Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

This, but with a white 3DS.
Here's the page for everyone to browse for themselves: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/new/kisekae/index.html

The funnies part is that the new Smart Watches have a higher resolution than the 3DS. Let me repeat that: Watches have a higher resolution than the 3DS. The resolution of the 3DS is honestly my biggest gripe with the system, far more than the 2nd analog ever was.

I think every display on the market for the past 5 years have at least double the PPI of the 3DS. I know it's Nintendo and it's for a younger market, but I'm pretty sure even elementary school kids are used to high PPI displays.

Will get one day 1. I play my 3DS XL so much, it isn't even funny. I've exhausted much of the 3DS library, and have begun picking up DS games to play the gems I missed.

The new controls are pretty exciting. Obviously they're meant to eliminate the need for CPP, and perhaps we will see more devs support CPP (by which I mean these new control schemes). Given that games that support CPP currently can be played with or without it, there's no reason to not continue that trend.

I'm also loving the face plates and stuff, although I'll probably just buy the blue one and call it a day.

Seriously people
Seriously what? "Seriously, here's one of the fastest-discontinued revisions to a major consumer electronics product ever made"? This was on the market for 2/3 of a year and then replaced wholesale by the iPad 4/"iPad with Retina Display."

They sold well, sure, but they sold well because they were iPads, not because the branding was clever or concise. Employees, when tasked with actually selling them to a customer that didn't just blurt out "Give me the newest iPad!", got blank stares when explaining to customers that they had the choice between iPad 2 or New iPad, and soon abandoned Apple's urged moniker for the much clearer-cut "iPad 3." The huge cottage market for iPad peripherals that wants specific numbers/prefixes to denote their compatability did the same; A bunch of covers that advertise they work with the New iPad might work okay when the New iPad is the New iPad, but when the "New iPad" is going to be an old iPad in the near future, it's exceptionally confusing. There's still peripherals hanging on shelves that say "New iPad," which at this point is three revisions back and was discontinued two years ago. Explain that branding to your customer.

Looks great. I don't have any 3DS yet, so maybe I'll get the New XL one when it comes to the US.

A new F-Zero for 3DS would cinch the deal for me.

Yeah, the new Ipad was a terrible branding decision that was quickly replaced and will never be done again at Apple. I have to hope that Nintendo has a better name for the west.

I honestly only expect 15 exclusive retail games by the end of its life and a ton of 3ds games with enhanced features since devs will still sell to the larger market share.

On the other hand, with iOS there's no confusion about compatible software.
*Looks over at the Bioshock 1 iOS port thread...

Because of that, only devices sporting Apple's A6 or A7 chips can run the game. This means that every Apple A5 (and A5X in the third generation iPad) device is unsupported which is quite a long list of devices. First generation iPad Mini owners may be especially disappointed since their device is still sold and isn't even two years old, but given that it launched with the same hardware platform as the iPad 2 from 2011 it was to be expected that it wouldn't have a record setting length of time for software support.

Are you sure?

People can still use their circle pad pro and the extra shoulders could be put in the touch screen too. I predict games playable on both consoles with new 3ds being the better platform to play. I don't really see fragmentation as a problem.

The circle pad pro has two extra shoulder buttons

Unless it's a n3DS exclusive, like Xenoblade, it will be playable on the 3DS

And I'm pretty sure they aren't making Xenoblade for elementary school kids.

Close enough. My point though is that the low quality screens seem to be acceptable to Nintendo, and I'm not sure if there's an explanation other than the standards of a younger market, but they are already used to better displays even at that age.

I'm expecting far less than that. 5-10 retail games tops, all made by Nintendo, more ports than new software.

This is something I've been thinking about for a while, but did Sharp even invest in any more glassless 3D screens after 2010-2011? Because I've never heard of higher resolution glasses free screens this size even existing. This is why I've thought that there is no way 3D is in the next handheld.

Yes there were 720p 3D screens on android phones. If Nintendo is keeping the 3D aspect I hope the 3DHDS will have one

I really want the New 3DS Smash Bros design. That plus the coloured buttons will be bliss.
Especially without the god awful Smash title sat there in the corner.

EDIT: The Smash one is an LL it seems. I can handle that. I can only hope replacement buttons become available so I can swap the XL ones out.
Wouldn't need customisation with that Smash cover!

I guess this is why there have been a dearth of 3DS game announcements lately.

I wonder if some kind of Wii U functionality is in the cards here given Amiibo's inclusion and the new chipset.

I have a friend who insists that the 3D angle is being improved via head-tracking. Seems unlikely to me.

I'm weirded out by the cartridge slot moving.

Does the increased power mean virtual console games from non 8 bit systems could happen on 3DS now? I'm not gonna lie. I don't like the 3DS at all and haven't touched mine in absolutely ages, but a 3DS that had SNES and N64 games on it is something I'd upgrade to and actually play.

Actually fairly excited for this. I have an OG 3ds but was waiting for them to come out with a revision to add a 2nd stick/circle pad. Having that, along with zr/zl buttons, ambient light sensor (though hopefully they have the option of turning that off/on), and better 3d viewing angles has me very intrigued. The only thing i don't like is that it requires a microsd card, meaning i can't use my current SD card (unless im mistakened).

Why.

Just release the successor instead of making minor improvements to the system. I don't see the point, they've already revised the hardware.

I'm more salty over the fact that I might be spending say $200 for the NEW 3ds XL in 2015 that still has a fucking PICA 2000 GPU. That's the part that really fucking rubs me the wrong way.

colored buttons make good looking retro aspect but they really don't look good...

i'm dying to get this anyway, i was so close on getting a 3ds xl good thing didn't happen

I just hope that with the improved CPU, we can get GBA VC on a damn handheld.

I'm hoping that's part of the reason they did it, to a) improve the performance of the ambassador gba titles, and b) to allow the possibility of adding snes/gba games to the 3ds VC.

I have doubts we'll see N64 VC titles on it unfortunately

If it were simply a redesign without a CPU boost that would be beautiful. But in securing exclusive new games, it truly is unfair to anyone with a current 3DS system. Had they done something along the lines of the N64 Expansion Pack, which was a very inexpensive upgrade, this would be much less of an issue. Instead, they are forcing consumers to buy all new (same, but upgraded) hardware in order to play upcoming big games (rest assured, there will be plenty more down the line).

I always thought that I'd get a 3DS one day, but I simply cannot support this type of business philosophy. Not to mention the "New 3DS" name, which is even more confusing than Wii U was. To me, this console announcement is very bad news.

The "New 3DS" name is pretty stupid. It'll probably be a Wii U naming fiasco all over again.

I'm not sure why. The Japanese market has always flocked to new portable console revisions out of Nintendo, and there's no indication that they will keep the original system on the market.

Yeah maybe we could actually emulate GBA titles on a system that's portable now. The novelty.

If they were going so far as to include new hardware they should have a least improved the resolution (by an even number for perfect scaling).
You mean like DS>3DS was a whole number :( Good it was so little a leap that turning off the shitty scaling didn't make things too small.

Don't do this to yourself. A Japanese FAQ written for Japanese people will never have a region locking question because it is a non-issue for Japan. Likewise the list of non-working games also doesn't include Guitar Hero on Tour 80s (never released in Japan) despite the fact it won't work for the same reason as Guitar Hero on Tour.

The way you can look at it is the answered the question by saying it can play almost all software 3DS can (Japanese software); not all software 3DS can't (EU & US software).

I'm down for an upgrade, I play my 3DS so much as it is I'm very happy to have a new version of it with improvements.

Only sucky thing is the wait and I don't like how the smaller one (that I have no interest in) gets exclusive shit like the faceplates.

Second stick is pretty big news. Glad I haven't upgraded from my launch 3DS yet. That new XL is calling my name.

Now I might actually play Monster Hunter.
