Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Mario's great as a baseline character to play to understand how everyone else in the game is going to end up working. He was my main dude in Melee for a while but otherwise I don't think he ever got much play amongst my friends.

I might try to change that this time around, though if Doc has Mario Tornado instead of Fludd it's gonna be him instead.

Mario Tornado basically turned into his move from Galaxy so he really should have it.

We have disagreed quite a few times today. lol

Hmm, so it actually has a deeper meaning huh. I dunno, I still don't really like it. Like, I can't imagine any other good icon for Pikmin (aside from a Pikmin itself I guess?) but it's still pretty generic to me. I can see any other icons and recall "Ohh, it's this series!" but I can't do the same with the Pikmin one. I have the same problem with Megaman's icon.
But unlike the random gear, the flower symbol is a very common symbol in the Pikmin series. There's even an actual flower breed named after Pikmin that looks like that. It's like complaining that the Mario icon is just a generic mushroom.

I don't know what my first match is going to be.

I'm planning in playing as Mario against Sonic, Megaman and Pacman CPUs in Battlefield OR

Playing as my main from one version (Pit/Shulk) against the other one from the other version (Shulk/Pit).

But in the end the flower looks to me like any random flower. Like I said before, I imagine Daisy when I see just a flower like that used as an icon.

And Mario icon is in not generic in any way. Compare this:

to this:

But eh, it's probably just me.

Is there an RSS feed available somewhere for the Pic of the Day? I know there's the Smash Bros Miiverse site etc. but I'd like something that I can plop in my RSS feed and I could also scroll through and catch up on quickly.

I just realized that i'll be getting the game at midnight but none of my friends will be up that hour.
Not sure if I want to do a CPU battler as my first. Might just go into traning until i can play online.

I'm surprised that Mario is not getting much playtime to most of you in Smash. Mario is pretty much one of the best characters to use. Not only is his accessibility easy, but he also packs good amount of power while being agile, as well as nifty specials, especially when you master the use of the cape. I like using Mario against Fox/Falco and timing that cape when they're trying to recover.

It's so weird. Even now, all this time later, I feel they nailed EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of Mega Man's presentation except for his series icon. Like, a gear/Metal Blade? Really? Why not his helmet, or the little angled swoosh in the Rockman and Mega Man 9/10 logos?

It's just... a gear. That could be, like, any robot. Meh. Oh well, at least they nailed literally everything else!

EDIT: Except his lack of a voice, but they were going for a literal representation of his NES appearance, so I can overlook that. He didn't really get his voice until Mega Man 8, so that might have modernized him a bit too much for what they were going for.

Anyone got any specific colors they want this time around? Not like an alt costume, just a regular color.

For me, I'd finally like to see Black and White Yoshi incorporated into the series. Why the heck have they not been added yet? If every character gets 8 colors there's... only one color left for Yoshi, so I think only Black has a realistic chance. Of course they'll probably pick purple...

I'd like Donkey Kong's Yeti costume modified so it has a blue tie and represents Super Kong.

Diddy needs a Super Kong color, making his fur white and his hat/shirt blue. Modify his previous Blue costume.

I want Samus' Gravity alt to be more purple and in line with the actual Gravity Suit. It doesn't need to be Samus' Blue Team skin anymore, so make it the proper color!

Charizard and Lucario need their Shiny colors. Jiggypuff, Pikachu and Greninja all have their's. Mewtwo, Ivysaur and Squirtle had their's. Why are Lucario and Charizard the odd Pokemon out? Especially since Shiny Charizard is so cool looking.

Meta Knight needs a Dark Meta Knight costume. Maybe normal map the scar in. Or just the colors would be enough.

Pikachu needs his party hat back as one of his costumes. Same for Jiggly and her bow. With the 8 costume thing, Pikachu is a big winner, he only had 4 colors in Brawl, the minimum required for the game to function and every one of them was for team battles!

Somehow I missed this screenshot, so when I saw it I took some liberties.

Ashley is granting Sakurai to hell.

he's just too uninteresting for my tastes.
He falls into the same reason why I won't use Ryu and Ken in SF.

Totally, that Mario Cape is a ton of fun.

Yeah, it's pretty lame. Still, if they're going to fuck up one thing, not a bad choice!

Mario is actually my third-best character in Brawl and I enjoy using him quite a bit! I'm just surprised he placed this high in terms of the overall vote because he doesn't seem that popular.

I think we can excuse the lack of voice when he uses NES-accurate sound effects for everything. Clearly they were going for a very, very specific Mega Man and they just nailed it entirely.

It would be weird if he was talkative, and the robot sounds combined with his large, emotive face communicate things really well (much like Toon Link).

Yeah, that's exactly why I can overlook his lack of a voice. I do wish he had it because his Astro Boy-esque kid voice is part of what makes him who he is, but like you said, they were going for a very specific representation and they nailed it with the sound effects.

That flower design is incredibly iconic to Pikmin, and I actually think it's one of the better icons in the game. It's simple, but it also immediately calls Pikmin to mind (for me, anyway).

I'm in the process of looking for a house, and one of the things I want to do is have a garden.

omg, I didn't know the Pikmin were based on a real flower. And it's easy to care for. And I will totally have a garden of pink and white flowers. Wow, I'm super stoked.

Edit: Wait nevermind, they cost like 10 dollars a pot. I'm not paying 10 dollars a pot for ground cover lol.

If we are talking about what we think we'll do first in Smash:

I have to try out Little Mac, and I have to continue playing with him until I decide once and for all whether he'll click with me and be my best character (seems so intriguing), or just some mediocre character who can't recover. Recovery may be a huge factor in this game for Little Mac because it seems like a lot of characters have amazing recovery moves.

When characters have one aspect about them that feel really good and dominant (like the Knee of Justice for Falcon), it really makes me want to play well with that character because landing those dominant hits or combos feel so satisfying.

Is anyone else intrigued by Little Mac? Or does he seem like a flop?

Not sure what you're talking about with the Gravity Suit. It matches the Metroid Prime color scheme for the suit pretty closely.

But let's be honest, this is the Samus color scheme were all want to see.

Mario isn't that boring. I like when he makes those "Whoohoo!" and "Yipee!" sounds. Guy's having the time of his life in every Mario game, no matter how dire the situation is.

The sound effects definitely increase the amount of enjoyment I get out of jumping in any Mario, for sure.

I'm not really bothered by the lack of voice because he was only voiced in 1 game as far as I can remember (MM8). Like you said, it's much better that they nailed every Megaman-esque sound effects, from when he falls to the ground, when he dies/falls off, his charged buster sound, to the Robot Master attacks.

I still have zero ideas why Sakurai thought that FLUDD was a good idea in the first place, and why did he feel the need to bring it back when Mario's spinning is a more known move by now (thanks to Galaxy, the NEW games and 3D World). And if Doc actually has his own FLUDD and not Mario Tornado, I might actually go livid regarding the roster.

I play Mario first, not because he's a character I enjoy using (not bad not great just okay) but because I play everyone in a new smash game in order starting with Mario and working my way in order

Phazon_suit_transparent.png

Ah yea, I forgot about the Phazon Suit.

I just figured since most of Samus' colors take cues from Super Metroid, that the gravity suit should be more purple like it is in Super. Although looking at it, it seems to be more purple than I remember it being.

The only alt colour that I need to see is Karate Puff.
That was the worst thing about Brawl in my opinion, the fact that they cut Karate Puff from the roster.
I mean, they gave us Sunhat Puff but if Sakurai leaves out Karate Puff again blood will be shed.
BLOOD WILL BE SHED!

So we have what 10 pics of the day until release? He didnt reveal all of the chars until after release in both brawl and melee right? Still I feel like we could get some good stuff this week.

Hopefully we get music tonight though.

If the Melee Intro was shown today, with no context, with Melee coming out in 2 weeks, and without us knowing the roster, people would swear up and down that Ridley, Goroh and Wolf were playable in Melee because of their role in the video. Like there'd probably be pages of arguments about how the video absolutely proves without a doubt Ridley, Wolf and Goroh are in, and must be secret. Just look, Ganondorf is in the intro! We know he's unlockable, Ridley, Goroh and Wolf must be too!

He did not. For Brawl he showed 2 secret characters before release (Sonic and Snake). If the roster on the eShop is the starting roster, he will have already shown us 1 unlockable (Lucina).

So I don't know, it could go either way

I actually enjoyed the Sleep Hat one...since it was also a nod to Kirby...But yeah, Bandanna puff is best puff.
