Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Clones are an easy way of adding more characters especially if they were just going to be alts at one time. It doesn't take away from anything else

Well shit, this means Sakurai cut the only black rep in Smash Bros.

Olimar lost his best alt! D:

I hope Alph at least gets it.

And Lucina isn't? I noticed people complaining about Dark Pit and/or Dr. Mario, but not Lucina are just full of hypocrites.

This, Lucina looks to be the cloniest clone in the entire series. Outside of her mask taunt what have we seen that really makes her different from Marth at all? Making damage even across the blade is something 90% of people who play this game will never notice/know about.

Every clone in Melee had something different either visually from a gameplay perspective to make them feel different from a casual perspective (pills, fire arrows, slower gun that stuns, self damaging joke character, exploding fire blade, and drastically slower but more powerful). The Brawl clones were even more diverse

I hope Lucina has something, ANYTHING more then her mask taunt because if that's her big claim to fame it'll be a disappointing addition, and I like Lucina as a character. Would it have been so hard to make either her up b or side b aether just to give her at least one different move?

Do we think alts will be unlockable (ZSS, potential Koopalings, etc.) or available by default with the character?

Also, will online matches allow for you to play against characters you haven't unlocked yet?

Don't judge a character until you see the gameplay.

That's not going to change everyone's mind on who the character is, though. Not everyone learns to like characters based on how they fight, y'know. I could end up using Dark Pit and loving his moveset, but I'll still hardly care for him as a character.

I hate to bust your bubble but
that's just a tinted helmet.

Holy shit, I never actually realized that the rest of the tint changed. I thought you were just joking, but then I looked up another picture on Hyrule Temple and you're right. Kinda makes more sense than Olimar being the only character to change his race in an alt, though.

Nobody complains about Lucina because people here cream their pants any time a game gets female representation of any kind ever since the industry became more about making a political statement than having fun playing games.

Dark Pit has badaas theme music.

"This narrative medium should maybe be a little less hostile to half of humanity" shouldn't be a controversial statement. The existence of representation can make a game more enjoyable, for the simple fact that it makes people feel less ostracised.

...And Pittoo's theme is pretty great.

Guys, my gay friend botty mentioned that more characters were leaked?? Is this true? I've been so busy with the hit new 3DS game Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for the past few days that I haven't kept up with Smash

Dark Pit's actually an inversion of the typical evil double trope, though. While the point is to make you think he's just going to be "Pit but evul" they deconstruct that almost immediately.

It's hardly Oscarworthy storytelling, but it's more interesting than you're making it out to be.

Like Meta-Knight.

And Dedede.

And pretty much any other "villain" Sakurai has created that haven't been reserved purely for boss status besides Hades. And hell even some of those bosses still went that route, like Dyna-Blade.

Dark Pit was a solid character in KI:U, but they all were. Comparing him to the rest of the cast and to Nintendo characters in general, he's really not that special. In the end, he's still Pit, but he's a lil darker. Omg.

Game ROCKS. First Layton game. Huge AA fan. Loving it.

Totally. All of the KI:U have unexpected complexities to them.

Yes to your second. Just like Brawl.

No I think its fair enough to do so.
We aren't playing blank slates here. If you don't like the character in his game or the design the gameplay will only do so much.

That's not going to change everyone's mind on who the character is, though. Not everyone learns to like characters based on how they fight, y'know. I could end up using Dark Pit and loving his moveset, but I'll still hardly care for him as a character.

You might not like him, but you might learn to respect his inclusion. That's how I come to terms with many characters.

Also if the announce ends up calling Dark Pit "Pittoo" (please be an easter egg of some sort) then his inclusion would be more than justified.

Well, I don't mind to have unique dialogues between Pit & Dark Pit, Pit & Palutena or Dark Pit & Palutena at Victory Screen like Wolf, Falco and Fox did.

Lol this guy.

I was thinking how KI:U featured some really interesting criticisms of religion and god... Like, Paletuena is a real callous bitch some of the time.

The Gods are capricious sorts, you know? That's always a fascinating aspect of mythological fiction. Same thing happens in Zelda games that depict Jabu Jabu, the Dragons, etc. It's much more interesting to me than modern religion.

I actually don't mind the concept of it, but I wish we had gotten Dark Samus as a character instead of Dark Pit.

With Doc it just annoys me that he's not an alt costume. His character is literally based on his costume. Just turn the pills into fireballs and we're good.
There's already a Dark Samus alt costume don't see any reason to go beyond that.

But Dark Samus would be the coolest Metroid rep ever. And Metal Sonic or Shadow would certainly make a lot of people very happy.

A "Dark" version of a character can be interesting if they have the character development Dark Pit does.
Let's keep Shadow The Hedgehog 1000 miles away from Smash, please, or from anything, to be honest.

I watched a Let's Play of KI:U I don't really remember Dark Pit being particularly interesting other than helping you at certain points. Besides, Smash isn't a game with any important story; so his character wouldn't really come across as anything unique.

Yes to your second. Just like Brawl.

Oh, interesting. I wonder if they wouldn't be concerned about that spoiling people on unlockables, but I guess that's not a big concern for Nintendo with the Wii U game hitting later with the same roster. What about being able to play online on stages you haven't unlocked, though?

sakurai is going to buff dark pit to SSS tier and make his win quote "buy kid icarus uprising for nintendo 3ds in stores now ps fuck metroid prime" because he's biased like that

Like Meta-Knight.

And Dedede.
You know, I never realized that haha. I guess all of the Kirby characters are basically the same, but emphasize different parts of Kirby's character.

Totally. All of the KI:U have unexpected complexities to them.
... Except Medusa :P

I was thinking how KI:U featured some really interesting criticisms of religion and god... Like, Paletuena is a real callous bitch some of the time.
Yeah, and government and morality too! I like how they just sort of brought it up, and never really bothered to address it. It didn't make it too serious, just called your attention to it.

Let's bring back Roy!
You'll get your wish, now that we know each character gets 8 costumes!

I'm decently annoyed with all three of 'em, honestly. I was excited for Lucina in Smash, but the moment I saw her replicate Marth's idle animation, I was done. She's a 1:1 clone with nothing but unique mechanics to make her an individual. I'm kinda just fed up with Smash clones in general I guess.

I don't mind clones since I always preferred clones version over original characters such as Dr. Mario, Ganondorf and Roy in Melee.

Don't judge a character until you see the gameplay.

This. This.

Woah it's up y'all

8 alt colors for everyone

zlCfzSZrv4w9Hxp6kh

"Pic of the day. Until now, you were only able to choose from four, or sometimes five or six colors for each character. This time, though, all characters have eight colors to choose from! The first four color schemes for Samus are based off her Varia Suit, Fusion Suit, Gravity Suit from Super Metroid, and the Dark Suit."

zlCfzSZrv_c3LVV6jP

"…And here she is in the color schemes of the Gravity Suit from Metroid Prime, Green Samus (a regular in the Smash series), the Light Suit, and Dark Samus. A total of eight colors."

The Dark Samus alt is fucking solid.

You might not like him, but you might learn to respect his inclusion. That's how I come to terms with many characters.

Let me just say I've come to not mind the inclusion. But I'm just speaking for how I know others will feel. Very few came to like snake even after playing him.

There's already a Dark Samus alt costume don't see any reason to go beyond that.
I know (and I think it looks great and I'm happy with it!). I just think, based on the assist trophy and what I remember of the two characters in their games, that I'd prefer if Dark Samus were playable and Dark Pit was just a color allusion. Though it would be a little silly to see three different characters side by side with Samus in their names.

I watched a Let's Play of KI:U I don't really remember Dark Pit being particularly interesting other than helping you at certain points. Besides, Smash isn't a game with any important story; so his character wouldn't really come across as anything unique.

To be fair, watching an LP isn't the same experience as playing a game and the affinity you develop for characters when playing alongside them and against them is different than the passive experience of watching an LP. You're right that Smash, esp. this one as far as we know, is not big on story per se, but given the plethora of additional background information we can expect from trophies and the like, you still can develop an appreciation for characters you're not familiar with and get a good sense of them. I see no concrete evidence at this point that Dark Pit won't have his own unique moveset, given all of the different kinds of weapons available in KI:U.

A great reference to Uprising would the announcer calling DP "Pitoo" and DP breaking the fourth wall and bitching the narrator out for it.
That'd be funny, but not if it happens at the character select screen. I'd get so sick of it after a little while.
wat
If anything this is how most people came to like Snake. Dude had a very fun playstyle.
Hey you're not banned. Welcome back.

Wonder if they had time (or knowledge) to fit Cosplay Pikachu into there...then again Smash Pikachu is male and doesn't have the special tail marking Cosplay one has.

Well the Pokémon universe is not afraid to dress guys up in women's clothing.

Quick question for anyone who may know from watching a ton of footage / or research:

Does it appear that the AI actually battle between themselves more often than Brawl (I have played no other games in the series)? I recall that in Brawl they would have a hard-on for the player character and hunt them down, regardless if a closer CPU player was nearby.

Of course I plan to spend most of the time in multiplayer, but for those travel/no wi-fi situations it would be appreciated.

That'd be funny, but not if it happens at the character select screen. I'd get so sick of it after a little while.

Hey you're not banned. Welcome back.

Thanks. And I agree, it'd get annoying after a while.
Maybe have it so that it happens only once out of so many times, or maybe only if Pit is selected by someone else.

Oh, interesting. I wonder if they wouldn't be concerned about that spoiling people on unlockables, but I guess that's not a big concern for Nintendo with the Wii U game hitting later with the same roster.

I don't see why they would really care at that point. What's the difference between fighting someone online who happens to be playing a character you haven't seen yet, and playing single-player and suddenly having to fight a character you haven't seen yet?

A great reference to Uprising would the announcer calling DP "Pitoo" and DP breaking the fourth wall and bitching the narrator out for it.
I was thinking of something like that, but with the victory screen so that you don't need to hear him bitching every time you accidentally select him. Like maybe his name is displayed as "Pittoo" and he starts celebrating for a second only to get furious at the screen, and then just stands there sulking while everyone applauds him haha.
