Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Bottom line is we can't assume the leak images were on the same save and we already have evidence they are from different time periods.

It is interesting he focused so much on the lock though.

So what if the ESRB is from "multiple stages" of the game? It doesn't mean the roster is finalized still. Hell, the fact that the ESRB version still is "ufninished" regardless means there could be more.

If anything, it being an ESRB pic means there's more to it to go from since ESRB rarely if it ever gets a finished product.

Unfinished could mean stuff like the Barbara trophy missing all of it's text, not full characters missing.

Isn't this method actually more repetitive than Brawl? Since obviously the characters debuts stay the same so the order is always constant, whereas in Brawl, the series were in order, but the characters in the series were random (ie one round in Brawl you could face Mario, Luigi, Peach, then Bowser in the Mario section, then the next, you could fight Luigi, Bowser, Peach, then Mario. In Smash 4 it would just be the same every time, provide you have all of the characters unlocked).

Not sure though.
The size of the group you fight could be random (fluxating between 1 to 6 I guess?) as well as the order you fight them in. Still has the potential to be more random than always knowing you're reaching the Mario/Zelda/DK/Pokemon/Kirby/etc. portion of All-Star mode in Brawl.

Only bad thing about Melee's implementation was it always ended in the Mr. G&W fight.

We don't know whether that picture of the lock was taken before or after the roster image.

Amazing so Sakurai put the ball back in our court.

Now we have to somehow deduce whether or not the early image was tied or not tied to the leaked CSS?

So if I follow logic... ah screw it I already got Bowser Jr.

COME TO ME WONDER RED! SAKURAI VISITED PLATINUM GAMES!!!!!

It was already assumed that the lock icon there meant All Star wasn't playable yet because not all characters were unlocked. This was never in question. It turned out to be less than accurate, but the implication for characters is the same as ever: in that screenshot, not all were unlocked. No change there tonight.

It does not mean more characters. The ESRB video seems to be a compilation video, rather than one continuous capture. In the trophy screenshots, one shows the player having 11 trophies, while the others show the player having unlocked 600-some trophies. We don't know that there's any real connection between the screen with the all star lock and the CSS we saw. I feel like there's no reason the ESRB would be shown an almost complete roster.

Read up ESRB. They never get complete version of the games they rate. They only look for the raunchiest stuff in games.

Unfinished could mean stuff like the Barbara trophy missing all of it's text, not full characters missing.
It goes in all ways.

I still feel we know the entire roster, but I'd love a surprise on the level of the Robin reveal. Bring it on, Sakurai.

I say this pretty much constantly but nobody really listens

Maybe, but why would nintendo send a build of the game for a rating that was missing such huge chunks of content? I don't know how much detail the ESRB goes into when rating games, but I figure they'd at least wanna see all the characters and stages before rating it.

This *is* Sakurai.

Multiple characters might be pushing it, but aft Kid Icarus:Uprising, I've fully expected some sort of out-of-left-field amazing content we didn't know was coming and didn't even know we wanted.

This is a man who knows how to build hype after the fucking ESRB leaks the contents of his game.

This fucking man. This fucking man.

Because even if the initial test build is missing characters, Nintendo can send a completed ( or even just slightly more completed) version.

Think of it as getting a rating a little bit at a time as the game becomes more complete so that you don't have to wait until the last minute and get it all rated at once.

Pic of the day. This time, you can challenge every fighter in All-Star Mode from the moment you turn on the game!! This is a survival battle with limited recovery items and no option to continue. However, this mode will be incomplete until you've unlocked every fighter... Until then, you can only play against characters that are already available. This is a picture of the bottom-screen menu, with a padlock indicating that the mode is still incomplete.

yoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I guess because there's the possibility that the leaked All star screen with the lock came from the same save file/universe as the css that everyone had resigned to being complete.

I mean, it doesn't prove anything. Not even close. But it's nice to have even a slight possibility of mystery back rather than leak absolutists taking the fun out of speculating.

Here's to hoping this means 5 more characters

I want to tell myself "don't get your hopes up dude"

but I know I'm going to get my hopes up. I NEED THE CLIMBERS AND LUCAS AND WOLF TO BE SAFE AND OK

All you people focusing on possible logical explanations make me sick. SmashGAF is about the hype! Forget that logic crap!

Agreed! Smash hype only comes around once in a console generation!

Im feelin red characters, wonder red, knuckles, robotnik, snake's red alt...

Ahhh yisss

This is actually pretty major!

All-Star Mode available from the start is a massive game-changer. Who woulda thunk it?

I'm really appreciating the changes he's made. The "chronological series" approach in Brawl was one of those nice ideas that felt a bit lacking in the execution. Bowser Jr. and Rosalina belong in 2002 and 2007, not 1981! Cross-series groupings mean that the number of characters in each fight, and the associated difficulty level, can be made more consistent. I just noticed that the recovery items aren't just heart containers any more either!

Are all third-party guests officially on the starting roster this time? Lucina might be the only "revealed secret", then. But yeah, I'm still betting that the shots in the leak were taken at different times, so no more extra characters.

I'd buy that for something like ZSS's alt costume or trophy text, but I have no doubt all the characters have been nearly complete for a long time now.
Oh yes. It's happening.

If one person tells me lower my expectations while I'm having fun with this...
Lower your expectations.

Ya'know, even if we do know the full roster it's fine. I like it the way it is, but the possibility of there being more?

Curiosity of the unknown!

1. Sakurai made a point to focus on the lock here

2. There is empty space in the CSS

3. Shulk is randomly down with the third party characters when there's room to move him up

4. Ice Climber and Rhythm Heaven both have Smash Run enemies yet apparently no playable characters

5. The clones are sectioned off at the end of the roster rather than with their respective series (though I can see this staying in the final roster)

All this together makes me almost 100% sure there are more unlocks to be seen :D

Do developers show every single thing in the game to ESRB before they ship it?
They show what the ESRB needs to see to rate the game I.e. the most questionable content. That's why a lot of the images were close ups on female trophies.

It's not really logic though, it's just an assumption.

This PotD could mean nothing, but it could also mean a whole lot. There's not enough evidence either way, hence the discussion, and why this is potentially a pretty big sign.

The clone section and Shulk alone had me believing there were still more characters. I'd say we have at least a couple more under wraps.

Also this is a good post from /v/

They're not meaning to show all characters in ESRB, since if they do, there seem to be no image of Mii Fighters.

I'm with you on the bold. It's nice to want things, and I would be beyond elated if we actually have 5 more surprise characters in the roster.

I just really don't think we do. :(

I don't think that's necessarily true. Sakurai is a man who will work on things down to the last minute. If there were characters not quite ready in June/July but the ESRB was all "send us some stuff," I think he'd just show em what was ready and work really hard to finish what wasn't.

It could be characters. Doesn't mean it was/is, just that it's feasible.
