Question: After the release of the Game Boy Color, did you know anybody without a Game Boy Color?
Well my parents for starters.

As for the DS Lite, I didn't upgrade my day one DS until the DSi came out.

Similar to how I'm still using a day one 3DS and will not upgrade until the ⪫New⪪ 3DS is out.

New game? Lol dat milking if its $40 , make it $20

Probably a "New" 3DS version with all characters since the new 3DS will have better specs .

I just want ice climbers for Wii u version, if they never come to the 3DS then no loss since I'll have the Wii u version >:)

Sakurai was all about the two games having the same roster. That always made sense to me until now. Now it doesn't feel fair. I would also rather have Ice Climbers on the Wii U than not at all.

See, for me, I always thought the DSi was a flop because it removed popular features (backwards compatibility) and added features nobody wanted (AAC playback) in their place. What was the selling point of a DSi? The New 3DS has MANY.

I'm aware of that, however, the DSi/Nu3DS have upgraded hardware, while the DS Lite was just a smaller DS (very like the 3DS XL is just a bigger 3DS). Hardware-wise, both DS/DS Lite and 3DS/3DSXL are the same, while DSi and Nu3DS are different. :)

Oh yeah, I couldn't agree more about that last part. I just know that some people (like Sah) would get pissed if that happened, so they should probably bring them to the 3DS version too, but unfortunately I'm pretty sure they could only work on N3DS. Cutting a character because the inferior version can't handle them is bad enough, but continuing to keep them out when an easy option presents itself is something else entirely.

Question: After the release of the Game Boy Color, did you know anybody without a Game Boy Color?

I was born in 1991 and grew up near Boston, so I lived in a reasonable representation of East Coast America. Pokémon fever hit us harder than a hurricane and every child had a GBC, but I never saw anybody with an original Game Boy. I've only ever seen ONE Game Boy in the hands of a player, playing some blurred attempt at Pokémon Blue, sitting on a curb in Maine.

To this day that's the only original Game Boy I've ever seen personally.

This is not dissimilar to the DS to the DS Lite. A year after the Lite was out, that's what you had. That machine was the hands down most popular version of the system and it wasn't even as big of an update as the New 3DS.

I'm curious what it was like for other people, because my experience suggests the New 3DS will be the standard machine very quickly.

That's funny, I was also born in 1991 and grew up in the Boston area. I recall the same scenario as well. My only memory of a Game Boy that wasn't the Color iteration was a boy with a Game Boy Pocket who would always complain because his wouldn't play Pokemon in color.

I get what you mean now. And I agree.

This is very funny to me.

What are you talking about? I literally just listed the reasons where it came from, even though it was admittedly unnecessary, since everyone probably knew that stuff already.
You really didn't. The whole "the additional characters are already being worked on (which is why they were able to be shown to ash at PAX), but they won't be ready for the WiiU release. Rather, they're being saved for "Super Smash Bros 6", which is a WiiU DLC pack/exclusive New3DS game, since the 3DS can't handle characters like the Ice Climbers." is a complete fabrication. You provided a reasoning for why you thought this (in a later post), but you presented it as if this was really the case.

3DS and Wii U versions having the same roster only for the "New" 3DS version to have a bigger roster would be pretty shitty. Here is Smash 4, 5 and 6. We know you will buy them all anyway.

Do we know the N3DS price?

n3ds is 16k yen and n3ds xl is 18.8k yen

So around $150-$180 dollars.

Same thing back in my day. I had a Game Boy Pocket until Pokemon G/S came out, and then I got a color. These days I really miss my Pocket...

You've got two weeks mate, same as me. It comes out on the 13th (12th for me in the UK). I know this as my CCNA exam is on the 13th and I have two weeks X_X

Today is Sunday AKA the start of the week.

It comes out on Saturday, the last day of next week.

Ergo, NEXT WEEK.

A N3DS enhanced version of Smash is an interesting idea. It would be a good way to get more mileage out of the game, and the 3DS version is probably going to sell the most anyways. It might be a hard sell though because any enhancements will surely come to the Wii U version as well.

Well obviously anyone who buys in after the N3DS launches will buy that. The problem is there are 45 million (?) 3DS out there. How many GB/GBP where out there before GBC launched? And were there a lot of games that didnt work on the GB but only worked for GBC? I remeber pokemon box art said GBC but it worked just fine on GB.

Crystal was the only Pokemon game that was GBC exclusive. With that said there were a fair amount of GBC only games. The thing was that the GB to GBC sat on the market for quite awhile and that jump was basically a soft way of introducing a new system which seems sort of like what they want to do with new 3DS.

See, for me, I always thought the DSi was a flop because it removed popular features (backwards compatibility) and added features nobody wanted (AAC playback) in their place. What was the selling point of a DSi? The New 3DS has MANY.

That is true. What I said above I think is logical. They know how the handheld market is so rather than introduce a new system right away. They want to do another slow transition like they did with GB and GBC. Hell did they say anything yet about games that would work on 3DS and perhaps get better performance on a new 3DS? I could see that being a big case for awhile. Much like no colors and one and colors on the other.

Based on those observations that we've all made, I think my conclusions are fairly intuitive. No need to be a jerk about it.

Sorry I didn't realise you counted Sunday as the start of the week. In the UK it's Monday-Sunday so it's the week after next for me :p

If there's a midnight launch near where I live I'll totally go dressed as this:

They won't let you in.

That was a sick burn that didn't get the recognition it deserved. Props!

In this pic tweeted by Bill Trinen we have 3 rows with 8 characters and one row with 3-4 characters.

Less than in the japanese pic, but more than the E3 build has (Source)

No way is Link not a starter.

googling her was not worth it

Hehehehe

I lost my copy of Melee. I remembered afterwards that my Gamecube does not actually output sound anymore so I'm not that bothered but I still want to play some form of Smash in the lead up.

GameCube discs play on Wiis as well.

Same thing back in my day. I had a Game Boy Pocket until Pokemon G/S came out, and then I got a color. These days I really miss my Pocket...

I saw a few GBPs, I think, but they were always abandoned in somebody's closet or toy drawer. There was one kid with rich parents who thought the GBP was a redesign of the GBC, a pretty common misconception among my friends, who got one and was not pleased when it wasn't in color.

In all honesty, if 3DS can handle four Rosalina and Luma's at once in 60fps/3D, as well as Duck Hunt Dog and its duck companion, there is little reason Ice Climbers can't be sorted out.

Well if it's treated as like a giant new expansion pack (like Super Luigi U), I don't think it would be that bad to make it N3DS exclusive. It also gets around the problem of having to hold back content from the WiiU version because of the low specs of the 3DS version, which seems to be happening right now. I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai gave up on trying to get the Ice Climbers and Chorus Kids to work once he heard about the N3DS, and just decided to save them for the update. That's why you still see Smash Run enemies from their series.

Maybe we'll get some new stages in Smash 6 too (that the 3DS couldn't handle), explaining the terrible stage roster?

Yeah! And it was posted around the time where at least I'd imagine they'd start thinking about this kind of thing, so it lines up in my mind.

Yeah, I mentioned this whole idea pages back. Made perfect sense to me.

Edit: to answer your question. I knew one kid who had a GB and one kid who had a GBP. I had a GBC.

Edit 2: Now that I think about it, red and blue box art said GB and it worked on GBC? But silver and gold said GBc. I'm guessing it didnt work on GB.

It had exclusives for a few years before the GBA came out. I think the Zelda Oracle games were also exclusive to it, so it's not unprecedented for Nintendo to do. Especially if the rumored specs are true, it's a substantial upgrade.

I don't think the DSi even had that big of an upgrade.

If Smash GAF ever runs out of things to debate about I could see a Sunday/Monday debate erupting…

Where did the whole PAX idea come from. At most people suspect that the final Japanese version was shown and they were told not to talk about the leaks. Nothing points towards DLC characters being shown.

Because Luma works nothing like Ice Climbers, and we have no idea how Duck Hunt plays. If the leaked roster is final and Ice Climbers are gone the only reason is that the 3ds couldn't handle a bunch of them while maintaining a solid 60fps which means the 3ds version was gimped from the start

pretty sure it comes out friday in north america

dem timezones :)

What are you paying in Europe? :(

Well if I remember correctly, retailers set the prices but they're all around the same to avoid be bested by another (except for Amazon which is cheaper in general anyway). I checked Gamestop a minute ago and a 3DS XL is €220 which comes out as over 30,000 yen. The (N)3DS XL is 18,800 yen which is just under €140.

In all honesty, if 3DS can handle four Rosalina and Luma's at once in 60fps/3D, as well as Duck Hunt Dog and its duck companion, there is little reason Ice Climbers can't be sorted out.

Except for the fact that the AI is more complex than for Rosalina and (assumingly) Duck Hunt's.

4 Ice Climbers caused issues in Melee and Brawl, and neither of those games had to limit non-player characters to 30fps just to run at a steady framerate, I think it's insane to believe they won't be running into problems with Ice Climbers on Smash 3DS, whether those problems were enough to cut them is yet to be seen, but I'm pretty sure they're gone.

And reducing the character to only one Ice Climber or changing the AI to be a lot more simple ruins the uniqueness of the character so that shouldn't be a solution.

silver and gold worked on gb and the box did say gbc.

20% of gbc games were playable on original gameboy.
80% were not. around 200 exclusives.

I don't think the DSi even had that big of an upgrade.

dsi also had a cpu clock and ram upgrade back then the ram was used as vram so there was no dedicated vram. and dsi also had 228 exclusive games through dsiware and 5 of those also came out to retail.

Sunday is the start of a new week in America. Considering my weekly work schedule always ends with a Saturday. And starts with a Sunday. So mystery solved. No room for debate.

But weekly word schedules can vary company to company as well! Lots of work schedules run Monday to Sunday!

It has begun. This is the beginning of the end.
