Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

I think some people are assuming that saying more than 40 means 'more than 40 but less than 50', but that may or may not be true.

Also, sorry pikma, I have no idea how to beat that guy :( :( :(
Oh it's all my fault, my R2 trigger was stuck for some weird reason and I couldn't swap equipment, I was stuck with the sniper rifle -_-

I fixed it afterwards but you had already left :(

That further proves my point that Dixie is in less games by comparison in her franchise compared to Ridley in his. Saying Ridley shouldn't be in Smash is like saying Ganondorf shouldn't be in Smash he shouldn't if he's just going to keep being a Falcon clone. I'm not saying Dixie shouldn't, but to say she's more iconic is silly as she's been in way less game then Ridley (5 vs 7) vs the number of games each is not in (Dixie has not been in over a dozen DK games, Ridley has only missed 3 Metroid games) it's clear who the bigger character is.

Yeah we definitely who's bigger
lol

I honestly don't think the number of games here is the main issue. Dixie was a playable protagonist in 3 games of a series more popular than Metroid, one of which was released recently. Measuring who's more iconic than the other is just going to go in circles.

Doesn't prove or disprove anything, though. As I said, I'm not taking any side here, but I find the logic you use at best unstable and just wish to discourse on it.

The initial statement you made was referring the number of different people playing a game, thus more iconic.

Now, if DKC sold 9 millions, compared to Metroid Series 18 millions. Let's say for the sake of argument that every individual that bought DKC also bought DKC2, and DKC3 (which they didn't, from my brief Google surmise. They still sold really solid but nowhere near DKC).

It would still only be 9 millions different people "knowing" (if they remember him at all) who K.Rool is.

Now, if we say that somehow - due to a genre shift with Metroid Prime, let's say - the same situation doesn't apply to Metroid, people who were never interested in Metroid as a 2D sidescroller got to try it out. They "know" Ridley (if they even remember him at all). And that the people who bought Super Metroid were disgusted with the genre shift, and ended up never buying another game of the series, etc, etc. But they, too, know Ridley. And the guy who bought a Wii just for the new Team Ninja game based on Metroid, he too knows Ridley.

Well I could go on explaining but I think you can understand where I'm coming from. The scenario I propose is highly unlikely : it's not meant to be likely, either. But you simply cannot judge "Well, since DKC sold more than 9 millions clearly more people will know K.Rool!" because you have no way of knowing who these people are. There's some things that sales data cannot account for.

"if you take the worst case scenario for DKC, and the best case scenario for Metroid, then maybe you could argue more people played Metroid than DKC"

bullshit, and you know it too, you're just constructing an incredibly poor devil's advocate argument

It's surprising that we never got an Ice Climbers revival. Despite the original game's questionable quality, a co-op platformer with both players working together to scale mountains could be awesome, especially with online.
Yes, there should've been a returns stage at the very least.
Especially since a Returns stage would have a history both on handhelds and home consoles.

I really wish I'd gotten the one pre-Shulk announcement, though.

Speaking of which: OMG SHULK
emot-allearshmjel.gif

I hope Ridley gets announced while I'm at the hospital.
Wait, why are you in the hospital D:

That didn't make Joe Chill the main villain.
Unless you're watching Tim Burton's Batman, where they rolled Joe Chill into The Joker.

Thanks for the guys who answered me pages ago!

Is it a reference to something in the game?
Apparently Shulk can say it if you're forced to fight an enemy significantly stronger than you (red-colored name tag). Amusing choice of title, though.

So on the off chance Shulk's trailer was the last one we get before the Japanese launch, what has everyone's favorite newcomer trailer been?

Obviously Little Mac has the best one, but might as well give the others a chance
I'm leaning either Mega Man's (hype!) or Robin's (surprise, not Shulk!).

There should've been a DK Returns stage on 3DS, even if it was a shared stage between the systems. DK is getting shafted pretty hard.

On the topic of DK and Metroid, can we at least agree that only Jungle Japes and Brinstar on the 3DS is criminal?

They both need to be given some better representation. Ironically, Donkey Kong could use a lava stage (the last two stages of Tropical Freeze in particular), and a Metroid jungle stage (Green Brinstar or Torvus Bog) would be a nice change of pace.

I would have loved a Temple or a Factory DK stage on either version.

We'll probably get yet another Jungle on WiiU and that's it. Because Donkey Kong never leaves the jungle in his games.

yeah, gotta go, gonna watch tv w/ girlfriend, then head to bed. I was wondering why you kept dying! :(

We can play tomorrow.

Has there been any word on the special bonuses from Smash 64 and Melee returning? I always like trying to figure what each of the bonuses at the end of each Classic Mode match meant.

Hell yeah, the toy factory level in DK64 as a stage would be epic

The big question is can I pick Japanese God tier voices? With every character that gets announced my cringing intensifies, Shulk was ok but LAWD, Jesus, Joseph and Mary was english Palutena's voice doodoo

And you are just spouting angrily at a gaffer who claimed twice by now that he has no interest in your petty weekend smash argument of iconicity, only in the basis of an argument made by Aaronrules380.

Which of these two things is more worthwhile of our time?

Dixie's biggest notable absence was DK64 since a shit ton of other characters from the Country series popped up there. I'm not really going to hold Jungle Beat against her since the developers of that game made it an effort to wash away nearly every contribution Rare made to the series. As for Returns, it was a revival clearly aimed at cherry-picking popular elements from the first DKC like Diddy, Cranky, animal buddies, minecarts, KONG letters, etc.

So yes she hasn't really been in a mainline Donkey Kong between DKC 3 and Tropical Freeze, but at the same time she has held a good track record as far as spinoffs go like with Konga, Jungle Climber, and Diddy Kong Racing.

Dammit, I tried to set my expectations low and I'm still coming out of this disappointed! There's barely any stages, and I was really getting hyped for Chorus Kids. I know that leaker was a fraud the second he said Impa a second time, but I'm really hoping they pull something off where they add in free DLC that was on disc for the Wii U later...

We don't know all of the wii u stages nor do we know all of the assist trophies yet.
it's far too early to be talking about series getting hosed

People are acting like we know EVERYTHING about the game already.

Chill out guys and stop getting yourselves upset about things that we don't know yet.

Life is too short for that

I feel like there's some story to Dixie's absence from Donkey Kong 64, since Tiny Kong is basically the same character design and even retains the helicopter hair gimmick.

Of course, Donkey Kong 64 sucks anyway.

I mean we've all already established how popular of a franchise DKC is. I never would have guessed by the fourth Smash game we still wouldn't have Dixie Kong. She's no Samus, but she's still one of Nintendo's earliest Heroines.

I hate what the buyout did to DK. As much as I love Jungle Beat, thank god it didn't make the numbers they wanted. I would have been so upset if Diddy and everything that comes with DKC would have been lost in time.

Are we still doing the "Five more characters" thing?

If so...

Ridley - Space dragon. Whether or not the character is iconic, the character is a giant space dragon. I don't understand why people would possibly not want that.

Paper Mario - With a unique moveset, of course. Maybe a neutral special that switches out partners between a few from the first two games and a down special that uses one of their abilities. Perhaps a "Tattle" taunt to fill in for the lost features of Snake.

Impa - I had no idea how much interest I had in playing as Impa until leaks suggesting her inclusion started to come up. Plus, this would be a nice way to acknowledge her usually-minor roles in almost every major Zelda game.

Mach Rider - Mostly to force Nintendo to think about a franchise revival.

Ice Climbers

You're a terrible person that's also very very wrong. Kid Icarus Uprising has some of the best English voice acting in any game ever.

But I do agree an option like Melee would be nice though.

Dixie wasn't in the original Diddy Kong Racing, only in the DS version.

It's fine if you think the arguement is meaningless. It probably was. But if you feel so strongly that way, why even say anything? The debate was more for fun than anything. At least I've been contributing actual information to the topic of discussion, rather than constructing an incredibly poor devil's advocate arguement based on absolutely nothing that is so incredibly unlikely it hurts. Yeah I can't be 100% certain of this. But you can rarely ever be 100% certain of anything, and you'd be hard pressed to find any subject that requires 100% accuracy to say that something is proven

I'm confused why they did it as well. It might have just been the developers wanting to throw some fresh Kongs in there since Kiddy was replaced by Chunky in a similar fashion to Dixie and Tiny.

Should've specified in the post, but that was what I was referring to since her and Tiny replaced Banjo and Conker.

I really don't know what to think of Jungle Beat. Sometimes I think it was just the developers wanting creative freedom to do what they wanted with the IP, but at the same time it feels very arrogant to discard almost everything the series is known for.

Rare had a thing for doing that. It's probably why.

We almost got an incredibly offensive Redneck Kong. No thanks.

Mario Kart Wii outsold every game Ganondorf appeared in (Twilight Princess + Ocarina of Time + Wind Waker).

Ganondorf deconfirmed; Funky Kong confirmed.

So was it 100% confirmed today that the CPP would be used (and thus making it the only proper way to play)?

Just need to make sure before I order the stupid XL CPP from amazon.

I took it as a sign of "looks like you guys forced our hand."
I think it's kind of a double entendre. Shulk says that in Xenoblade when you get in a battle with a stronger enemy, but I also think it is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the leak.
Apparently Shulk can say it if you're forced to fight an enemy significantly stronger than you (red-colored name tag). Amusing choice of title, though.
Ohh, interesting.

And in the pic of the day: "He's not the type of character that would usually appear in the Smash Bros. series" Why is he? Sorry for asking so many questions. :p

I'm going to guess that Shulk is the last character getting a trailer. Nearly two weeks until the Japanese launch. There's not going to be anything besides commercials until a store breaks street date.

In fairness, it's not like it's the same VA from Uprising.

True, and if he said something along the lines of "I really preferred playing Xenoblade in Japanese so I hope there's an option for Japanese voices" that's one thing. It's just that arrogance of "SUPERIOR Japanese voices" talk that bugs the crap out of me. This isn't the 90s.

I still think Chorus Kids are the last character in the 3DS Version.

1. Gematsu. Come on! The only thing he got wrong was Chrom, but there's evidence enough that Chrom may have been planned at one point, and we did get an Awakening Rep. I can't imagine Chorus Men were completely fabricated.

2. Sneaky Spirit. Yeah, we've seen the Polar Bear, but as far as I know only in two shots, one which was quickly removed. The other was in a press packet, so it couldn't be recalled. I think Mr. Polar Bear was included early on, but the Climbers got the boot. Still, we have Sneaky Spirit in the demos, so I think that signifies something.

3. The Stages. There seems to be a weird open space in the Stage Select Screen. I'm guessing there's a Rhythm Heaven Stage left that for someone reason was missing in the ESRB, and Chorus Kids being unlocked unlocks their stage. They seem like the type of character you get at the end of the game.

Mark my words, we'll see them September 13. :)
