I totally respect and understand what you're saying, Ash. I definitely won't ask anything of you.

That said, I'm pretty sure whatever happened is gonna get out rather easily. Probably by someone who doesn't want their job any more, but someone none the less.

Just got back from the Nintendo play tour. Going to write up some impressions and post em.

Lets just say it was so much fucking fun.

Also do we have confirmation of Circle Pad Pro? I sure hope so.

Oh yeah. Someone's gonna break eventually. I can imagine a lot of eyes are on /v/ right now...

considering you'll be getting the actual game soon, you should be okay with amiibos right now. lol

are you getting it at midnight in the JP eshop?

That's true--I shouldn't complain, haha. I preordered the game and will have it delivered to my doorstep on release morning (I wanted a physical copy so I can get Sakurai to sign it), but I'm seriously dreading those 9-ish hours of anticipation... I might cave and download a copy and try to transfer the save data to my game card somehow.

OH man if you get Sakurai to sign that you are one lucky dude.

That's awesome! Are you going to some signing event over there or you'll be able to personally meet him or something?

Yeah, this will definitely test your patience. How's the Japanese gaming scene taking the anticipation for the 3DS version? Is there a lot of hype out there?

All good, Ash! Being on the cusp of entering the gaming industry myself (website journalist), I can't imagine what it's like to hold all that info in, lol

in the vast lands of gaur plains Lucas is buried somewhere, never to be remembered

look at how wrong you are

Play the game. Listening to a great new song is part of the fun of getting to a new area.

I'm interested in the N3DS version. :-)

Also, I see you hid a link to "Engage the Enemy" in your post. Sounds like the end credits theme from DKC2. Nice!

Thanks!

As the thread's stealth NOA rep, I have a flaming crossbow aimed at Ash should he slip up and break his NDA

His eyes are watching... careful ash, you heard him!

I seriously can't wait for the 3DS version to drop. Gonna be great on long trips. I also can't wait for LA GAF to meet up so I can kick all your asses with my yellow villager!

I'm ready for it. He is a beast when I played against him, but couldn't for the life of me figure out how to play with him. need more time.

Soooooo... I'm in a bit of a pickle, guys. I really want to keep sharing in the pre-release Smash hype with you all, but I fear everything I say from here on out will come with the huge caveat of me having attended today's media event, making you all suspicious of what I know or don't know.

You guys already know that I can't and won't share anything I might have seen or played from today's event, so there's that. So I guess all I can do is just see how things go for the next day or so, but if I feel like the context of everything I say is being threatened by my having gone to this event or like there's any conflict of interest at all, I'll probably just have to become a ghost until the game launches in Japan. I don't want to do that at all, though, so if ya'll can do me a favor and not ask me about the media event and/or cast everything I say under a light of suspicion, I'd really appreciate it. Rest assured that there are still many things I don't know; I'm very much still just a fan waiitng hungrily for more information, like the rest of you. I don't suddenly "know everything." Either way, all questions directed to me about the media event or just going to go ignored, no matter how vague or "safe" they might be.

...

You know I can't. I love you guys, but I love my job(s) and professional standing just a little bit more. :P

No worries, we know you can't tell us and I think most would prefer to keep hearing you on the GameXplain vids over getting a few days headstart on info we'll know soon anyhoo, so no pressure here :3

You gonna be snapping up a Megaman Amiibo whenever that wave comes out? :D

Ah you played as him today? I know what you mean. I played as him at SDCC for a while to try to get a feel of what makes him good. I think the secret is in the shovel and the loid rockets. His down smash is pretty useful. The tree is pretty useless unless you can somehow exploit that axe but I still havent figured out how to keep the tree longer...

I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF MY BOY LUCAS MADE IT BACK IN!!! :(
We all do...

I'm afraid my Brawl main is gone for good. ;_;

I literally just got back from purchasing the download card at my local 7-11. I had an Amazon preorder, but decided to cancel. I need it at midnight.

NEWCOMER REVEAL SCHEDULE TALK:

So the 3DS version comes out in Japan on Saturday, Sept. 13. It's not unusual for games to have launch trailers or announcements thereabouts. I'm hoping... that Bowser Jr. will have his newcomer trailer shown next week or the week thereafter. Since Mario is Nintendo's most popular franchise this side of Pokémon, a reveal trailer for Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings would generate mad hype.

Also, I guess Duck Hunt could be saved as a hidden unlockable, but how awesome would it be if Duck Hunt was in the same trailer as Bowser Jr., much like how Duck Hunt was included on the same cart as SMB1?

Alright so I went to the Nintendo Play Tour in Irvine and it was an absolute blast. Drove down from LA, about 45 miles, and yet it took 2.5 hours, thanks to rush hour LA traffic, 3 accidents (fender benders) and road work.

Fortunately I got there by 7:30 and the people working the booth were amazing. They let me play until close at 10. So 2.5 hours of traffic was worth it for 2.5 hours of smash bros. I was super lucky. Outside of maybe 6 occasions there was never a line, and when there was I would finish my match and jump to the back. The largest the line ever got was 5 people so I played almost the entire 2.5 hours non stop.

Quick tip for anyone going to this event: The damn shield button is on the R button and the grab on the L. This killed me. Took me a solid 5-10 matches before I wasn't hitting the wrong button the whole time. You can't change this control in the demo, it's the E3 build. So just be prepared. I had so many mistakes those first few matches thanks to this.

Bring earbuds, headphones w.e You will want to hear the game.

No photos :(

The game is FFA single only. I played smash run twice, I would say unless you're lucky like me and have tons of time to play stick with normal smash.

I’ll just go into my major take aways, some characters I didn’t spend much time with to get any meaningful impressions so I won’t have them listed.

Samus (My favorite and hopefully Main)
Plays much more like Melee, except I noticed a significant buff to her launch from her smash attacks, and she seemed far more agile and weighty than brawl. Felt like the tightest version of the character, and now with a much better final smash she is a definite force to contend with. I really think she will be a viable contender for once.

Bowser
Big, Fast and awesome. Won two FFA with 3 LVL 9 CPUs with this big dude. He is also really fun. I only really felt vulnerable to range attacks and air. Otherwise I had full control of the field.

Pit
Wow. What a total change. From the floaty weak brawl version to what we have now. Back in brawl I still loved playing with him, but he lacked good options for launching your opponent off the level. His 3 specials being changed have dramatically changed this. Along with his standard attack. The dual shields came in handy, especially when I went against fox and greninja. The side smash is a beast if you can get the timing down, and his B up had definitely been toned down, though it does go crazy high, you don’t have anywhere near the maneuverability as before. Which is good, because it was cheap as all hell.

Villager
Wow, I had no idea how to play as him. Wish I had spent more time with it, but early on I focused on new guys not knowing how many games I would get. After two matches with him I had no idea what to do still. He has a strange combination of attacks, most of which don’t fit well with my play style. If I had known I would get as much time as I did I might have given him another go. That being said the CPU Villager was great, but mechanically he appears to have a bigger learning curve than I could handle in the short time. I attribute his lack of usefulness to my skills and familiarity with the play style, not necessarily to The Villager him/herself. Just don't expect to jump in and own the place.

Wii Fit Trainer
Okay, this character did not disappoint at all. I was hyped and she delivered big time. Could be one of my Main in this version. Her range attacks are easy to pull off and deal decent damage. Both are fairly effective at clearing the stage as well. What’s better is she is very very fast, and has great air tactics. I felt in total control using her move set, and it was really tight, not floaty. I expect to see a lot of people playing with Wii Fit Trainer in the new game. An absolute joy to play with, very easy to get and keep your opponent in the air and take them down.

Greninja
Another one who played very much how I expected. Fast, and again very tight controls. Was able to quickly understand his jump, dash and abilities when it came to how and where he could move distance wise. No guess work, it just felt right. Had him down before the battle even started after a good 30 seconds in the sandbag training area. He’s very fast, think Shiek/ZSS/Wii Fit has a couple of great smash attacks and one decent range. His play style seems really fun and the shiny black color for him is great. I can see him being popular, will most likely be using him a lot as well.

MegaMan
:( Man he did not play like I expected. His range attacks aren’t all that strong, nor do they have very good range. His close combat isn’t very tight either. Maybe I just need more time to learn the finesse of all of his moves (which look awesome) but it seems like he might be one of the weaker characters in the game. Unlike Villager, i think he just might not have the same potential. A damn shame too.

Little Mac
A beast. No air game like we know, but his recovery wasn’t as bad as it has been made out in many impressions. I used it just fine to get back on the stage a few times. It’s not great, but not awful either. His super punch is massive, like a final smash BUT its got a huge build up. You’ve really got to be in a bad spot to get hit by this, or just end up screwed by having too much going on. otherwise I imagine people will easily avoid it. There’s a significant build up and delay before he launches the big punch. It makes the falcon punch look fast. That being said, I was lucky enough to get to use his final smash, and you turn into an absolute unstoppable monster. I cleared all 3 CPUs. So much fun.

That’s about it for the characters.

Here’s what I think needs to be said about the game.

This game Needs Circle Pad Pro. I suppose I can do without C-Stick no problem, but man, the 3DS is not ergonomic for this kind of game. I was getting some hand cramps. Also the slider wasn’t very accurate half the time I wanted to run I really had to slam the stick. I’ll chalk this up to the demo units probably having tons of use and taking a beating, but it doesn’t seem like it will be as easy to play on what will be the Superior Wii U version.

Also I think it could use the bumpers on the CPP well. I will be upgrading to New 3DS XL in 2015, but until then I can’t imagine playing this for long without the CPP or at least some kind of grips for the handheld to make it more like a controller.

Beyond this, I felt 4 player matches were a bit crowded and at times hard to follow on the small screen (I was playing on a XL). It wasn’t impossible but i had to turn off 3D which I normal like and still had trouble following especially with items on. The game was butter smooth the entire time, even with all thats hit going on, which is great. It’s just unfortunately not easy at all times to follow along with all the action.

With all of that being said, it looks amazing, feels great was a ton of fun and I can not wait for release. Tonight is just going to make it a whole lot easier, at least now I'm not dying for a taste of smash.

I know. :/ On the bright side, I saw this beautiful piece of art at Shinjuku Station a few minutes ago!

Nintendo rocking that advertisement.

Kind of a shame there's no worldwide release. :(

Still 5 weeks for 90% of us.

I'll pass time by viewing player screenshots on JP's Miiverse.

Also, this game's gonna sell a ton, isn't it? The whole double pack is sweet too.

Embargo sucks, wonder how long it's going to be until it leaks to 4chan.

Though I think most people that could leak aren't going to have the information I'm interested in, assuming it was just the final version with the starting roster, not as if 90% of the people there will even know what landing lag or shieldstun is.

Holy shit, that's so cool. I so wish I was in Japan right now to see all this Smash (and Mega Man in Smash) advertisement love in person. I was there earlier this year and it was amazing, but this would have made it even better.

Having gone to school for journalism, I understand completely. It's an amazing thing to see behind the scenes of stuff, and to report the news- and a part of me wishes I was still doing that.

On that note, I'm jealous you got to play and see some things that I hope are amazingly awesome and unexpected despite the leak.

It's all good. We understand, besides it's only two weeks. I think we can manage until the 13th. I hope what you saw is different from the leaks though, at least with how vets played that we haven't seen or heard of yet.

Psychically beam all images to my mind please and thank you.

Glad you got to go to the event though. Can't wait to talk full roster with ya when the NDA is up.

Blah blah, Ganondorf, blah blah, Smashing, blah blah.

Totally understandable Ash. You and the guys at GameXplain do a great job and i'd say we should respect your wishes and help you maintain a professional status in gaming journalism.

If anything, if the embargo lifts by the JP release I want to see you guys go nuts with info. lol/QUOTE]

Thanks all, I really appreciate it. I don't think the communities at GameFAQs or Smashboards would be so mature/understanding. :P

And yeah, munchie64, that's very possible and maybe even likely. It ain't gonna be me, though!

As the thread's stealth NOA rep, I have a flaming crossbow aimed at Ash should he slip up and break his NDA

I knew there was something suspicious about you! You're actually Kit from Nintendo Minute, aren't you? ... or are you Krysta?!

OH man if you get Sakurai to sign that you are one lucky dude.

I just happen to have mutual friends :)

Yeah, this will definitely test your patience. How's the Japanese gaming scene taking the anticipation for the 3DS version? Is there a lot of hype out there?

I'm going to the Press Start concert that he and a friend of mine organize every year, and I'll be saying hello to my friend (Shogo Sakai) after the show, so I'll be saying "hello/thanks/I love you" to Sakurai as well :)

Everyone's really pumped! Half the tweets I see are basically "omg I just want to play it right now," haha.

Those Samus impressions make me very very happy.

Also, I'm sorry Snake fans, but playing Brawl last night and being forced to hear Snake Eater for 4 tedious minutes. Never been so glad he's been gone.

Good stuff.

I'm jealous lol

I'll be sure to post here right after the show! My goals are: 1) get his autograph on my copy of the game, 2) take a picture with him while doing Jojo stands, and 3) play against him in Smash, lol.

Also, I'm sorry Snake fans, but playing Brawl last night and being forced to hear Snake Eater for 4 tedious minutes. Never been so glad he's been gone.

I give my liiiiiiiiiiiife, not for honor, but for youuuuuuuuuuu

Lurker perspective: TOO MANY PEOPLE spell Gaur Plains as Guar Plains

IT'S GAUR PLAINS

you wouldn't write MAIRO
or SHLUK
or PAECH
or DUCK HUNT DÖG
or RIDDLEY

Man, that sounds like so much fun! I wish there was an event near me that I could play at, but I guess I'll just have to wait until the release. >_>

Mega Man being weak is something I've heard a lot though, and it's making me sad. ='[

Same :( I was hoping to use him a lot. Could just have a steep learning curve, but it didn't seem like his weaknesses were attributable to my lack of skill or familiarity with the character. He just seemed under powered, not enough strength to be good for close combat, or range attacks, nor is he very speedy. :/

Good stuff.

Haha thanks. If it comes off as rambling at times I'll use my tiredness as an excuse for just sort of writing out my thoughts without being very succinct or articulate. Just wanted to share, all my buds who I will play smash with are sleeping on the east coast, so I needed to get everything I wanted to talk about out lol. Looking forward to meeting up with some LA people for some local smash, and playing GAFers online as well. Great Smash community we have here.
