Same. Played it without an ounce of Japanese and then read a translation FAQ as if it were a novella-- then played it again when the patch hit. It's a really special game. I only want an official English release so I can share it with everyone.

My biggest dislike in Xenoblade at the moment.
Mainly since if you want to be good on XP they're basically somewhat mandatory.

I tend to do all the quests I can do possible in each area before advancing. I kind of got addicted to linking all the NPC characters together. And having timed/missable quests kinda get me anxious so I do them ASAP.

Historically, characters have shifted. They don't jump around. Think of the roster like this:
Pikachu jumped in Melee.
The fact that Yoshi's sitting in the middle of the other Mario mainstays kind of means past roster design is irrelevant in this case anyway.

Lucas is the primary protagonist of Mother 3. Lucas is a timid and shy boy from Tazmily Village, living there for his entire life. He is close with his family, which include his father Flint, mother Hinawa, and twin brother Claus. He also loves his dog, Boney, and goes out playing and taking walks with him often. He is very gentle and cautious, almost the complete opposite of his brother. Through his adventures, he finds himself to be quite an adept user of PSI-Powers, which he uses to great affect in his battle against the Pigmask Army.

In my theory about the order I am just talking about the single reps. The other characters are just grouped by franchise, not necessarily in order of first appearance.
I agree with you here. If you have to go Smash -> Mii Fighters or Characters -> Choose Character, that'd be too many processes and would be poor UI.
On the off-hand chance, Mii Fighters don't appear on CSS, I'm going with this:

Yeah. I'm not really sure on Dixie but I strongly believe one of these two will be right.

The Koopalings and Bowser Jr in the clown car specifically represent their portrayals in NSMB, which came out after Mario Galaxy.
The same is true with fairy type Jigglypuff coming after Greninja.

NSMB DS actually came out a year before Galaxy. The Koopalings didn't return until NSMBW, but Bowser Jr. was the primary antagonist of the first game.
The way I've been seeing this interpreted is that the character's aren't exactly arraigned by sequential order, but the order of which they're representing. Rosalina is 'representing' Mario Galaxy, and the Bowser Jr/Koopaling Clown Car is 'representing' the NSMB series. It's a bit odd, but it does fit the order. If this iteration's Jigglypuff is the retconned Fairy type from X/Y, she's right where she belongs and

I think Wolf is cut, given Fox's alt colour. I feel the same way about Dixie, and I'm also leaning towards Lucas being gone as well. That leaves:

Link is based on Twilight Princess, but he comes before Wind Waker Toon Link. The chronology angle just doesn't work.

Well actually, if you notice within the franchises the characters are actually still ordered by first appearance/representation.
...Basically it all boils down to Nintendo-logic.
Shouldn't Jiggly come after Greninja in that case because even if you say fairy Jiggly's first appearance was X/Y, you can only encounter her well after getting your starter.

The characters are not necessarily in order of first appearance, they're just grouped by franchise. (Although, in some cases they are in fact in order of first appearance). I'm theorizing that the order of first franchise entry is primarily dictating how the single reps are organized.
Namely:
Game and Watch
Punch Out
Duck Hunt
ROB
Mother
F-Zero
Animal Crossing
Pikmin
Wii Fit
Xenoblade
The characters in this game from each of those franchises are all in order and also allow other single reps to be placed within them (such as Ice Climbers and Chorus Men).

Only thing that throws me is I distinctly remember a NeoZeo post where he says immediately after the ESRB leak first hit that he a source at NoA who confirmed there were more characters, seemed sure that Mach Rider was happening and then had 'predictions' that the remaining five characters were Dixie/Ridley/Mewtwo/Impa/Mach.
What the hell was that about, if it didn't come from Vanrose or Shun_one? It was posted at least a week before the MFL guy went on 4chan again and threw them in as the remaining five too or anybody even knew what his smashboards account was.
Unless he's busy or simply not responding to people about it, would somebody on smashboards be able to directly ask him about this? Just strikes me as a weird thing to throw out there and then suddenly never bring up again, especially in the context of him being reliable in most other instances.

Some are and some aren't. Bowser Jr. appeared before Rosalina (as did Wario for that matter if they're grouping him with all the Mario characters). Jigglypuff also appeared before Lucario. An argument could also be made that Ganondorf appeared before Sheik (although they may just want to have Zelda and Sheik next to each-other).
