Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Doesn't really matter to me. This is my last Smash Bros game.

Indeed, it's probably my last game too.

I feel like Rosalina's trailer needed to be more about Rosalina

Xenoblade, itself, is clearly not a one-time franchise. The first one is being remade for 3DS, and there is a spiritual successor on the way. Shulk might not appear in new Xenoblade titles going forward, but much like how Ness is an evergreen title to represent Mother, so too could Shulk be an evergreen character to represent Xenoblade.

Xenoblade theoretically should be like Fire Emblem or Pokemon in support as far as further Smash games are concerned... Like there is Marth who is the first Fire Emblem protagonist, and Pikachu who was the most well known of the original 151 Pokemon, but then you had Ike & Lucario in Brawl and Robin & Greninja in this game who are the most recent Fire Emblem protagonist and one of the most popular of the most recent Pokemon. Applying this logic to Xenoblade would mean that Shulk is the mainstay for Xenoblade, since he is the first Xenoblade protagonist, while we could get the protagonist from the most recent Xenoblade game as well in the next Smash.

If you don't mind me asking, why is that?
Will be replaced by Riki in the next one.
Lol riki vs duck hunt dog

As soon as I finish peace walker, xenoblade is next!
Nice!
You won't regret it!

Unless you're obsessive like me and try to do every quest as soon as its available. Then you'll regret it, like, 100 hours in but by the end you won't regret it anymore.

Lol we will see how that goes

The doc has already proven that wrong, lol

And I hope Robin stays.
Well yeah, but it could be like Melee > Brawl where doesn't make an appareance again and stays a trophy. Yeah, Robin is really unique, but with a new game FE coming, I dunno if he could stay. However, about Lucina, I'm certain she will be cut... or she could stay in Horizon's avatar forever.
Lucina will stay FOREVER
in my heart

The greatest thing. I seriously hope the reason Reyn isn't in Shulk's FS is that he's an assist trophy or something.

Maybe Shulk's FS is random and it changes to different characters?

I mean, it seems like it'd behave the same way otherwise.

As a guy who's beginning to fear this game might end up less fun than Brawl, why're all y'all not getting another Smash? Assuming this game doesn't live forever through DLC.

Which I'm cool with so long as we get Boss Toggle, more stages (Necessary for 3DS), and the Melee/Brawl cuts & the trio of Ridley, Bayo, and Wonder Red (And maybe Bomberman/Mach Rider/Sami).

This is your last Smash game? What, are you expecting to be dead by the time the next one comes out?

I'm guessing this is really about mounting responsibilities in life -> less time for video games

Lol riki vs duck hunt dog
I would like to see that fight. Would spectate and wager virtual Smash Gold.

I don't see Robin

staying for the next Smash unless IS makes Awakening 2 a direct sequel and that alone would be pretty surprising to me.

Agreed, how can you quit Smash Bros cold turkey. But...how will Smash 4 end up less fun than Brawl?

Even if I could play games like 2-3 times a year... those 2-3 times would be for zelda/smash. There's always time for video games if they're important to you.

FE has had so few direct sequels I'll have to agree with you...I'm not a fan of Robin, and don't think Awakening touches the best of the best in the FE franchise, but I did enjoy Lucina so it will be a shame to see her go

So I'm about five characters into my "play as a character daily until Smash 3DS comes out" thing for Brawl and I have to say that while I don't subscribe to the "Brawl is slow and floaty" opinion at all, I feel Lucario is the one character who embodies that. His aura gimmick is really cool, but hardly any of his attacks feel like they're landing at all and his slow-motion acrobatics are really off-putting. Also, his dash attack is probably the wimpiest-looking attack in the game.

Of course, this could just be my apathy towards Diamond/Pearl speaking, but he's just the only character in the game I don't have any fun playing with at all. That said, I think the aura mechanic appears much improved in Smash 4 and I'm looking forward to giving him another shot in the two versions.

Here is a question that'll divide this board worse than Team real/Team Fake or any discussion on Ridley/Takamaru/K Rool ever could.

Rank the character reveal videos.

  1. Mega Man - Gloves are off now, holy shit look at this guy right here.
  2. Greninja - holy shit ninja frogs and fire lizards
  3. Robin/Lucina - Would be god tier if it had more Falcon. As it was, it was merely fantastic.
  4. Rosalina - Worth it for the crossover antics.
  5. Little Mac - Worth it for Doc, though knowing who it was from the very beginning of the trailer was sort of anti-hype. Art style was cool though.
  6. Pac-Man - Would've been a lot cooler if it were the E3 direct reveal, but the circle revealing itself as Pac-Man is fantastic.
  7. Wii Fit Trainer - Not too exciting, but not much needed to be said.
  8. Mii Fighters - Watching Iwata and Reggie duke it out was neat, but both the character reveal and the trailer itself weren't terribly exciting for me.
  9. Shulk - I have little interest in Xenoblade or Shulk so the trailer didn't do much for me. Plus everything about his face is unsettling to me. But the way it opened up with Bowser was pretty great.
  10. Villager - Poor Villager got the bum end of the stick by being in the initial reveal trailer, so nothing terribly exciting there. Memetic creepy stare sure did wonders for him, though.
  11. Palutena - I really just don't care about Palutena, at all. The anime bit did nothing for me and the gameplay snippets didn't make me too excited to try her.
  12. Sonic - If it even counts at all, that's easily the bottom, just because there was nothing exciting or new about it. Also Sonic Heroes ugh.

Man, I'm sad how Donkey Kong is getting the short end of the stick it seems.

B-but Mother fans---listen, I don't care about Mother at all. Like, I find both Earthbound and Mother 3 to be the most overrated games in the world and every time I see a discussion where people are patting themselves over the back about playing this "deep", "paradigm-changing game", I just leave. The hype for these games have ruined them for me, I tried both of them but couldn't get past the akward battle system and quirkiness.

But Donkey Kong...he's my dude. My best friend. I try to regularly re-play the DKC series whenever I can find the time, and it never lets me down. That Sakurai is flat out ignoring it basically this time around, literally giving it NOTHING new except some glorified cameos in Smash Run, just upsets me, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just because he sees it as inferior because it was made by western developers just like how Miyamoto apparently threw a hissy-fit about it.

I hope at the very least DK is GOOD this time around.

I don't think this'll be my last Smash game as much as I expect it to be THE last Smash game, unless EA tries to make a Smash Bros game with the two or three properties they bought from the Nintendo bankruptcy auction + Battlefield, Mass Effect, Fifa etc.

ALL of them. Hell Lucina has me excited to finally get into Marth as I was a Roy man in Melee.
I used to be a Roy man in Melee, but then in Brawl had to switch to Marth and, honestly? even tho I like Roy, Marth grew into me and I'm better with him even in Melee

If you don't mind me asking, why is that?
By the time the next game probably comes out I'll be in my thirties. I anticipate I'll probably have a family or other things in life to attend to by then. My gaming habits have already been in decline since college, I don't expect them to suddenly explode when I graduate and am looking for full-time work.

Wellp, just hit the end credits for peace walker, but I know there's tons more content. I think i'll put it on hold now for xenoblade.

Last time I played I got about 30 hours in and then something else came out and distracted me. Going to start over, I think, since I forgot a huge chunk of the story.

WiiU could still have it.

I know, but I have a deep seated fear that it won't be there for some reason. That was the best part of Brawl for me. I hated just about all of Brawl's stages because I felt they didn't work well with the game's physics. So I used the stage creator to build my own, and had tons of more fun on them. It got to the point my friends and family didn't even play on the built in stages most of the time. I really hope Sakurai appreciates how much some people loved the stage creator (even though it was rather limited... it was versatile enough).

You're out of your mind if you think Robin is going to be cut after Ike carried over from Brawl.

What if in the next FE game we get another (new) tactician sword/magic user again?
Or a transforming one for that matter.
There are lots of ways IS can make the player character unique in their original game and interesting enough for Sakurai to put in the next Smash.
That's why I think Robin isn't coming back unless theres an Awakening sequel.

I feel like Rosalina's trailer needed to be more about Rosalina
Rosalina's trailer is definitely the hardest to rewatch, since it takes so long to actually get to Rosalina herself.

Likewise, while it was incredibly hype at the time, Little Mac's trailer takes a while to get going, and then once "Little Mac punches in," the gameplay montage itself is over rather quickly.

I think I prefer trailers like Lucina/Robin or Shulk where they get to the gameplay rather quickly and where they show a substantial amount of gameplay. Mega Man and Pac-Man would be other examples of this.

Oddly enough, Palutena was one of the characters I was most anticipating, and I'll probably love her a lot, but her trailer was the least focused in terms of setting a direction for how her characters plays. And the anime, while amazing, is a bit tiring on subsequent viewings.

I think Greninja's trailer worked well, despite having a lengthy buildup, because the buildup was INTENSE (Charizard crashing out of the sky, the face-off against Mario and the gang, etc). Makes it move along at a nice clip.

Wii Fit Trainer's trailer was short but sweet. It was a high-impact trailer that essentially saved the Smash reveal for me with its cleverness and unbridled sense of fun.

Just random thoughts on some of the trailers. I don't feel like ranking them.

Yeah, it baffles me how there is so little DK love is Smash.

I'm also shocked that there is no Zelda newcomer in this game.

Best trailers?

1. Shulk (The trailer was just pure Xenoblade fanservice. Can't stop watching it.)
2. Greninja (Once I saw that water shuriken, I just got so hype. He was the character I didn't know I wanted.)
3. Mega Man (What needs to be said? It was freaking Mega Man!)
4. Robin/Lucina (It's time to tip the scales! Also RIP Chrom)
5. Little Mac (Awesome artstyle, and Doc Louis made it for me)
6. Palutena (Smash anime when)
7. Mii Fighters (The Reggie vs Iwata fight was just awesome)
8. Rosalina (A little boring, but the CG was awesome)
9. Pac-Man (Short, but the circle becoming Pac-Man was great)
10. Wii Fit Trainer (Short, but it was funny)
11. Villager (His part was unfortunately far too short, but was still good nonetheless)

Ah I see. Very understandable and I respect your decision. Having a family myself and working full time my gaming is restricted to nights so I don't play as much. But when I do I love playing games with my 5 year old

Yup, agreed.

Honestly, I'm surprised Ike and Lucario made it in this Smash. But well, Ike had a sequel to his original game, and it's pretty obvious that we will be getting one or two new FE games in the next years, so Sakurai would look up on some characters to take up from those, and I doubt FE is gonna get that many reps. Maybe it could Marth, Ike and Robin + new FE characters, but I'm kinda expecting Robin to be taken out if Awakening doesn't have any sequel.
