Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Starting Xenoblade probably in the next hour or so, please give me beginner tips, stuff that will save me grief, etc.
-Save often. It's easy.
-Don't worry if you don't understand the combat immediately. It took me 6-7 hours to understand it, but I loved it once I did. You reread all tutorials in the game if you want to know something.
-All characters level at the same rate, so you could just use 3 characters for the whole game and still have everyone be the same level. I used Shulk, Sharla, and Reyn for 75% of the game, and it didn't get stale.
-Side quests, Gems, and affinity stuff is mostly optional. If you don't want to worry about them, then don't.
-Update your armor at least every thirty minutes. It's fun.
-Explore
-Stop asking questions and find out stuff for yourself.

Missable quests will have clocks next to them on the quest screen with the notable exception of the Frontier Village quest line. It involves basically everyone in that village, is complicated as hell, but it all has to be done before confronting the villain.

You guys convinced me. Ran out to Gamestop, got it "pre-owned," but it's practically brand-new, and less than $50. Pulled from the pocket dimension inside that one drawer to the right of the cashier that seems to somehow contain copies of every game ever.

I borrowed it from a friend and found it extremely boring. To each his or her own I guess.

I did some research and watched some videos before buying. I think I'll like this. :-)

And thanks to everyone for their tips. I've read all of them so far and continue to do so.

Here we go...

I'm starting to get sick with all this Xenoblade talk. Can we just please return to discuss Ridley in Smash? Thank you kindly.

It was so thoughtful of Sakurai to mimic Ridley's appearance with Metal Face in the Shulk trailer. Now we can be absolutely sure he's just a stage boss.

PotD tonight will be "I present to you, Stage Boss: Ridley. Suck a dick, Ridley's not playable, and never will be. So stop asking me.

But do you see that in the background, now who could that be?"

Actually, my biggest tip is to be INCREDIBLY careful when using wikis/forums as it's easy to stumble across spoilers :s

Any party combination will work. A lot of people fall into the trap of thinking Sharla is necessary but as others point out, she's not really, especially if you get the chain attack healing talents.
I DO recommend having a tank though as it makes it a little less chaotic. Reyn works fine as a traditional tank and you'll gain someone later who works amazingly well as an agility tank (they don't take hits better than anyone else but they've got the aggro tools and their evasion can get you through a lot of encounters without even needing any healing at all) :3

Yeah I mean it's weird. I watched others play it and it looked great... like a single player MMO. I just couldn't plod through it with the cheesy plot, terrible voice acting, and monotonous gameplay.

We don't know anything about Duck Hunt's play style yet. For all we know, it's possible that you control a reticle, with a dog following along and a duck flying overhead. Duck Hunt is the only FPS in Smash Bros., and since Sakurai is big on personifying game mechanics, it's plausible we'll see something like that. In such a case, the "Duck Hunt Dog" name wouldn't accurately reflect the character as it omits the other two entities. A hunt is comprised of the hunter and the hunted, which is exactly what this hypothetical character would be representing.
I'm sorry, your argument is very well thought out, but there is still no way in which Duck Hunt makes sense. If you're controlling the reticle then you're playing as the Hunter. Simple as that. A hunt is not a physical entity and it's not a collection of physical entities (like Ice Climbers or Wonderful 101). It's an activity. Activities are not capable of performing activities. Therefor, there is no way that a hunt could win a fight, which makes the phrase "The winner is... Duck Hunt" nonsensical. If the winner is Duck Hunt, who is the winner? If the point of a duck hunt is for the hunter to win against the duck then how can both entities win as a unit? And what did the winner win at? Hunting or fighting?

No matter how you spin it, Duck Hunt simply doesn't make sense, but like I said, I'll get used to it if that what's they go with.

Again, it is a weird name at first glance, but I think it's too early to complain about it.
Nobody's complaining about it

A great use of $50. If your PC is strong enough to handle it I'd recommend playing it on Dolphin. I mean - GOD DAMN *-*

EDIT: Bonus pic:
LOL this is an emulator you dumb game :/
Nothing I press makes this screen disappear :/

While I liked Melia and actively played as her for most of the game (where possible) you can't really have her in your party if you're not the one controlling her because the AI flat out doesn't know how to play her :P

Then again, It's rare for me to find any game where the friendly AI doesn't end up feeling like a burden to me somewhere along the journey (dear Xenoblade characters, please stop standing in the acid pools during that boss fight, for the love of heck)

Hey, more Melia fans! *high five*

Man, I really want to play Xenoblade, but my Wii got busted, I've yet to see a copy in all local Gamestops, and shipping to PR is a hassle some times and expensive. My only option at this point is way for the N3DS port, but I'm worried about it since the footage was super rough.

And those Dolphin shots really make me sad that they didn't do a Wii U port.

If you're controlling the reticle then you're playing as the Hunter. Simple as that.
The hunter would be the main playable entity, but the dog and duck would also have their own attacks/assists, and they'd be focal to the essence of the character. Even though you technically only control Rosalina, the character is called "Rosalina & Luma" because the Luma is central to her play style. The same applies to "Pikmin & Olimar." Duck Hunt is the same idea, only "Dog & Duck & Hunter" is too longwinded.

Assuming this character was designed as a playable abstraction of the Duck Hunt game as a whole, then I really can't think of a name that's both applicable to the concept and sensible. "Duck Hunt" doesn't describe a sentient being, but "Duck Hunt Dog" ignores potentially two-thirds of the character.

Hopefully the Wii U will have Xenoblade characters as trophies so they all can receive a bit of a facelift and we can see how their faces should look.

This looks amazing, now I want to play Xenoblade but I won't be able to fit it in my schedule until 2015 ;_;

I'm impressed, how the hell this poor little Wii pull environments like these. How.

...Shulk looks nothing like Shulk though.

From what we've seen of Xenoblade X's face models, why do you think they'd look better? SD wasn't a limitation, it was a shield - protecting us from the true horror of liquid Monolith eyes.

I've got a copy I borrowed from a friend forever ago that neither of us have finished...

I'm kinda tempted to try it again, but I also feel like I might as well wait for the n3DS version, especially if it's going to add anything.

Riki and Dunban look like they'll probably be direct rips from the game. Or have slightly smoother geometry.

I'm kinda sad that Brawl's and SSB4's trophies aren't mostly original like Melee's, but the former 2 contain a lot more.

I'm quite fond of the faces in Xenoblade. XBX on the other hand looks more stereotypical anime.
