is what Smash is all about.

If they weren't playable, using them as the new fighting team was always a no brainer.

I think that's precisely why I like it, though. As a hardcore Nintendo fan, it's much more interesting to me when they have to start digging deeper for characters and make them have to get more creative with the move sets.

And I'll say I think you're underselling both Little Mac and Duck Hunt Dog. If you refer to Little Mac as "the guy from Punch-Out" I find almost anyone with a sense of gaming knows who he is. As for Duck Hunt Dog, when I told my girlfriend (who has played maybe a total of 5 hours of video games in her life) she wouldn't know any of the characters that were leaked and she made me tell her anyway, as soon as I asked her "Have you every played Duck Hunt?", she immediately responded with "Oh, the dog!"

Both characters may not be known by name, but they are definitely pretty iconic.

I don't see why Greninja doesn't apply. In fact, it probably appeals to the casual Nintendo fan the best of any character added, aside from Mega Man, Pac-Man, or Villager.
Pokemon X&Y has sold ~12 million copies, but I mean...how of many of them are going to be Smash? How many of them actually like Greninja? Compare Greninja's level of popularity to Charizard or Mewtwo or even Lucario.

As for the others...Mega Man is the biggest but I doubt he compares to the hype from Sonic or maybe even Snake being revealed for Brawl. Villager...I guess so, but how many Animal Crossing players even play Smash? I don't know if I'd call him one of the big names next to the likes of someone like Mewtwo, but I could be wrong there. Pac-Man...hell even in SmashGAF the fanbase seemed to be divided on whether or not they wanted him in the game. He's a nice piece of gaming history I suppose, but hasn't really been relevant for decades.

I'm not saying this lineup of newcomers is bad, I just don't think it's as good as Brawl's.

I wasn't going by the characters' identities, only what they brought to the table in terms of new gameplay concepts. A vast amount of Melee's newcomers were clones, and Brawl introduced characters such as Wolf and Lucas which, while not clones at all, weren't particularly unique. However, every new character in SSB4 that isn't a clone has notable mechanical differences from the rest of the roster.

Rosalina is a way better pick than Falco.

This too, I think categorizing Falco as something casual Smashers would grasp is reaching. I'd say this is a more appropriate assessment:

Mario
Luigi
Donkey Kong
Yoshi
Samus
Kirby
Link
Jigglypuff
Pikachu

Fox
Captain Falcon
Ness

Peach
Bowser
Dr. Mario
Mewtwo
Pichu
Zelda
Ganondorf
Young Link

Sheik
Falco
Marth
Roy
Ice Climbers
Mr. Game & Watch

Diddy Kong
Wario
Squirtle
Ivysaur
Charizard
Toon Link
King Dedede
Meta Knight
Sonic
Snake

Zero Suit Samus
Ike
Lucas
Wolf
Pit
Olimar
R.O.B.

Rosalina & Luma
Bowser Jr.
Greninja
Villager
Wii Fit Trainer
Mii Fighters
Mega Man
Pac-Man
Duck Hunt
Little Mac

Robin
Lucina
Palutena
Dark Pit
Shulk

But I might be biased

That's unfair metric, cause the more Smash games are made, the less iconic/big characters are left for the new iteration.

I'd say Smash 4 has the best roster in terms of how unique most of the newcomers seem to be, in terms of moveset and concept. Melee had Mr. Game & Watch, Ice Climbers and Zelda/Sheik as the most unique newcomers in my opinion. Brawl had Olimar, and Pokemon Trainer.

Almost every newcomer in Smash 4 so far has some sort of unique attribute/gimmick or concept that makes them really unique, except for Greninja and Wii Fit Trainer, and Lucina (cause clone)

Maybe a bit off-topic, but due to the free €5 from Nintendo Premium and some left-over money, I can buy a VC game. It's going to be either Super Metroid or Yoshi's Island. I haven't played either of them. I have Yoshi as an ambassador game, but it plays terribly on the 3ds with it's extreme blurriness and ghosting. Anyway, help me choose :(

Guys stop doing this to yourselves.

They are not unveiling a new fighter because it's always done wifh Wii U footage and it's Japan only. When has a reveal ever been Japan only?

It's likely just for news about modes and stages before it releases.

I hope I'm wrong, but whatever.

I hope we see something interesting at least, it doesn't have to be a new fighter.

Man, you really can't lose; both are in my top 10 of all time. I'd say Super Metroid lends itself more to fewer, longer sessions, while Yoshi's Island could be taken a little slower. That's just me, though, they're both fucking amazing.

I think Super Metroid is far better, but that's just me.

Get EarthBound instead.

The most likely thing to happen is Japan 3DS bundle, I wonder if we're going to see a redesign.

Super Metroid. I do not hesitate to put Super Metroid in the top five games I have ever played.

Ahh, there we go, must have missed that. Cheers.

So we're expecting Smash stuff in this one, right?

Well only reason to expect anything related at all is cause Sakurai retweeted it. However since it is a Japanese-only 3DS direct, it will most likely talk about the 3DS Bundle, or so.

honestly how do you expect them to one up the brawl line-up after getting almost all the most wanteds after metanight, sonic, diddy kong and olimar?

Hmmm, read that Super Metroid is the 50hz version optimized for 60hz (in EU) but that she still feels a bit sluggish. I think I'm going with Yoshi then.

Going full-on retro would have been more amazing than Brawl's roster for me.

Excitebiker, Duck Hunt Dog, Mike Jones, Little Mac, Megaman, Pacman, Simon Belmont, Sukapon, Mach Rider, Takamaru, Ayumi Tachibana, Prince Sable, Ryu Hyabusa, Donbe & Hikari, NES Sport rep, Tamagon...

Making characters that will never have a chance of being in their own game again or that people have never even heard of a playable fighter in smash has always been infinitely more interesting to me than a character I played as last week.

Well, I´m glad that you´re not the one making the decisions for that game then.

Because that´s the great thing about Smash: There´s something for almost anyone in there. You´ve got human designs like Zelda, Samus, Marth or Little Mac, you´ve got cutesy characters like Kirby or Villager, really wacky stuff like Bowser Jr...

And guess what? I don´t give a single shit about any of the Pokemon in Smash. They all just look like annoying, deformed stuffed animals to me because I never had any emotional connection to the Pokemon universe. Likewise with Ice Climbers - I just don´t care at all about them. But I can still understand that these are important to A LOT of people.

Miis CAN be really dumb and ugly if people make them that way. And in certain games they barely have bodies at all (like in most of Wii Sports, just heads on floating cones), whereas in other games like Mario Golf or Smash they have proper bodies and neat little details.

I personally have always loved character creation in games, it´s incredibly important to me in games like Monster Hunter, where I sometimes stick to a particular armor just because I enjoy the way it looks on my character. I really think my Mii in Mario Golf 3DS looks adorable:

sdkvrUT.png

(the only thing I think is missing from Miis are ears, they just look a bit odd without them.)

You can hate them all you want, to me it´s one of the best things about this new iteration. People are sometimes to uptight when it comes to changes in Smash in particular. The old games are still available and still play great if you prefer them.
