Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

For online I really hope you can 'invite' friends to play. You shouldn't both have to sit in an 'online waiting room' and wait, though I know that will be true :/

Are there any 3DS games that allow you to invite to play? What about Wii U? I haven't played anything other than MH3U online, which has an 'online mode' that you both have to be in, and THEN you can invite.

I also hope smash has communities so I can click a 'join community game' and it'll only pair me w/ gaf members or something like that.

Yeah, it's still good... I'm trying to just figure out the 'worst NINTENDO DLC' All nintendo DLC has been good or great so far.
Mario Kart 7 has community lobbies, does it not? I don't see why we can't have communities in Smash, but we probably won't get them. Should we get them though... Would be a good day.

My feeling every time I rewatch the Shulk reveal, especially after playing Xenoblade Chronicles:

But Toon Link is Lucina levels of clone, besides being smaller.

So the criteria is
- You have to be really cloney, but not appear in Brawl

That's entirely arbitrary...

What!? Toon link is NOT lucina levels of clone... Lucina has identical animations, even her taunts. Her only difference is that her sword does damage evenly throughout, not just more at the tip.

Toon link and link are as similar as Fox and Falco. Some of their A moves are even entirely different, like toon link's back air. As someone who mained both of the links, I can tell you that it's WAY more different than melee levels of clone (like mario/dr mario). Almost all of the animations are different, all of their abilities have entirely different properties, they just 'look' similar, but they play entirely differently.

And i'm not saying i'm right, it's just an Idea. They were either added late in development, or they're 'alternate costumes' with some minor property changes (like sword doing damage evenly).

The clone corner of shame still makes me laugh and perplexes me

I don't even understand the criteria one has to have to be in the corner of shame.

You can't say it's for clones because Toon Link, Falco and Ganondorf are clones and not there.

Ok, so maybe it's for new clones! But... no, that's not it. Doc isn't a new clone.

Ok, maybe it's for super cloniest of the clones, like Pichu levels of clone... except Toon Link is with his series and Doc will be as different from Mario with a different down special and down aerial

Also with Doc down there, Game and Watch just chills with the Mario characters all alone and awkwardly separates Mario from Donkey Kong.

The clone corner makes more sense in a 7x7 grid, where there isn't enough room for all the series to fit cleanly without someone spilling over a line, but... the grid isn't.
Your statements hinge on the assumption that Dr. Mario will have any different moves from regular Mario, which is just that--an assumption. Do not be surprised if Dr. Mario's moveset is literally just Mario's but altered, no retention of his Dr. Tornado and original Down Aerial at all.

But even still--Toon Link is still further removed from the Melee-Styled clones than he's given credit for. The most new attack animations any of the Melee-styled clones had was around 1 to 2. Toon Link has a unique Neutral Air, Forward Air, Back Air, and a few unique throws. He doesn't belong with characters like Dr. Mario and Lucina (and Dark Pit, probably).

Was Pikmin's DLC even that awesome?
Pikmin's DLC was cheap enough to offset the relatively low "awesome" factor, though the second set was pretty fantastic.
Excuse me?
Pikmin 3's original two packs of DLC (for $1.99 each) could be considered lazy with five remade Mission Mode levels and five remade Story Mode maps, but the third one ($4.99) had five all new maps spread out across ten missions. Twenty new missions total, for the cost of $8.97, compared to the sixteen missions that came with the base game (six of which were boss battles taken from the Story Mode). It tripled the number Collect Treasure/Battle Enemies missions for less than one sixth of the original game's price. It's a really great deal for a really great game.
It wasn't Day 1 DLC either, clearly the game was finished before they started work on the DLC, which is the best way to do DLC.

Being late in development didn't make Sonic destroy the CSS of Brawl. Melee added clones perfectly to the CSS.

The characters couldn't have been added that late in development, so much so they couldn't even adjust the CSS, because both Lucina and Dark Pit appear in trailers. Certainly not much later in development than Melee's clones or Sonic.

And even without the clones, the CSS doesn't line up right. We could shift everyone back 3 spots, it still leaves Mii and the random button without a spot. So somewhere they had to modify the CSS enough that they could have re-ordered everyone.

Time to finally begin preparing for the...

Super Smash(not so Summer!)Bash!

The SSSB was the first planned Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS tournament, scheduled to occur a week after launch as a "for fun" tournament where new players, experienced players alike can get together and enjoy casual Smash tournament gameplay with fellow NeoGAF members without having to succumb to the original plain tournament rules of banned stages and whatnot. This tournament is designed to be nothing but fun, so everything will be vastly different from what tournaments you're normally used to.

It's time to tip the scales?!

This Smash tournament will play with different rules than most Smash tournaments, and they are as follows:

  • Six minute, three stocks for matches
  • Eight minutes, 4 stocks for Semi and Grand Final matches
  • Single Elimination progression - Best of ONE!
  • Items will be on medium for all matches except Semi and Grand finals (FS will be on too!) - Items and FS are OFF in Semi/Grands
  • Players will be matched with timezones where possible to kickstart this ASAP
  • Will begin Monday 13th October and will last until the Sunday

What will be included?

The sole purpose of this tournament is of course, to enjoy Smash and everything it has to offer. As it is not a hardcore, to the bones tournament, the following will apply:

  • All stages will be available, the purpose is to fully enjoy what Smash has to offer - Choose your own stages, or even agree with your opponent!
  • In the Semi/Grand finals, stages will be Final Destination, all variations are available
  • All characters will be available, though I ask you do NOT change your pick and to stick with them the whole tournament!
  • As said, players will try and be matched with timezones where possible to easily kickstart the tournament
  • There will be opportunity for a 3rd winner (runner-up!) in addition to your normal runner up

I decided I won't take registration yet as it is too early and most likely many will drop out, shall update this closer to release.

Will send out PM's with your first match and date when brackets are all ready to go! :)

Doctor fludd would so absurdly lazy lol. I refuse to think he'll go that far........hopefully.

None of Lucina's moves are different than Marth's, so I expect the same will be true for the Doc. And depending on the circumstances under which he got on the roster, it may not be a matter of laziness: maybe he was thrown in at the last minute just because they had a littlegood extra time to pad the roster out.

Yeah, I agree, but at least for lucina, it makes sense canonically. Dr mario with fludd does not make sense at all. Dark pit I could go either-or, but I doubt sakurai would give him the upper dash arm or guardian orbitars since he never used them in-game. It's POSSIBLE, since dark pit can use anything in multiplayer, so he could very well be a fast pit or a slow/strong pit, depending on how he wants to do it.

Mario already has a tornado animation. It's just as simple as adding a down aerial, an animation that exists in Melee, so no need to even think of a new one.

I can't even imagine Fludd fitting on Doc. The straps don't work over a coat.

It can't take too much time to give him doctor tornado and his melee down air. D:

So this is the last thread before release (in Japan). I'm very curious as to what the next thread title will be!
Nope. give this thread about 4 more days :p

I'd imagine giving Dr.Mario his all down B wouldn't difficult given that Mario still has it as his down air. Also, there his no way in hell he doesn't get the pills as his neutral B.

Also, we already know that Dark Pit is going to utilize the Dark Pit staff in some way, shape, or form so it seems like they're still willing to change up the clones.

lol yeah I feel like I wouldn't appreciate it nearly as much if I didn't finish the game. I actually beat Xenoblade the day Shulk was officially revealed. That reveal video is a really awesome tribute to the game.

You can't just say all that and not post the list for reference. I have no idea what lists I'm on. But if I'm not on it, put me on it.

I'm crazy about all stages or the low time+high stock combo. But it'll be fun anyway! And I guess with items stocks will go down quicker anyway.

Some clarifications:
How are stages decided? Completely random?
Are matches best of one?
You say items are not on low for semis and grands, I assume they'll be totally off? Or on medium? Will FSes also be turned up/off for finals?

Props by the way for getting something going. I still think it's way too early for it to really help, but I like to see that things are already in motion.

Considering this is probably the last thread before release, will there be an import OT for the Japanese release that we all move to? Or will that be considered the spoiler thread while main discussion continues in an early "Western release OT?"

Also, oh man we're having a tournament? How exciting!

Smash needs a mode or rules option where Final Smashes are meter-based. I like the way they're implemented normally, but sometimes the chase is tiresome. Plus they could be part of No Items play that way.

Sorry, I'm in the process of receiving TB's list to post for reference sake.

Stages can be chosen, matches are best of one, item's are totally off for Semi's, and FS's will be off in finals.

I'll update the post as I go.
