Or she's actually a good female character in the Mario series that isn't a hollow princess or a random female version of some male character. We see her a lot because she's interesting and popular.

For years, Mario's "best" reoccurring female characters were Peach, Daisy, Birdo (?), and Toadette. Daisy is an empty character, Birdo isn't even technically a girl. And Toadette is just a pink Toad with hair.

In which years was Toadette considered a legit character? I never saw her as having much of any specificity as an individual.

(Birdo is a great transgender character.)

Nah, go for it. You don't even have to watch the backstory stuff to finish the game.

It's more of exposition for Rosalina than anything. You can complete the game without watching any of the Storybook scenes.

awesome, thanks

Just as a devil's advocate for jon bones to consider, I think the backstory storybook stuff actually really adds a lot to the playthrough of SMG and is superb as part of the overall experience of the game. It's not essential in terms of gameplay, by any means; just wanted to offer a differing opinion for jon to consider. Just FWIW. BTW, jon, no access to a Wii or Wii U? SMG port is by no means guaranteed and it's an incredible game.

yeah, no more access to my old roommate's Wii. really wish i had played the series when i had the chance :/

assuming wii / wii u bc i'll pick up the wii 3 ds unified system when that comes out. if not, i'll get a wii u and all the games i want (so many....)

maybe i'll have some rugrats by then and i'll be able to play nintendo with the fam like i did when i was a kid.

You're in for a real treat, Pikmin 3 is an incredible game. :)
I hope so! I'm picking up Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, and either Tropical Freeze or 3D world whenever I do buy a Wii U, and I've heard good things about all of them.

Pick one, anyone!

If Daisy were to get a newcomer trailer I imagine it would play out like this. It starts with the scene introducing Peach in the Melee opening and cuts to Daisy sitting in a chair with a glass of Chuckola Cola. Then Wario's introduction in Brawl which then cuts to Daisy's face slowly twisting with rage. Finally you get to Rosalina's reveal in smash 4 which cuts to Daisy breaking the glass in her hand. It cuts back to the Rosalina reveal on Rainbow Road. Suddenly you hear a whizzing. All the characters look around and then up. Above them is a blue shell which instantly comes crashing down and explodes. As the smoke fades you hear kart tires screeching to a stop. Camera pans to reveal Daisy getting out of a Kart. Then the splash screen "Hey, it's Daisy."

I miss when Petey was in everything :(

It was nice having a mindless monster as a character. It was different, and petey's proportions were so different from everyone else, it made for some good variety in games where four of the characters wear suspenders and hats.

Whoa, I didn't even realize he was in SMS and didn't just debut in SMG. I really did not play much of SMS....

I really like Petey Piranha, though. He's hilarious, and very cute and endearing. Kind of like a giant Baby Bowser.

Toadette appeared in Thousand Years Door right after her debut. She was mostly a tutorial character, but I remember her dialogue having personality, rather than just being generic exposition. She has only gone downhill from there though.

Eh, I'd argue that taking cues from fan fiction isn't the best way to go but Nintendo really doesn't like to nail even the most trivial details about the Mario universe if they don't have to. The Koopalings aren't related to Bowser anymore? Alright. Wario and Waluigi may or may not be brothers despite being evil versions of Mario and Luigi who are brothers? OK.

If the New Super Mario Bros. franchise didn't exist I wouldn't be surprised if they decided that Mario and Luigi may or may not be related, who knows!

Someone hasn't played Yoshi's New Island, Nintendo's all about alternate timelines now!

So does anyone here think this might be the last "classic" Smash Bros. game?

Sakurai and Iwata did discuss that the reason they initially decided to put Smash on the 3DS is because they did all they could do on consoles. Sakurai also said it "isn't enough" to just add 50+ characters to call it a day.

I have a feeling they'll try and mix up the formula big time for the next installment five years down the line. As of now adding new characters to the roster leads to diminishing returns as nearly every important Nintendo character is essentially represented. All that's left is adding retro characters, adding tertiary characters from big franchises from Mario and Zelda, and hoping a new, successful IP is developed so they can be added to the next installment.

This is why I think you are a fan of obscure, less popular characters DLC or expansions like the Street Fighter series heavily trades in is a good idea. A new installment doesn't guarantee your favorite character of the previous game will even show up and I can't see Nintendo continually adding to this Jenga tower of roster. It becomes too much as some point.

Yes she is.

Just in case people think Smash Wii U is delayed to 2015. Its still listed as a Holiday game.

I'm really excited for Captain Toad, but let's be honest here: if that's all Nintendo had lined up for the holidays, they'd be pretty well screwed. They know this; which is why I'm certain getting Smash Wii U (and Amiibo for that matter) out in time for black Friday is priority one for them.

True, I guess I should have elaborated. It won't kill the game by any means, but it may add a nice little side quest to it.

Oh, yeah, it's definitely on the periphery. It just really added to my experience of the game. :)

Sweet. It'll be well worth the wait!

You're going to need both TF and 3DW!

Well, Toadette managed to get in Paper Mario: TTYD

Toadette appeared in Thousand Years Door right after her debut. She was mostly a tutorial character, but I remember her dialogue having personality, rather than just being generic exposition. She has only gone downhill from there though.

Weird, I only vaguely remember her in there. I need to replay that game. She hasn't gotten much exciting to do since then....

How early are games usually released at mom and pop stores in Japan? We just saw it with Hyrule Warriors, it always happens with Pokemon, etc.

I get the feeling someone will have their hands on the final game within a week.

If you think about it, quite a lot of the newcomers for Smash 4 weren't around or relevant when Brawl came out. Characters like Greninja, Shulk, Robin, Lucina didn't exist at all, Mii, Wii Fit Trainer and Rosalina are not much older than Brawl, and Little Mac/Palutena weren't relevant back then. A lot can happen in terms of characters until the next installment.

Regarding new modes and features, they'll figure something out. They always do.

The thing with Petey is every enemy in Mario spinoffs seems to
1. Be directly associated with Bowser
2. Be an intelligent species with human traits
3. Have relatively "human" like proportions

Petey is neither of those. He's savage and dumb, and can't really talk. He's not usually directly controlled or loyal to Bowser. His body is tiny and his head is massive, compared to nearly every other enemy in the game that appear in spin offs (Koopa, Lakitu, Paratroopa, Shy Guy, even Boo) so he brings an entirely different shape to the roster. His body makes certain activities awkward and comical, like catching a baseball with his mouth and then spitting it back up to throw it.

It's too bad he was so unpopular they removed him as a playable character in Spin Offs. He was different and interesting to me, which is too bad he's now regulated to background appearances or the occasional RPG mid-late game boss.

If "Summer" for Nintendo is September and October, then Holiday for them must be February and March.
Nintendo won't allow Sakurai to delay Smash U to 2015, too much is riding on this game (not only the survival of the Wii U, but also the fact that this game is gonna jump-start the Amiibo platform).

I'm not saying that, I just say that I enjoy the story in Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games A LOT, it wouldn't be that hard to put just a little bit of that in the platformers. Mario Sunshine had a little bit, but it diminished more and more each time since then.

I think we won't get any Wii U release date until Smash 3DS is released worldwide, and they are holding it tight (won't get leaked for now). And I'm still pretty sure it'll be a late November or early December game. Just my hunch.

While I don't believe it'll be delayed, Brawl was a 2007 title until October, so once we're halfway through October without a delay, I'll rest easier

Well sonic is in. It isn't like sakurai will have to squeeze in snake at the last second either.

Yeah that's definitely a good reason as to why it absolutely needs to hit this year.
Whatever doesn't make it can be DLC so they can get more money anyway down the line.

Also, kinda disappointed that Xenoblade Chronicles X isn't even a 1st half 2015 title considering it was initially due for a 2014 release

Hey SmashGAF! For those in the US hope you all are enjoying the long weekend, and for those not, hope you're having a good day in general.

Can't believe Smash is so close, after 14 (soon 15) months of Smash thread.
Memories, memories...

Oh man. That was such an exciting day. I literally shed a tear of joy watching that trailer.

It's been a long ride, not nearly as long a ride for Brawl, but pretty long indeed.
