Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

I'm sure not 100% of the participants will make it.

Rather than defaulting the win, maybe people who didn't make it in originally can sub in for them?

I dunno, i'm not making the rules, but it's all in good fun, so I don't see why not.

It would be cool to have some reserve slots, in case some of the people originaly in can't participate!

I'd love one of those slots, though I'm not sure my internet will be good enough to play it decently.

I would bet my bottom dollar that if Black Shadow was introduced and had taken Ganondorfs clone moveset, conversely giving him a brand new one with swords and magic.

Then he would be the one clone character hardly anyone would ever bitch about.

Yep!

And she doesn't look dead inside anymore.

First time she's ever been in a different pose for her art, too.

Yup, i'm sorry. :c I was just thinking on more of.. What if two people want to use Wendy? There's only one of her, and the other wouldn't get the chance. Then with the tournament strictly being no males. D:
If it's online, two people can use Wendy. It was like this for other alt colors in Brawl.
EDIT: Misread, but my point still stands lol.

Also, a question about that tournament. That rule stating "No Custom Movesets" allowed... does that apply to Palutena as well? Her whole gimmick revolves around her custom moves, I think she should be an exception.

Smash has cut characters before, but it has never dropped an entire series. Just realized that that not only will this be the first Smash to do that, it's cutting two of them.

Fucking yuck.

At least Ice Climbers will still get content. I doubt we'll get ANY Metal Gear related content. :/

Metal Gear is unfortunate, but I don't think we can expect 3rd party reps to always stick around (though when they're Pac-Man and Sonic, I can see Nintendo making a best effort to).

Ice Climbers sucks but uh... polar bear!

Fucking yuck.

Just about Everyone on the Cobra Unit is how we feel about that.

The Pain of losing characters.
The fear of them not returning.
The fury that we can't play as them.
The sorrow that they will be forgotten.
And the end of their life in smash.

Ugh. Gross.

But don't worry. We have Dr. Mario.

But....is anyone more hopeful about DLC after the MK8 announcement? That's more DLC than I ever thought they'd announce for MK8, and it kinda blew away my DLC expectations for that game. Because of that, I'm expecting more from the DLC for this game, even though it hasn't even been announced at ALL yet, lol. Help me keep my expectations in check, guys....

Yup, these are the worst cuts (I think) that the series has seen. Mewtwo hurt, and Roy was kind of a bummer, but this round of cuts is terrible for me.

Specifically: Snake, Lucas, Wolf, and Ice Climbers. Ivysaur and Squirtle are sad too but I can see why most people wouldn't be upset because of the abundance of Pokemon (not that I agree).

Fun fact: the most prolific in-house series introduced since Brawl's planning period is... Rhythm Heaven. The GBA Rhythm Tengoku was released in 2006, the arcade version in 2007, Rhythm Heaven in 2008, and Rhythm Heaven Fever in 2011. I'd be kind of surprised if all it got was a Smash Run enemy. At the very least it should get an Assist Trophy.

;_;

I'm still holding out hope. I'll know in 10.5 days if it's true or not.

Man, most of the character renders for Brawl do not hold a candle to the new ones.

In fact, after twenty hours with Brawl over the last week, I feel it starting to show its age in terms of its overall design and UI. Wii U looks much nicer, cleaner, and pops more.

The Chorus Men thing from Gematsu was such a "I didn't even know I wanted it" idea for a playable character, too. :(

At least let us have some music!

Oh wow, WiiRevolution1 is probably going to demolish me. But I'll give my best shot.

BTW, what does the Reggie meme "no johns" mean in your tourney post?
Actually it is you who will demolish me.
Especially if I still don't have proper internet by October 29th ._.

Nah seriously, I intend to practice but I'm not really good at Smash games. Who will you be playing as? I shall be Lucina!

Had the game just cut Snake, Ivysaur and Squirtle, I think it probably would have been ok.
Had the game just cut them, plus Lucas and Wolf, people would have been upset, but it wouldn't be that bad
Cutting all of them, AND Ice Climbers just feels... bad. I think most people will find issue with the roster having these holes in them.

Brawl just cut a bunch of clones and Mewtwo. Roy was sort of popular, and Mewtwo was bad to lose, but overall the cuts were fair. We had a new Fire Emblem rep to mess around with and Lucario seemed like a decent enough replacement for Mewtwo.
Cuts this time really seem more deep and have more of an impact. Lucas is the only sort of clone cut, the rest are losing whole new move sets. And two series. With no real replacements to latch on to.

But Snake's a clone.

I love how much they reworked some of the vets, like Bowser.

Back in the day my mind was racing at what that meant for Ganondorf.

Nope, Palutena actually have her vanilla moveset. I'm pretty sure of that because you can pick Palutena during online with random players.

I love this picture.
I hate how snake for some reason is always the easiest character to cut in a lot of people books. Regardless on your stance of Nintendo history or anything else. No character has a playstyle similar that alone is a huge blow.

Yeah it fucking sucks. All I can hope for now is DLC.

I still reckon if we have the final 3DS roster then we'll at least get Chorus Kids as DLC or in the Wii U version and patched back into the 3DS version. I can see Sal's source getting Chrom mixed up with Lucina/Robin, but I can't see them getting an entire franchise that's getting next to nothing instead wrong.

Feel the same way about the Ice Climbers.

Seriously
Lookit dem gums.

Still found it weird they made Bowser cartoonier, yet he'll still get saddled with the generic monster sounds.

Just to post again, and get everyone in on the info of my tournament. :)

  12. Villager (female only)
  13. Wii Fit Trainer (female only)
  14. Zelda
  15. Zero Suit Samus

Too bad he doesn't have his normal voice and still sounds like godzilla.

I love Godzilla though.

Artistically speaking, Brawl was a FUCKING mess.

1. Spear Pillar - BORING AND DARK
2. New Pork City - BORING AND DARK AND STUPID
3. PictoChat - Cool stage IMO, but plain as FUCK
4. Port Town Aero Dive - Relatively miserable when compared to Mute City and Big Blue
5. Final Destination - Looking back, it's the least visually-interesting FD ever.
6. Luigi's Mansion - Visually appropriate, but not appropriate when every stage feels so dang drab
7. Mushroomy Kingdom - Vomit
8. Bridge of Eldin - Too serious, too realistic
9. Norfair - Dark and inactive
10. Battleship Halberd - Dark and uninviting
11. Lylat Cruise - Dark (Melee proved you can do a cool Star Fox stage without being dark)
12. Castle Siege - Realistic and generic
13. WarioWare - A dark, featureless elevator, except for unfun and unbalanced mini-games (seriously, whose idea was it to have a situation where one person could get a Super Mushroom for winning, and the other could get a Starman? That literally punishes the larger character!)
14. SSE's colour and themes so often rely on dark and miserable and meh
15. Pretty much all of the characters were changed to be more "turbo realistic" and "dark"

Grumble grumble

On the subject of cuts, unlike Brawl, this is something that we kind of have to wait and see on.

1. If Lucas, Wolf, Mewtwo, Ice Climbers, Squirtle, and Ivysaur return through DLC, then best Smash roster ever, with literally no arguments to be made to the contrary.
2. If free, then Sakurai is a hero.

Since he can actually do DLC now (and while I would forgive him if he didn't do newcomer DLC he REALLY needs to do veteran DLC), we should be patient. Hell, one of the biggest benefits for the lot of them being DLC is that they won't have to be rushed. Ivysaur can get her moveset fixed up, Ice Climber can be optimized to work as a tandem (or given a cool new moveset to make up for it), and Mewtwo can be made from the ground-up without having time cause the moveset to turn to poop again.

EDIT: This is how you fix the WarioWare stage

Microgame mode. Instead of having this silly gimmick stage define Wario absolutely, one of the Special Smash modes would be a mode that adds Microgame-like goals to each stage at certain intervals. A stage's background for example could be replaced with a WarioWare Microgame.

You know what that is? FUN

Because it's an option, not an imposition! I can play my Wario stage and have it reflect Wario way better than the last one did, and when I feel like it, I can do silly microgame shenanigans with friends!

I agree. Plus it even makes it kinda worse because I feel like Wolf and Lucas wouldn't have taken that much to bring back. Everyone likes to tout clones as easy roster boosters (which they kind of are and I'm not a clone hater), but honestly I think the vets that take the most time to bring back are the ones who get major overhauls in looks, movesets, or both. I don't think Lucas or Wolf really needed either. They seem to me like they'd be low-effort vets.

I understand Snake, Ivysaur, and Squirtle. Hell, I even understand Ice Climbers even though I think it's outrageous that a solution couldn't be found. But Lucas and Wolf are just... unnecessary cuts. Ice Climbers are too, but I do get it.

Oh, and no Mewtwo. I would've even accepted a Lucario clone for him (ironic given how everyone thinks Lucario stole Mewtwo's moveset).

I'm not disappointed with the newcomers at all. I've said it before, this is the best batch of newcomers (IMO) ever for a Smash Bros. title. Not in terms of star power but in terms of playstyles and repping new franchises and games. But the overall roster is definitely marred by the cuts if you ask me*.

*Disclaimer: Still hype as shit for this game.

I thought Snake was cool but in a gimmick/throwaway character kind of way. He doesn't really jive with the other characters imo(playstyle-wise, artstyle-wise, theme-wise) so him being cut isn't a big deal to me because I never played him. I almost feel like the series would be more pure without him, if that makes sense. That said I thought he was a great fit for Brawl in the same way Mewtwo was a great fit for Melee.

Uhhh...over half of those are true to the source material. Not really sure how Lylat Cruise was "dark," either.

and Mushroomy Kingdom and WarioWare were effing brilliant.

Muhroomy Kingdom would have made a cool SSE stage, but as a fighting stage, it's complete shit.
