Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Pic of the day. This time, you can challenge every fighter in All-Star Mode from the moment you turn on the game!! This is a survival battle with limited recovery items and no option to continue. However, this mode will be incomplete until you've unlocked every fighter... Until then, you can only play against characters that are already available. This is a picture of the bottom-screen menu, with a padlock indicating that the mode is still incomplete.

yoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

i'm generally sceptical on assuming sakurai deliberately messes with us with the PotD... but this seems rather deliberate, lol. not getting my hopes up, but this does seem like a response to the leak in some small way, and leaving the doors open for further speculation.

on the one hand, the timing and wording are both remarkably convenient

on the other hand, it's still pretty likely that they've just got a queue of them and it's just a fantastic coincidence

Cross posting from the other thread since I think it's something to think about:

The fact that the character select screen does not fit the usual Sakurai OCD is a more telling that there are characters left to unlock than this to me =P

For those who don't remember :

Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr Mario and Maybe Bowser JR and Game & Watch (maaaaybe even Ness since now he is the only representative of his NES franchise) are in very bizarre places considering how every full unlocked roster was on past games

Here's something to think about in terms of OCD...

If you move Duck Hunt and ROB to the next row and move the clones to the bottom...that row (starting with Ness but then would be starting with Duck Hunt) consists entirely of franchises with single character representation (assuming Lucas is cut). Not only that, but the characters would be in order of their first appearance (by year). Sakurai is making a big deal about year of first appearance in general this time. I think it makes sense for this row to follow this pattern. Two more reps in the row that currently has Duck Hunt and ROB would push them down. For speculation's sake let's say it's Wolf and Mewtwo--who would fit perfectly. That new row of single reps would also have room for more, like potentially Ice Climbers.

I LOVE this PotD. Sakurai has returned the gift of pointless speculation to SmashGAF that the leak took away :3

Still preparing for what we've seen to be the final roster, but at least we have something new to talk about!

If you want to argue first appearance by year how does one explain the character placement of Captain Falcon?
Er, you're right that Ness didn't show up until Earthbound/Mother 2 which was after Captain Falcon showed up in F-Zero. However, the original Mother came out in 1989...before F-Zero in 1990. I said first character appearance but I meant first franchise appearance. My theory holds.

Well if you want to get technical... The first Mother/Earthbound game came out in 1989.

I saw this message and other people's hypes.

I think it might be best to keep thinking that leaked roster to be final numbers at launch. I would hate to see people being disappointing if it does ended up that way.

It could be good news or not. Sakurai love to playing with his fanbase. It's like a cat playing with mouse before cat eat the mouse.

Pretty much how I'm approaching it. Besides, we have no idea if the all star pmode picture the leaker took was taken before or after the one showing the roster. It might have been taken before, but he decided to post it after posting the one with the leaked roster.

I foresee a lot of people ending up disappointed because of this.

Still, it's an amazing PoTD. IMO, It's the most "Sakurai KNOWS" picture we had until now lol.

I wonder how this game will progress since patches are a possible thing now. Would tourney just play on vanilla games? Or just shift with the patches?

Wolf and Mewtwo push DHD and R.O.B into fifth row, in turn pushing Lucina into the sixth row; Chorus Men and Ice Climber push Dr. Mario and Dark Pit into bottom left corner of sixth row, squaring out the overall roster.

And what does your theory say about Mr Game and Watch?

So apparently someone found a way to reduce landing Lag in the E3 demo:
http://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/2f8b3q/apparently_someone_found_a_way_to_get_out_of/

Hope it's true!

D1 says otherwise.

If a move ends early, or auto cancels on landing...then it has virtually no lag. You can't cancel landing lag of attacks with any button.

https://twitter.com/xD1x/status/506717134584811520

The above was what people did in Brawl and isn't new (and you can do it in Smash 64/Melee too)

There's a common misconception regarding landing lag cancels in Smash 4, it's impossible. You can cancel landing lag on airdodges w/ zair.

https://twitter.com/xD1x/status/506716852828274689

The above is new but all it does is bypass the air dodge landing lag for characters with tethers. If you air dodge and then press the A button during the air dodge you'll perform a Zair and since the Zair has no landing lag when you land with it you bypass the 20 frames of landing lag from the air dodge. This will only be useful for ZSS, TL, Link, and Samus (assuming they haven't fixed it in the current dev build, which is totally possible for them to fix by now).

But how would Shulk and Doctor Mario fit in your theory? Doctor Mario wouldn't be ordered by his first appearance and Shulk would still be on third party row, right?

For my theory, here are the dates:

Duck Hunt - 1984
ROB - 1985
Mother - 1989
F-Zero - 1990
Animal Crossing - 2001 (April)
Pikmin - 2001 (October)
Wii Fit - 2007

That would create a row of 7. If you move the clones to the bottom row, that's two rows of 7 on the bottom, with two empty spaces on either side. The row could also be potentially bigger than the bottom row with 8 or 9 spaces...Ice Climbers can easily fit in this row,

I would totally do the same were it not for ice climbers. I need them in my game, so I have to hope for their appearance.

You're right, it really going to be sad if we are losing Ice Climbers.
After 2 games anyone would think they would be in Smash forever.

Wolf and Mewtwo push DHD and R.O.B into fifth row, in turn pushing Lucina into the sixth row; Chorus Men and Ice Climber push Dr. Mario and Dark Pit into bottom left corner of sixth row, squaring out the overall roster.

Correct, this is actually how I think it is going to shake out.

And what does your theory say about Mr Game and Watch?

Both him and Little Mac are kind of randomly placed. I don't really have an explanation other than there not being a better place to put them/they needed to fill rows somehow that otherwise would split up franchises. Maybe they aren't on that row with the other single reps because their franchises weren't home console debuts. Just spitballing.

But how would Shulk and Doctor Mario fit in your theory? Doctor Mario wouldn't be ordered by his first appearance and Shulk would still be on third party row, right?

In terms of those 3 clones I just think they stay together rather than with their own franchise. Dr. Mario could fit on top instead of Game and Watch, but there's no way both Lucina and Dark Pit fit on that row without drastically splitting everything up. Shulk is placed on the bottom kind of randomly, similar to Game and Watch and Little Mac. I don't have a real explanation for him. My theory is really just about that second to last row (which would have implications for some other things).

Would people trade the 3DS version for Ice Climbers?

That's tough, but I think I would, that's how important they are to me.

I honestly plan on dropping smash 3DS like it's hot once the wii U one comes out.

I *MAY* still play it in bed to get all the challenges, and maybe play online (if it's done well), right before I fall asleep, but, I can live without it.

I'll definitely play it on the go, with friends/family, but that won't be often.

As a fellow Ice Climbers fan, my advice is to expect them to be cut. If you expect them to be cut you won't be as disappointed if they are removed.

Except for i'll still be sad that they're gone, and not smugly self-satisfied :p

I would trade the 3DS version for its stages remade in beautiful HD. Just imagine the Reset Bomb forest on the Wii U! Instead we get that UGLY Palutena Palace.

Shame the new 3DS isn't out already or even out in the US.

Rumor is that new 3DS is going to be region free, how great would that have been for smash? I wonder if eshop will be region free or just the cartridge games :/

Yes.

3DS is a stopgap until the real Smash 4 releases and it cutting anything from Wii U (like the Ice Climbers) means I wish it didn't exist.

Hardly a stop gap considering the install base of 3DS compared to Wii U.

The game will make a lot more money from 3DS sales than Wii U, and i doubt the game would have had the budget its got if it wasn't for that ROI from 3DS.

Wait, really?

I hope so. I'd definitely import one, as to not wait until 2015. Though I'd probably still wait for English Smash

Wow on the timing of this update. Last night, after weeks of trying, My friend and I finally beat All-Star co-op in intense with no continues.

3DS version is for people who actually leave the house.
3DS version is for the awkward people who play videogames instead of interacting with other humans when they're forced to leave the house :P

Wii U is for people who want to play Smash with their friends without forcing them to buy 3DSs.

I'm skeptical aboutthe PoftD

I'd rather believe that we've seen the final roster and not be let down by it rather than getting hyped about it and getting fucked

RUMOR!!! An Alien told me that there is a possibility, that the "NEW #Nintendo #3DS" won't have #RegionLocking & Big NNiD changes incomming

Unless I missed something and it's been shown that he's a lying liar.

Really gets my hopes up, I'd DEFINITELY buy a 'new 3ds' if it's region free.

Right now, i'm on the 'wait until there's an exclusive game I NEED to have' boat, but if it's region free it'll be 'wait until there's a really need special edition XL system I want' boat (only the normal/non XL new 3DS let you change faceplates). I'll ULTRA buy it if it supports japanese eshop, as well. I'll MEGA ULTRA buy it if it adds super nintendo virtual console support (A link to the past! That's like 10+ zelda games all on one console).

Would have been nice for smash, but alas.

Would people trade the 3DS version for Ice Climbers?

This would mean trading at least
-One full mode (Smash Run)
-All 3DS-stages
-3D
-Smash on the train
-Smash at conventions
-Snake Smash on a plane
-Smash while Poo'ing at work
-Smash on vacation, when you're waiting for your Girlfriend to get ready
-Smash while playing Smash on Wii U
etc.
for just one character.

Definitely no.

Really? HahA

Smash for 3DS is, for me, something to play on my commute to / from work, to play in my gfs house, on my lunch time and of course play from home.
