Hehe, more than anything - reading the reviews and seeing the insane playtime length is what's scaring me. I'll probably pick it up tomorrow afternoon though seeing as I'm pretty burnt out on Diablo 3 right now.

If you turn out to like SMTIV, good luck waiting for the sequel as that won't come out until 2082.

Has this been posted, yet? :-D

I admitted to not playing the series because of what I saw in let's plays, but I have watched a good 10 hours or so of Giant Bomb's endurance run of P4 (including the ending as I mentioned). I have a pretty good idea of what the game is and isn't like.

Seven years will have past since the last full on release when P5 hits, it isn't unfathomable to expect a series to change in tone after that amount of time has past. Especially considering the same audience who played those games are now significantly older. And given what I saw in the teaser trailer, it does look changed.

With that being said, I'm not writing the series off because of what the games were like in the past, all I'm doing is projecting my hopes for this series and JRPG's in general for the future.
You saw 10 hours including the ending of Giant Bombs 155 episode endurance run? Well I mean sure, you must have a pretty good understanding of the game now.

It's funny you bring up the length of time since Persona 4 and 5. You know how many years there were between Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and Persona 3? 6. The series has only gotten lighter in tone since then. It didnt seem like Atlus really thought of their aging demographic back then. What does the teaser trailer tell you exactly about what has changed? What I see is a boy going to school with cuts to various news headlines of disturbing goings on. Let's look back to Persona 4s intro, a boy heading off to a new town while dreaming of a woman being assaulted and murdered. Or Persona 3, of a boy heading off to his dorm with cuts to a girl struggling with what appears to be her killing herself. It doesn't really seem like things have changed much based off that. But yknow, I guess we will see next year.

Well for one, the protagonist appears to be older than Persona 3 or 4's, the quick and violent cuts to the headlines, the eery ringing sounds emanating in the background and growing louder with each passing moment. It doesn't exactly paint a rosy picture.

That and seeing what Atlus did with Catherine gives me hope that they would continue and expand in that direction given that was their last big title.

That's just generally how the anime cutscenes look. Actually from the video he's apparently a second year in high school(Same as persona 4 protagonist). And how is Persona 3's starting movie where someone looks like they're about to kill themselves rosier?

He's probably either the same age or a year older.

Really? He looks significantly older to me, like a university student.

o. O

is this thread going to get scary? I still don't know what persona is, or what type of game it is, I skipped through multiple parts of the giant bomb play through, looks like an animal cartoon

No. That's why there are bans in place. Now if you go visit the Persona community..........................................

No, hence the ban warning if people start being creepy.

I don't know

That and in the teaser you could see a 2 above the symbol on his uniform, which probably means he's a second year.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind an older protag, but it doesn't look like that's the case.

I noticed the 2. Didn't expect it to mean 2nd year but that would be interesting if it is. I wonder if we'll go through more than one year.

Also, refer to the picture I posted before that shows the insignia and the wording that states Something High School

You've literally just described things that happen in Persona 3 and 4.

It will be cool to see a newly grad Persona main character that is starting a new job and has to deal with work stuff/Persona stuff.

Well P3 and P4 have been both second years probably cause it's the easiest to deal with. You can have older and younger classmates so it makes it easier to write.

Ah, I actually didn't notice that it said High school. Well that pretty much settles it.

He's not older. Quick and violent cuts to news headlines? You've seen P4 and P3s intros right? They pull the same quick cuts, except yknow, someone is being murdered and another is seemingly trying to kill herself.

Catherine was specifically built for people in their 20s. Persona has always been about high schoolers. This is looking to be no different.

Well then my problem with Persona 3 and 4 is lack of consistency in tone. Granted, it's natural in a 70+ hour game to have moments of levity to break up the monotony.

But that's not what I'm talking about. One moment you have the incredibly unsettling scenes like mentioned above and the next you have a giant panda mascot parading across the screen.

That'd be great.

Now that I think of it the in game characters will probably look a lot closer to the cartoon animated ones. Thats going to be weird.

Also you never know, they might even have proper in game cutscenes with actual animation and lip syncing.

Why would that be weird? It looked amazing in Catherine from a art/technical standpoint.

I believe Hashino actually confirmed that the game is once again about high school. It's one of the fundamentals of Persona to him, so that probably won't change.

Not actually a fan of Teddy personally. How much have you looked into Persona 3? It really seems like you'd actually like that game's tone more than 4's, from what your complaints are.

I assure you Persona 5 will be no different. The contrast between levity and seriousness is no less than a defining trait of the modern Persona games.

You've only watched 10 hours of a game but you speak as if you know the tone is inconsistent?

Your issue is with a magic bear while one of the games you appreciate a serious tone in stars a stripperiffic bunny girl and a princess wearing the shortest skirt in the world?

I'm sorry if people who have played the games come off as oppressive here but seriously, broaden your horizons and try this stuff out.

You constantly see LTTP threads where people hate anime and generally don't like the same stuff that you're talking about. Tone 'inconsistencies' and all, they come to love the game. That's why you see a 50 page thread currently for a recently niche series.

The reason why cheesy bits in games work is because they make you feel good. Being able to relate back to high school and do some of the stuff in the game made I'm sure a lot of us feel good. It's a video game and doesn't have to be realistic when it isn't.

Preferences are fine, but going out of your way to try new stuff is great sometimes. Thank goodness I did and played Persona 3 and Persona 4.
