Alright folks, I received my monitor yesterday. I have a single 780ti/intel 4770k system and was a little worried this monitor would be too much for my system to run games smoothly.
TL;DR: Everything runs great. My old monitor and system was like putting a corvette engine in a ford pinto. It ran fast, but looked like shit. For me, this monitor changes everything.
Initial impressions:
This thing is huge. I'm coming from a 1080p, 60Hz, 22 in monitor and I was super excited when I set this thing down next to my old monitor and saw how much bigger it is.
The build quality is great. Sleek design and so easy to navigate the OSD. No dead pixels or other issues.
It was easy to set everthing up. I had been reading everything about the monitor so I knew to download the driver off of ASUS website and enable G-Sync (it was already on).
My first game to load up was Battlefield 4. It took awhile to get the settings to lock in game. I had set the refresh rate to 144 hz and it wouldn't take. I restarted and things were fine. My initial impressions were off a bit because of this. I have noticed this a lot in the impression threads. I think it takes a restart or a little tinkering to get the games to "work" in g-sync. This is due more to the game, than the monitor though.
The screen looks great. I am glad I've never had an IPS to compare it to, because it looks amazing. The resolution and "feel" of 144 hz is really nice. g-sync works great.
The only quirk I've seen is with a few games(RAGE, STALKER) where the mouse ends up on the extended desktop. I am running my old monitor on the hdmi port of the 780ti and it works fine otherwise.
Tested games(all with v-sync off):
Battlefield 4
Battlefield 3
Titanfall
Crysis 1, 2, 3
Skyrim
Rage (mouse issue)
Stalker (mouse issue)
WoW
CS: GO
Wolfenstein new order
Far Cry 3
Arma 3
DayZ
Watch_Dogs(high textures was smooth, Utra still a *tiny* bit laggy)
Borderlands 2
Dota 2
I was having so much fun with Battlefield 4 last night I didn't want to stop playing. I swear my KDR is going to increase due to this new monitor. Plus I ended up having a good squad that used voice comms and worked together. I got into a helicopter and was playing around with the camera and just enjoying looking at how smooth and detailed everything was.
I jumped in a game of Titanfall and before I had to tweak it a bit because without v-sync enabled the game ran like horseshit and even then it was odd. Now it is smooth as silk with v-sync off and g-sync. I ended up at the top of the leaderboards on the first game I played in forever.
Certainly the increased resolution was a game changer because I could see enemies at farther away than I normally would. It was like having aimbot. The smoothness of the gameplay really helped as well.
So for anybody on the fence with only a single card, don't worry. I know a 780ti is pretty top of the line, but I see NO need to upgrade to SLI at this point and can wait for the next single card solution to come out.
