While the roster is pretty good (outside of the probable IC cut) the stage selection is the only disappointing part honestly. no new dk, starfox, or Yoshi stage while getting 4 new mario stages hurts

Is this the final stage roster?
If so then it's fucking lame.

The return of Mushroomy Kinngdom seems so pointless and redundant when we already have 3 Mario stages that focus on transitions. Not to mention we already have 4 Mario stages in general. Mario didn't need a classic stage if the stage roster is this small.

And while I always thought Mushroomy Kingdom was a neat stage, I don't really like to fight on it.

I'm more pissed about there only being two songs per stage in the 3DS version. What the hell is up with that? Brawl's soundtrack, if examined in a vacuum (i.e. disregarding the fact that most of the tracks are different arrangements or remixes of pre-existing tunes and not original) is one of the best soundtracks of all time, across any medium ever. Surely they can't blame "3DS limitations" on having such a pitiful song selection. The 3DS version will be my main version, since I don't have a television in my new apartment and I left my Wii U at my family home so my sisters could enjoy it.

Fucking Samurai

Samurai is actually one of my favorite people alive and I'll love him until the day I die, so I guess I can forgive this minor transgression

I just don't like her inclusion, because I'm not into Wii Fit. I'll never play as her, though my friend probably will to annoy me. I'll just beat him up.

Not just you, but everyone seems to hate her. She seems like a really fun, quirky addition to Nintendo's roster as far as I'm concerned. It looks like they gave her a bit of a personality in Smash as well.

I think the stage selection is pretty good when you take into account that they're developing two different versions at the same time.

It's entirely possible that nostalgia has a lot to do with it, but I always liked the stage layouts in the original Smash Bros as much if not moreso than anything else the series has done since. The original Peach's Castle with those angled walls, Hyrule Castle was long but had some nice changes in geometry...A lot of them obviously feel more simplistic in approach than more recent stages, but I liked it that way. There are too many now with needless background transitions and crazy crap happening, and while those can be fun nods to the games they're inspired by I think it kind of hurts the focus that should be on the actual fighting.

Agreed. Sakurai's overcomplicating things in the case of stages. As you said the focus should be on the fighting, but it's hard to do that when more than half of the stages scroll or have transitions between different parts. Some of my favourite stages in Brawl were Oldin's Bridge, Pirate Ship and Shadow Moses: there are a bunch of things happening in those, but no scrolling and no crazy transitions like in WarioWare.

I still think to this day that the original Sector Z is the best stage in Smash's history.

Yeah but you shouldn't look at that. You're paying full price for both versions after all.

The thing about the stages is that they spent time and resources making not just 4 new Mario stages for the handheld version alone, but brand new stages for series that don't even have playable characters like balloon fight and living room. I don't have a problem with those stages existing, but not at the expense of a DK, Metroid or Starfox stage. Hell, DKCR3D and SF643D have perfectly usable assets they can just rip from them like they did other stages (rainbow road, gerudo valley).

Edit: and I wouldn't have a problem with 10 past stages if they weren't all playable in Brawl.

This.

Yeah I don't think Wario is changing much judging by that Trophy.
I didn't expect him to. I actually enjoy his crazy moveset.

I think he means stage rep
Yep. I mean Wario Ware on the 3DS version makes sense and, hey, I actually predicted this stage back in the Dojo day, so I like the stage both for that reason and because I quite like its gimmick (I don't expect the power distribution to have changed). But I did really want a Wario Land stage if only for the music.

Well I still have hope for the Wii U version. At worst, it being the one with more music should hopefully grant me that one wish.

Actually, I wonder what Wario Ware stage music will make it into the 3DS version... hmmm... I may ponder over this for all the returning Brawl stages to the 3DS version.

I feel like Daisy's too fundamentally different than Peach to work as an alt. The Toad counter, turnip plucking, and even the pink heart and rainbow effects don't really suit her. She's better off as a semi-clone, but that seems like way too much effort for a character like her. She'll probably stay an alternate color homage for Peach.

Daisy had a pink heart special in Double Dash just like Peach. Picking up turnip and the Toad bit would be odd though, granted, but I don't think it'd be any worse than what we already have in the game with some other characters.

In a world of wonderful dreams, Wario Ware being moved to the 3DS version could mean that we get a sweet-looking cel-painted stage based on Wario Land Shake It. Oh how I would drool over something like that in HD.

Granted that will never happen but it's nice to dream.

Probably the main theme and the medley. Can't really see them putting one of the songs unless it's in both languages.

Assuming they're gonna go with the Brawl music that is.

except those are just final destination, which is already a stage.

so in a way, it's an awful cop out.
Actually no, they are not "just" Final Destination. Some are wider, some don't float but are a huge block emerging from the lower blast zone etc. Although this seems like minor changes they could pretty severly affect matchups on each variation.
Don't know how many variations, but at least they are like 3+ or so "new" stages.

I'm going to want to see proof of that, because it goes against what we've already been told. The only differences I'm seeing are based on camera zoom so far.

I bought Kirby Fighters Deluxe for 810 yen, and I'll be streaming that in the days leading up to the Smash release. It looks similar to Smash Bros.

I was hoping that Smash 4 would have more or different melee stages.Fountain of dreams was the coolest looking stage and the song that came with it made it so magical.

I'm just glad we have FD versions in case any of the new stages are unbearably awful to play on but you'll still be able to play using their backgrounds and music, unlike in Brawl.

Pac-Maze has a different edge and seems to go all the way to the lower blast zone. That's the most obvious one. I'll also try to find a pic of the HUGE Palutena's Temple Omega Form.

I actually think that might be the reason they call em Omega Form instead of Final Destination form - because these stages ARE NOT FD CLONES

EDIT: Got one

The Animal Crossing FD is a block of earth extending from the ground, as is OoT.

Fair enough, I did forget about those. I don't think it's a significant enough change not to lump them into separate categories, but people will likely disagree with me on that anyway.

At the end of the day I wanted a stage roster that was comparable to Brawl's with 31 new stages. Flat platform variations of preexisting and classic stages doesn't really do that for me. I do like the new ones we've seen, but having to pad out the roster with all these Brawl stages just to make it look complete says a lot.

Do you want to start a silly debate about having minor differences while still mimicking the layout of final destination exempts them from being final destination? Cause I'll do it.

We know of a new starfox stage on Wii U.

Yoshi stage seems unrealistic, been a while since a substantial new yoshi game came out.

I really have to wonder. How many people are actually going to use the final destination forms?

Depends. I'm assuming with the focus on final destination forms of stages, and 'for glory' being final destination only, a huge part of balancing is probably balancing around final destination stages.

If it's truly balanced around that, and the metagame revolves around that, then possibly a lot. Especially since people might want to practice to get better in 'for glory,' if it actually becomes popular.

Yoshi's New Island came out earlier this year, and we've known about Wooly World (which was revealed over a year ago as Yarn Yoshi) for quite a while.

Yoshi's actually been having a bit of a boom as far as games go.
