Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XV: Kübler-Ross Edition

I never thought Mewtwo was too hard to unlock. He always seemed to just get unlocked over the course of trying to unlock everything else. Only things that I ever thought were hardish to unlock in Melee were Final Destination and the past stages.

If Andross was playable (which he's not) at least all his alts would be sorted. Literally, every other Nintendo boss that is a floating head and two floating hands. Sorted!

He's not hard to unlock, at all. In fact he's probably the easiest.

It's just a pain in the butt to do, because it's entirely passive and counterintuitive when you're actively searching for unlock methods.

I wouldn't get too hung up on Dedede's final smash, guys.

NME SALESMAN can help King Dedede!

Is he going to help Dedede get a monster to clobber that there Kirby?

They probably wouldn't be able to fit all of them in, they'd have to pick the best 7.

Also, one of the commentators on ESPN just said "salty" when talking about a football rivalry!

Honest question, I've played a good amount of Kirby games but it's not my favorite series or anything: What moves you give them? The only thing I can think of is that Meta Knoght should probably have his PM down air.

Just off the top of my head:

Meta Knight's dash attack could be replaced with a sword-first dash that I believe he's had since
the Extra mode where you play as him in Nightmare in Dream Land
. His neutral a combo doesn't have the same positioning or animation as his "normal" combo in the Kirby games starting in Super Star, from what I recall.

His Mach Tornado is an actual move that he uses in pretty much every incarnation past Adventure, but the Dimensional Cape, Shuttle Loop, and whatever-his-side-special-is-called are made up, beside Dimensional Cape being a reference to his exit animation. For his down special, I would use this move. (Triple Deluxe Spoilers) He's had it since Kirby Super Star. His side special could be a number of things but off the top of my head I think making it his sword projectile he shoots when he does his standing attack (I don't have a picture of it but think of full-health Link from the original LoZ) would work fine. His up special could be a reworked version of the cape where he does the actual exit animation from his games but exits it early... or just shuttle loop, I guess, since that does demonstrate his bat wings pretty well.

I think the biggest problem I have with Meta Knight is that his so-called supersonic sword slices aren't really representative of how he attacks in the games. He operates a lot more based on positioning and with a lot more stabbing attacks in his games than he does in Brawl, where I don't believe he has a single thrust! In addition to his specials, I'd change his neutral aerial to the spinning midair attack he frequently does (it's Kirby's neutral attack from his sword moveset) and I'd change his down aerial to something akin to Link's, since he actually does attack like that in his fights.

As for his Final Smash, there are so many better options than "he throws his cape and then slashes," which is boring and comes from absolutely nowhere. He could call in the Halberd (although having to play on top of Alfonzo while he's doing it on a particular stage would be weird), he could call in Heavy Lobster, he could fly around shooting those spark projectiles he fires at the end of his sub-game in Kirby Super Star, hell, he could even call in Galacta Knight even though that makes no sense, but at least it would refer to something in actual Kirby games!

EDIT: Right, I didn't even talk about King Dedede. He doesn't annoy me as much as Meta Knight, but what does bug me is that he has a number of moves where the hammer head rotates. That's not from any of his game and it feels very weak and unsatisfying for a character who wields a giant hammer.

At a minimum, he needs the hammer flip (the flaming attack Kirby now has) and the dash attack from Hammer's moveset. I would also rework his forward aerial so that it is akin to the swing he does when he stops and hops upward in the original Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby's Adventure fights. However, his dash attack and his up special, as terrible as it is, are perfect and help me to be more satisfied with his moveset than Meta Knight's. And of course his final smash should be Masked Dedede. :P

Whoever posted that screenshot needs to give us more! :O

That's really interesting, where did you hear that? Honestly, that doesn't surprise me at all; you can really tell she had a tough time deciding what to do with it and maybe isn't as good at rearranging her own work as she is others' work.

It's too bad, too; she's one of the best musicians of our time and her talents could have been much better utilized in ways other than just asking her to rearrange one of her own battle themes. Look what she did with Tetris (Type A) in Brawl, for example; it was breathtaking.

I sure hope she has other arrangements in Smash 4 beyond just Try, Try Again. If not, that'd be an enormous waste. Also looking forward to seeing what Yasunori Mitsuda did for this game; hopefully not just another Pikmin track!

She posted it on Twitter right after the song was unveiled. She basically said: "I had already arranged the song myself once before (for the original game), so I had a hard time deciding what to do with it, but I think what I came up with is a good fit for the stage where it plays in Smash Bros.--whichever stage that may be. ;)"

I've also heard some of her (as-of yet unreleased) new music, and it sounds incredible, so I think it was just difficult to reapproach something she had already written and adjust it ever so slightly to fit a similar-yet-kind-of-different situation.

But you don't play VS to unlock everything else.

I started Melee from scratch a couple months ago and I got all characters apart from Mewtwo and G&W within a week.... and I'm still yet to unlock them.
I've started to just leave multiplayer Vs modes on while I do other stuff to rack up the hours lol.

I had no problem unlocking Mewtwo.
I had my friends at home nearly everyday and we spent all afternoon playing Melee. We had such a blast.

I dunno, I think the Try, Try Again arrangement sounds great for Smash.

It'll probably play in the Paper Mario stage.

I think the Try, Try Again arrangement annoys me because the melody is not pronounced at all, so my brain, having experienced the original track many times in Dream Time, throws a fit and screams "NO THERE'S SUPPOSED TO BE NOTES THERE ARRGH." I guess it's okay but it's just too subtle and without the melody being distinct it's much less interesting than it deserves to be. Plus, I'd rather have the boss music anyway. It's really good.

My little nephew spent all day jumping off the ledge thousands of times in versus to unlock all his characters.

Poor Pikachu's death count.

I absolutely SUCK at describing game music so I'll just reply to one post.

It's too slow for my liking...Playing it at 2x speed makes it sound like the original.

Really? It sounds purty dang fast to me.

The only song that's felt off to me so far is the Wrath of the Reset Bomb one and that's due to weak instrumentation, though I've gotten used to it in repeat listenings.

I really hope playable bosses is a thing in the Wii U version

Ridley
Kraid
Andross
Giga Bowser
Darkrai
Master Hand
Crazy Hand
Tabuu
King K. Rool
Rudy the Clown
Ganon
Dark Matter

Though I suspect that if they ever did that, asking for that many might be asking for too much. :P

I have an actual question, tell me if you can't amswer it.

If the game leaks or any information leaks, are you and the GameXplain crew allowed to discuss the leak?

He's not going to be able to answer your question. By answering your question, he basically will admit that he learned new information at pax. That, in and of itself, may be under NDA.

When do you think SSB will leak GAF? 3 days from now? 5 days from now

TOMORROW!?

Supposedly, review copies are out in wild, and more people will get them on Monday. In about 23 minutes, the demo starts in Japan. Also, we know Ninty had a press event at PAX that's under NDA. So, combine all these three and we can say new info will come in really god damn soon.

So if there's more, we'll know soon. Right?

I guess what I mean is that the main melody is too slow...I think.

I don't think there are review copies. I think there was a press event somewhere in france/europe similar to how people in NA played it at pax. Some guy managed to get a screenshot during the event, is all.

Japan demo is in 2 hours, 15 minutes, 11 AM Japan time.

Also, Ash, if you read this - Once this is all over, and the NDA is over, and smash is out, i'd REALLY like to hear what was under NDA and what killed you the most that you couldn't talk about.

nice. it's going to be a tough wait though after the lucky butts who have ordered a jpn copy get to play the game. :3
