Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

I don't mean to start anything but I will say I actually wish PlayStation All Stars had tried to copy SSB a little closer. What they made was a game that tries to be Smash and Marvel vs Capcom at the same time and fails at being both.

I wish ANYONE copied Smash. The formula is so inherently great that I'm surprised there have been very few Smash clones. The Jump Ultimate Stars on DS was an amazing game. Instead of Japan going gaga over boring musou games, they need to Smashify their franchises. Square kind of did that with Dissidia, but I would love to see say a Marvel or DC Smash game (or Marvel vs. DC).

There are the "Nintendo has been adding some great female representation in their recent games" people.

And then, there are the "Nintendo has been adding some great waifus in their recent games" people.

The latter half isn't serious...I think....I hope.

They are both correct since all female Nintendo characters worthy of an inclusion in Smash are waifu material or do/will become upon entering the spotlight with Smash (see WFT). Can't stop creeps on teh internet.

I hope the rule in that new Persona thread gets applied to all GAF in terms of waifus really.
Is that rule "No waifus"? would be fine with me lol

Oh god

Super Smash Mahvel

I would buy ten copies

Btw, every Smash thread is like the definition of Kubler-Ross :P

What have you done to Kirby?

Pretty interesting how Wario's logo is there with all the series with revealed playable characters. Could be because of the ATs, but it strikes me odd that Mother and series like Nintedogs and Find Mii aren't there if that's the case.

Slip up? lol

He must be a starter, incoming Wario reveal!!!!

Haha wow, they did remove it and replace it with a smash ball. Look at the picture above, it's next to the fire emblem logo, now look down below. It's gone!

You forgot the "too many girls" trolls.

Oh yeah. What's up with those people? All those new female characters seem pretty cool!

Well, you can definitely have both opinions anyway.

is Smash Run confirmed offline only? I know there was that pic but I wannaseethereceipts...

Online Smash Run is the one thing I was most looking forward to with the 3DS version..

Dissidia plays nothing like Smash.

Dissidia plays nothing like Smash.
I agree. It's similar in a multi-game-crossover-fighter kind of way, like Pokken is too, but isn't really similar to Smash in mechanics at all.

PSASBR and that Turtles game kinda tried to incorporate elements of it, but overall just ended up trying to be too different. I haven't played the jump games yet.

Dissidia plays nothing like Smash.

But it has the same concept of a fanservice fighter. I'm just surprised few other companies or franchises have tried a straight up Smash clone. Considering Smash comes out once every half decade, there's definitely room for another similar title.

So, I've been giving this a lot of thought. I really enjoy posting with y'all in SmashGAF and I realize I haven't been posting in here that long so it's possible this post won't be of any interest; if so, please disregard it.

Anyway, I've decided I'm not going to be picking up either Smash game. Like I said I've been thinking about this quite a bit. I used to really enjoy Smash as a competitive multiplayer game as a kid, both the original and Melee.

When the original game came out in April 1999, I had just turned 11 and I'd only had my Nintendo 64 for a couple of years. I'd loved playing as Nintendo characters since having a Game Boy and later GBC, though, and SSB was a lot of fun for me, as a celebration of Nintendo characters. It offered a decent amount of SP content but MP was very evidently where it was at. It was so unusual and awesome to see Nintendo characters interacting like this.

SSBCast.jpg

I think my interest in the game was pretty sustained throughout my time playing the N64, and when Melee came out for GCN, I was totally pumped.

250px-SsbmBoxart.jpg

By this time I was well over 13 and I remember 7th and 8th grade in particular had weekends frequently punctuated by bouts of SSBM. I'm sure I played this plenty in SP, as well, but I especially remember the MP matches.

Seven years is a long time, though, and by the time Brawl came out, my taste in games had changed a bit. I wasn't as into video games in general. I really liked Super Mario Galaxy although it had taken me a considerable bit of time to be interested in the Wii and see its merits. Anyway, my wife got me Brawl as a birthday present a couple of weeks after its release and I probably hadn't played any SSB in a number of years at that point. I...played it twice. Maybe three times? Just the game really didn't do anything for me. The actual gameplay of Nintendo characters beating each other up is just not my kind of thing.

KirbyAndLuma.png

So when I see Kirby and Luma dancing around in a trailer, it's easy for me to get sucked back in to the world of SSB and think *has* to be a game I really want, and want to play. I mean, we're talking about some amazing heretofore unseen interactions between some of my favorite characters in the world. And I am just as into Nintendo now as I've ever been, if not significantly more so than ever.

And yet, if I'm really honest with myself, the CG character trailers do a lot for me but when we get to the actual gameplay my eyes start to glaze over a bit. I generally don't play fighting games and at its core I don't care about playing as one Nintendo character in a beat 'em up with a bunch of other Nintendo characters. I love the fan service in the game (in the positive, non-sexualized sense of the word). I love that it offers tons of content designed as a love letter to Nintendo fans because I'm sure the trophies, characters and stages in and of themselves, in these two new Smash games, offer more diverse Nintendo content, big and small, than ever before.

But...

I think I should stick to Nintendo Land, of all things, if I want a multi-franchise Nintendo fix.

250px-Nintendo_Land_%28NA%29.png

Here, I can get into in-depth miniature versions of the franchises I love. I can quest as Link(s), explore as Olimar and Pikmin, and defend earth as Samus and her Gunship, all in co-op with my wife. I can explore beautiful quilted landscapes in a riff on Balloon Fighter, drive myself bonkers trying to beat Area 9 in Donkey Kong's Crash Course, and poop out candy to increase my speed in Animal Crossing: Sweet Day. All the while, I can't earn trophies or play online, but I can earn monuments to Nintendo games in the Plaza, and stamps for extraordinarily difficult feats in various minigames. Is this the ultimate mash-up of Nintendo games, to the degree that Smash Bros. is? Probably not in the same way, no, but it does offer an immense amount of content and a far greater diversity of genres. As for the inevitale whynotboth.gif, I guess for me it just comes down to the fact that I love Nintendo games, just not fighting games.

(FWIW, I'm not writing any of this to put a damper on anyone's hype. I just am only now really realizing the games are just not for me, and wanted to take some time to explicate this to myself and all of you.)

Potential November for Wii U version? Since Amiibos should be released with WIi U version, or near to it

Hope so.

As we've seen before for many other games, there's an equally likely chance that the release date means nothing.

I've always suspected november anyway, but I'm not getting my hopes up, instead, i'm assuming brawl release:

That way, if it's in november i'll say 'ooh it's out early!'

Actually, thanks to 3DS, I don't really care when they release it, since i'll have my hands on a playable version of it. They can release it next year for all I car. Tons of the hype for the Wii U version will be deflated for me, thanks to 3DS.

That's a shame to hear max, but It sounds like you know what you're talking about. Hopefully you'll stick around here for the next few trailers at least!

Sad to lose a fellow smasher, but I respect your opinion.

Just want to let you know that:
A. Stay open minded, if you feel in your heart you want to buy it/play it, you should listen. Don't talk yourself out of something you might enjoy or love.
2. If you decide to come back, we'll welcome you with open arms.
3. If you stick to your decision, we support you as well.

Best of luck in your future endeavors.

It's not as 'easy' to clone as people think.

exactly. we don't appreciate how good the smash games are because we don't get all the bad and mediocre ones. It's like FPS only had Half Life. That's one of the main points why i can't believe many fans are eager to get Sakurai off the franchise.

Thanks amigo, I really appreciate that. I hope to see you all around GAF still!

I am the opposite. The 3ds was a filler for me until the wii u version and that was before this Nov date was a thing. I was going to get 3ds smash and sell it after the Wii U version was released. Now that this Nov date might be real I will wait for console Smash experience.

People are eager to get Sakurai off the franchise because it's much easier to accept the game not having the content they want by demonizing him then accepting he knows what he's doing.

If you took the core concept of smash bros, copy pasted it with any franchise... the game would suck. Why? Because what TRULY makes smash bros great is the SUM of all the little details. Not just the visual details, or the video game references, but also the little things the engine does. All of the gameplay mechanics have tons of minutiae, that, on their own, aren't anything special, but add them all up, and it makes for a great fighting game (even brawl can be fun!). Then you have all the animations, all the subtle references, all the little quirks the game has, everything!

Add it all up and you get smash bros. Nothing less.

No other 'smash bros clone' puts that much effort into all of the little things. I mean, from a 100 Ft View, PSASBR looks like a smash bros clone! Take a screenshot, and wow, it's playstation smash bros. Now go play it. It's not cohesive, the gameplay mechanics are not as fine tuned (some would argue broken). It didn't receive the LOVE that smash bros had making it.

There's a reason smash bros is number 1. There's a reason it's number 1 by a MILE. Nobody else had a team as passionate, as dedicated, as smash bros.

I am literally losing sleep over smash bros right now. I haven't been this excited for a game since I was a little kid. Even moreso than brawl, I think. There's no way i'm not getting smash bros in ~8 days. I'd die waiting til november.

Damn, it's a shame Smash Bros doesn't appeal you. I hope Nintendo releasing stuff like NintendoLand, amiibos, and the Mario Kart dlc is a good indication that we'll get more crossover games similar to Smash, but that can appeal to an even wider audience!

AKA Legend of Zelda syndrome

@SSB4 3DS: I'm sure I'll REALLY enjoy it, but it's nontheless a filler to hold be over until the WiiU version releases to me. By virtue of my friends not having to buy a 3DS and/or the game just to be able to play it the WiiU version will be the superior version to me. Graphics etc. are icing on the cake, but that is the most important part: Unlike SSB4 3DS I will be able to play SSB4 WiiU with ALL of my friends.
