Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

I know, but the nature of the Duck Hunt character (the way I'm imagining it, anyway) doesn't really lend itself to a name of any kind. There's no way to succinctly entitle a character comprised of three disparate entities, so they might as well just go with a name that everyone will recognize, regardless of whether or not it makes sense mechanically.
I would go the Olimar route and go with whatever the main entity is. In the leak, the Dog is the only one in the character select icon, unlike Rosalina and Luma. The Dog is also probably going to be the one with the majority of attacks and animations in general. It pretty clear that the dog is the central character.

You're probably right, but I'm just playing devil's advocate and trying to make sense of the name they actually went with. The other tandem characters are fortunate enough to have established names (Ice Climbers, Pikmin & Olimar, and Rosalina & Luma), so this is sort of uncharted territory. Without knowing anything about the character's implementation I probably would've gone with Hunting Dog or Dog & Duck myself, but I'm hoping "Duck Hunt" will make more sense in the wake of gameplay footage.

You guys convinced me. Ran out to Gamestop, got it "pre-owned," but it's practically brand-new, and less than $50. Pulled from the pocket dimension inside that one drawer to the right of the cashier that seems to somehow contain copies of every game ever.

Why wouldn't you wait for the superior 3DS version. Playing this game without a sleep mode is killer, its why I quit. Will get 3DS version day one.

I saw someone wearing your avatar as a shirt today. A McDonald's employee, lol.

Also, the reason that picture makes me cry is because the actual model for DHD is so fugly.

Yeah, the bipedal version in a lot of fanart is ugly as hell. Official design looks good.

The game already allows for fast travel, clock manipulation and unrestricted saving / loading. Would a sleep mode really make it all that much more convenient?

This most likely means nothing, but its worth noting that every row on the CSS of the 3DS version has 9 slots just like the character bar at the bottom of the website currently. There's room on the 3DS CSS for exactly 5 more characters, creating 6 rows of 9 on both the CSS and the website.

54 characters? Send in the clones.

There's this assumption they'll fill the space, but couldn't it be possible that space is there for the purpose of allowing one to randomly throw their selection stone like in previous Smash titles?

He'll probably laugh in a taunt or something, but I'm glad that doesn't dominate every aspect of his character design.

Honestly, I'd have rather a Pit style upgrade. Just re-imagine completely... But not to look like a stoner ass dog like he does now.

I'm sure a professionally done version of the bipedal version can not be... well for lack of better word creepy, like the brawl model hack.

There's a random button on the CSS for that, though.

Regardless, it could end up as merely empty space in the end. The CSS can look any way that Sakurai wants it to, it doesn't have to be completely even and clean looking. Just like how the main selection menu has its own aesthetic problems (like how out of place the Challenges button looked compared to the other buttons).

oh you are crazy.. She is unique and awesome to use.
A cool character, but she's pretty painful to use in battle. Her damage output is pitiful and she's gimped by absurdly long cooldowns on most of her abilities. I could count on one hand the number of circumstances that she's actually preferable to almost any other party member in the game, especially the likes of Dunban and Seven. I'd include Melia here if the AI were any good at using her.

Random button doesn't do the same thing... I thought we went over this.

Randomly throwing the selection stone shows you who you'll play as before the match. The random button doesn't show you who you'll play as until the match has begun.

There could also be a space for DLC characters.

Believe

I think we can all be thankful that Sakurai isn't a George Lucas case and doesn't own the characters or the franchise.

Nintendo obviously sees these Smash releases as a big payday, since they will be the first big titles to make use of Amiibo's and all. If they see profit potential in DLC, Sakurai's feelings about DLC won't really matter.

Considering how long it takes to get into the game, yes.

Sleep mode makes all the difference to me. If a game is on 3DS or Vita, I get it over consoles version everytime.

Eh, would seem a little silly to have both but if that's what it ends up being used for then I guess that's cool.

Whatever happens, I just hope that people don't suddenly get massively disappointed when the final roster is what we saw this past week and a half. Lower your expectations and you're likely to be less disappointed in the long run. And by that I mean, you should be going into the Japanese release thinking the final roster is what we already know it as right now.

Plus when you have low expectations the surprise factor is greater. :P

Agreed entirely. Though I used Melia as my main tank.:) Stack damage reduction orbs on her with heavy armor, and she does well. Best AoE tank, too.

To make Sharla moderately useful, you need to abuse the bonus attack feature. That lets you spam her better abilities with long cooldowns.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't DLC. I just hope you can buy it for both versions without having to pay twice.

A 3 pack setup could work well enough - one for 3DS stages, one for Wii U stages, and one for characters, which could be transferred between versions.

Characters don't have to be paid DLC. Of course it's not the best plan business-wise, but it's arguably the most fair for players.

Why would it be silly when they had both in Brawl. They both provide different functionality. After all, isn't it good to have options?

That true, but the profit from paid DLC would be the best incentive for Nintendo to actually go through with it it.

Smash is a big, popular series, and it will undoubtedly be another 5-7 years until the next one. DLC and the Amiibos will be excuses to clone gold.

Couple of smash website oddities:

-none of the characters revealed during E3 2013 link to a related-game website despite all of them having at least one semi-recent release they could promote (well, except Mega Man...)
-Dedede's japanese page links to the Triple Deluxe website, but the US page has no link presumably because Triple Deluxe was still a few months away from a US release when Dedede was revealed
-Conversely, Yoshi's japanese page has no link for presumably the same reason while the US page links to the Yoshi's New Island website
-Rosalina and Peach both link to the 3D World website on the US site, but for some reason on the Japanese site they link to two different 3D World pages
-Additionally, Peach is the only revealed character so far to have a link retroactively added to her page. Why this hasn't been done for US Dedede or Japanese Yoshi page I have no idea
-Strangely, Meta Knight's japanese page links to the Return to Dreamland site, but his US page has no link despite there being a US RTDL site. Thought this was odd since there are Wii games being promoted on the smash site that are several years older than RTDL like Other M or Punch Out Wii
-All Fire Emblem characters on the US site link to the Awakening site, but the japanese pages for Marth and Ike link to japanese sites for Shadow Dragon and Radiant Dawn, respectively
-Pac-Man, Captain Falcon and the Mii Fighters are the only character pages added post-E3 2013 to have no external links in any language.

And just for fun, here are my predictions for what the rest of the roster will link to:

Ganondorf: Hyrule Warriors most likely, if not then definitely OOT3D
Ness: Earthbound Wii U VC page is more than a generic VC info page so this seems likely
Dr Mario: There doesn't appear to be a real website for even Dr Luigi, so likely nothing.
Dark Pit: Kid Icarus Uprising
Bowser Jr: Probably NSMBU, if not Mario Party 3DS
Duck Hunt: Likely nothing... unless his reveal comes with news of a Duck Hunt remake!
Falco: Star Fox 64 3D
ROB: Likely nothing...unless.....nah
G&W: Likely nothing, maaaaybe Game & Wario or the Club Nintendo G&W ball thing
Wario: Game & Wario
Jiggs: Pokemon website like the rest of the 'mons

Hope you all enjoy this thoroughly useless information.
