Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

What's really killing me is that for some reason, threads on NeoGAF lately aren't loading properly, so I can't actually see pages of a thread once they've loaded to a certain point.

I loved the shit out of Distant Planet, NPC, WarioWare, and Mushroomy Kingdom; in fact, I can't even think of a single Brawl stage I hated.

I totally agree the 3DS stage roster is pretty assy, but sometimes I feel like I must be the only Smash player who doesn't have a single problem with stage hazards/scrolling stages, particularly since I get the impression people dismiss the latter just because of the concept (the criticism towards WarioWare confuses me as well since it's really easy to multitask).

I don't see rumble falls on that list

The only stages I didn't like in Brawl were Mario Bros more because the koopa shells were too op and turned the match into a game of dodge ball. Massively lower the knock back on the shells and the stage would have been enjoyable.

New Pork City was trash, a large U shape is a terrible idea for Smash and you really shouldn't have a stage bigger then Temple which is the limit to how big a big stage should be.

I liked 75m, flatzone 2, mushroomy kingdom, and the various other stages people hated.

New Pork should've been set inside the city on actual buildings and the ferris wheel. As it is it seemed like a bad stage builder stage.

Yeah, I still don't know what the hell that stage was supposed to be. A bunch of random blocks floating around in front of a city, and then a monster eats you. ok.

I don't think there's 1 thing no one likes in any Smash.

People even like tripping like myself.
Some people even like Marios Fludd.
The only sort of item that I know no one liked was Brawls Shit Netcode.

Yeah well... you're always shattering the norms around here >_>

I dismiss scrolling stages not because of their concept but because every single scrolling stage they've introduced simply have not been good or fun. Every single one of them has had annoying flaws that keep them from being enjoyable. They have not proven to me they are capable of making scrolling stages actually fun. Plus, they have the same inherent problem walk-offs have: camp the blastzones and get lame KOs by throwing people towards the blastzone. I don't know how that's fun for anyone and having a "rule" for it to stop it from happening only proves that the stage is bad.

You only talk about actual mechanics, right? Otherwise - Brawl's load times when booted on a Wii. Fuck that shit lol

I don't see this happening, sadly.

I'm losing faith, but man, I would buy that the second it went on for sale. For both versions. I realize the games will be packed with content already, but there's something about having it all...

Arena Ferox is the only 3DS stage I'd want on the WiiU.

I'm hoping there's another Fire Emblem stage in the Wii U version. The Coliseum strikes to me as one of the blandest stages in the series (could be considerably better if it didn't have walk off edges). So yeah, I'd love Arena Ferox on the U. And the Pac-Man one, feels like a crime not to have an arcade-based stage for the Pac on the big screen.....And that Balloon Fight stage, and that SNES F-Zero one....And all of the classic stages...I'd buy all of them, really.

I found that Brawl's online worked if I was doing 1vs1 against a friend. Any more than that, or if I tried to play against strangers, it became a laggy mess.

I liked Rainbow Cruise a lot :(

I can appreciate your overall point though, there are more misses than hits amongst the scrolling stages.I just don't think they are all bad.

Agreed. Easily!

THiS can T be HAPPeniiiN g

All this discussion of shitty stages reminds me that we need the stage creator to come back. I hope to God it's in there. At least make it DLC if its not.

Wasn't Mute City in one of the GBA game then?

I haven't played either of them, but it was in GP Legend and Climax, yeah (though it looks totally different in the latter). All the GBA games have a 3/4 overhead view of vehicles and basically no space between background objects and the top of the screen, while both the SNES game and the stage preview shot have a decent amount of sky and a direct back view of the vehicle (which makes more sense if it's going to be used as a platform, which it seems it will). Plus Nintendo loves referencing the SNES game and more or less hasn't recognized the existence of the GBA ones other than rereleases, lol.

Yes, the 3DS stages are really under-represented but the new ones are all fantastic.

FD on 3DS is fucking stunning.

Also, FD stages technically double the stage list, so I'm okay with it all.

Well, there is no doubt Smash will get DLC at some point.. I wonder how Nintendo will handle it..

If done right, they can keep the game fresh, without those 6 year gaps between updates/generations

Brawl has the best stage selection in the series.

There I said it.

I appreciate what it's got to offer, but I believe Melee has the upperhand both in variety and in creativity in design. There's a bit too many Brawl stages that stick too close to the " - __ - " school of layout. Melee mixed it more, and I think, went further with its imagination than Brawl did.

I do applaud the likes of Castle Siege, WarioWare, Pictochat, The Bridge of Eldin, The Pirate Ship, Distant Planet, Delphino Plaza, Norfair and The Summit, plus that in-real-time detail at Smashville.

Kongo Jungle and Pokéfloats are really the only two Melee stages I'd really want to see return.

Honestly, for the most part, the return stages in Brawl got it pretty much right.

Delfino Plaza. I rest my case.

Seriously though I think it has the best balance between great straight stages and great gimmick stages. Fantastic inventiveness in stuff like Warioware and great designs with stuff like Yoshi's Island. Chuck in most of the best Melee stages and you got a winner.

Also I grew up in the Gamecube era so I have a bias towards games rep'd in Brawl.

I realize I'm in the minority here but I really, really liked Brinstar Depths, and was disappointed Brinstar was Metroid's past stage in Brawl. Frigate Orpheon tries to employ the same gimmicks, but it can't begin to compare to the concept, atmosphere and damn fun of Depths.

Brawl has a great selection of Melee stages, but a lot of original stages are really uninteresting. Most of gimmicky stages are disposable. I far prefer Rainbow Cruise or PokeFloats to the likes of 75m or Hanenbow. Flat Zone 2 is worse than Flat Zone. New Pork City is dreadful while Hyrule Temple was one of my Melee favs. Too many stages were simply platforms floating in front of the background, while I felt Melee's stages were more incorporated into the background (the aforementioned Temple, StarFox stages, Peach Castle, Big Blue).

And where is DreamLand 64 for that Gourmet Race goodness :(

7. Foreign people will no doubt be quite excited for this!! Of course, Japanese users too. Think I'm going to buy the Xenoblade remake next year; I've never played it *sweats*

11. There was a Direct today and I didn't even know about it?! And Shulk is in Smash!! I mean, I wanted him in but I never actually thought he'd make it...They're probably going crazy with excitement overseas lol but I don't think that leak is real so I'm looking forward to the hidden characters! Continue to work hard, even after the 3DS version releases! I support you!

I'm quite puzzled at the bolded, frankly. Why would Japanese people think Xenoblade is much more loved overseas? To me it seems more in line with Japanese tastes in general, and I don't remember it selling all that spectacularly in the west. Did it bomb horribly in Japan or something?
