Well, Zelda got 3 newcomers from 64 to Melee, and another one in Brawl. It isn't that bad compared to other franchises. Plus it's getting new stages and assist trophies.While we're complaining about DK, we should take this opportunity to complain about Zelda and Metroid. No newcomers from either.
I would have sworn we would have gotten a Wario Land Shake It! Stage since that was a new Wario Land game. Would have been interesting if you ask me.

Damn, so many folks set on this being the final roster even though nothing has changed recently.
I am still going with the for trophies hypothesis. I think we will get Ridley, Impa/Demise, Mewtwo, and who knows what the other three will be. Hopefully Ice Climbers.

We probably wouldn't even notice if they did (unless they specified it directly). Would basically be a drop in the bucket that all the leaks have been filling.

I'm hoping your right! I'm not certain this is the final roster, but I wouldn't be surprised.
I'm pretty sure the leaked roster from the ESRB leaker was it pretty much. Think about it, when a game is given to the ESRB they have to assess all aspects of the game. Why WOULDN'T the full roster be unlocked? I mean the stages screen shows all the stages unlocked basically.

Zelda is actually in pretty good shape. It has pretty much all the recurring characters that matter (and two of them are in the roster twice!).
Metroid has a huge need for a third character though.

If Ridley and Impa were indeed playable, they would say 50+.
We also have 38-40 revealed already. The commercial is probably trying not to give up much if anything beyond what we already know.
Though we have the final roster, and I think the optimism here is misguided.

He probably wasn't supposed to mention the event at all, considering he seems to be the only source we heard from about it. I hope we don't get him in trouble.
I kinda wonder why Nintendo would even have an event like that in the first place. Especially if the leak hadn't already happen, this would just make it that much more possible for something like it to get out. They can't share their impressions until the point where they'll have a copy of the game any way, and no way it was enough time to write a review or whatever.
Yeah, it's really odd. Then again I look back at how MK8 was handled and it was pretty similar to this. They had a closed/private event for the press to play MK8 mid-late April, allowing them to play a bunch of tracks we hadn't seen yet (and that's where we got all those off-screen track videos from). That was MK8's first preview event and I think they had *another* the week before the press got their review copies of MK8.
So, if anything, this is really similar to that. Give the press a chance to preview the game before the inevitable Japanese release spoils everything and then let them post their impressions the day the Japanese release comes out. Send them a review copy of the localized version on the 13th and let them have the next two weeks to continue to build those impressions for their review.
It would kind of make sense to me in that way, I mean PAX would be a really easy event to hold something like this since so much of the press already go to it. And it just so happened to be exactly two weeks before the Japanese release.
I guess we'll see what happens in 2 weeks.

Yes, lets let everyone know that there are 50+ characters, when we haven't even announced 50 characters. come on.
Zelda got good stuff this game. Big changes to Zelda and Sheik with plenty of new stages, items, and ATs. Newcomers aside it did fine and I wouldn't compare it at all to DK's situation.
Donkey Kong historically got about the same amount of stuff in Smash as series like Mother and Star Fox which seems almost insane to say.

Yeah, #teamfullroster. While DLC does look likely, I don't think it will be out for at least 3-6 months. Each leaker has already stated they only know the content of the pictures / videos. Anything else seems wishful thinking unfortunately.

I find the idea that a whole bunch of people just found out juicy stuff but can't tell us somewhat frustrating, but that must be nothing compared to what they must be feeling: not being able to share/talk about the secret stuff they saw must be a special kind of agony 
I just know I saw a lot of people here post an article from GoNintendo or NintendoEverything or something on to get told it was Gaf>Internet>Gaf.

True, it makes perfect sense to do it here if they're gonna do it. I guess it just gives them time to have some initial thoughts prepared and ready to go once the game starts releasing.

Just saying, and this is coming from one of the most optimistic people here, it might be time to give up hope and then be lovingly surprised two weeks from now.

agreed 100% a hand drawn stage with would be a treat. Anything Wario Land would be great.

How would the 3DS handle the DLC though? And second, how would they handle character DLC in the first place? I'm hoping it's expansion styled like Capcom if it has to be payed for.

That said, I think the argument that the ad says "more than 40" because we've seen more than 40 characters but less than 50 and not because there are strictly less than 50 has its merits. I'm not sure how many have been officially revealed, but if say, the number of officially revealed characters is 45, saying "more than 50" would guarantee 5 more, which is something Nintendo might not want to reveal. Saying "more than 40" is a way to work around that.
I wouldn't use the ad to confirm/deny the final roster's size.

Same way it handled Awakening DLC I presume?
Basically that everything from the event today is a secret until the Japanese launch of the 3DS game. So they probably got to play the final game, possibly even the full roster.

I just think there are too many rumors out there for it to end this way. Plus that character select screen looks atrocious. It does not fit with Sakurai's usual standards.
