It doesn't need to be "saved," but I'd choose Lucas, Mewtwo, Ice Climbers, Snake, and Chorus Men.
The stage roster, however, is in dire need of saving if you ask me.

Different strokes, but I find the roster thoroughly mediocre in terms of roster additions. Hell, between Melee and Brawl rosters, I've lost 2 characters I like to play and only gained 1.
Making stuff up is fun.

I don't think we have the full roster at all.
I would love Demise, but I never cared for Snake. Cuts are always a shame, but I'm most indifferent to his exclusion.

Would've added Toad and Inkling, but I think the latter should be saved for a future Smash game and the former might seem like too much for the Mario franchise even with Captain Toad coming out.

I think people are just so exhausted by it. He's the most contested hopeful and has been for like fourteen years. We're burned out on Ridley. We want somebody else to talk about.

Edit: I won't be TOO disappointed no matter what because Mega Man is in the game and he's probably who I'll play 99% of the time. Still, it would really suck to lose Ice Climbers, I loved to play as Snake in Brawl, and I've wanted Ridley since Melee.

I know I might have said I have a high threshold for disappointment, but I'm just a little sad knowing that Chorus Kids didn't make it in. I mean, from 2008-2014, RH has sold 4 million copies with only two games! F-Zero and EarthBound didn't even HAVE games in that period. It's a real shame that Sakurai didn't think to prioritize RH in any way other than a weirdly out-of-place enemy (which honestly is the only sliver of hope I have for a Rhythm Heaven character being DLC or time-locked, let alone included in the roster at this point).

My standards have been the same from beginning to end. That those standards may not be meant is cause for disappointment.
Though I will still thoroughly love and enjoy the game if the goddamn netcode is good.

So do you just not play characters you aren't familiar with rather than give them a chance? Because IMO one of the best parts of smash is learning about franchises from Nintendo you were unaware. It'd be boring if all the characters were super popular additions everyone knew about from the already well known franchises

We got Goku to talk about, Batman, Naruto, Not Miku, Dark Link, Shadow Mario, Toadsworth, and my favourite Fuky Kong.
I felt like people using All-Star mode as proof that there were more characters was a vain hope, I remember reading similar reactions when Brawl released.
I think it would be insane to say that the roster didn't drastically improve from Brawl given the sheer amount and variety in newcomers... but damn if we didn't lose some good characters along the way.

I pick characters primarily on aesthetic value, and I know what my tastes are.
He would be cool but not really the big deal that he is to a lot of other people for me. I think the constant speculation since Melee has given him a status among fans that he probably wouldn't have otherwise.

Ridley really isn't iconic at all beyond the niche of gaming enthusiasts in the west. I feel like we exist in this bubble so we don't realize that metroid is a B series in the west and far worse in Japan

That sounds good to me. I'd maybe take a newcomer over Ice Climbers, but they should be cutting unique movesets and characters. I want Snake to sneak his way back into Smash the hardest. I know he's the only one that looks removed, but I want them to set a precedent that third-party Smashers are in fo' life, dawg.
