Don't judge me T^T

Though seriously... I want a pet chibi Miku. She's adorable.

* ahem *

On topic, honestly I'm fine with the starting roster being a bit unexpected. I LOVE unlocking in the Smash series, but hey, the more variety I get form the start, the better.

I have no idea where to start, though... do I just go right to ZSS? Or Greninja?
Good, you passed the test.

Hey guys, did you hear that you can play as Mega Man?

Source?

I get your point, but hardly any game is developed with that in mind. The thing is most buyers love unlockables :/

Yeah, and I do too to an extent... but when it's material that brings new experiences to the game like unique characters, that's a real drag. If like, everybody had a clone that you unlocked by doing some specific event with a that character, that would be a great use of unlockables. It'd get peoples' "gotta catch 'em all" juices flowing, but it wouldn't hide things that you need to have for a full game experience behind a huge time investment.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Some will be obvious. I'd be incredibly surprised if Doc isn't beating Classic with Mario or Falco isn't beating 100 man Smash.

Better get your Donkey Kong down specials ready if you want Falco fast lol

Well, according to what I saw, Doc is beating Classic over 5.0 Intensity, and Falco is beating Target Smash with the starters.

LUCINA is actually who you get if you beat 100-Man Smash with Marth, as her requirement is beating "100 Mii Fighters with Marth), and 100-Man Smash would be the easiest way.

Where did you get this info from?

Having to unlock things sucks. I'm not a teenager anymore, I don't have time to play 500 smashes to unlock somebody. If you HAVE to have a carrot to chase, then make it things like clones and alt costumes. Don't lock up unique game experiences. I'd be happy with that. They could even sell a 'fast unlocker' DLC and suckers like me would buy it.

This is why Smash needs a password system tucked in the options menu. If you don't want to go through the process of unlocking everything, just enter the various codes to unlock all the characters, stages, and game modes. If, on the other hand, you like unlockables, then just stay away from that part of the options menu and you can unlock everything normally.

Pssh, that's nothing. I hear Nintendo's making a fighting game! And you can put Mario against Kirby in it! If that ain't the hypest thing comin' out for the N64, I don't know what is!

But it's still only plays in 2D. How the fuck can Nintendo release such a piece of crap in a post-Tekken world?

Mewtwo can't be in Smash 4, because all the "Goku for Smash" guys, will be wondering why Frieza got in, and not Goku.

Assuming this is our starting roster, I would've had Luigi, Rosalina, Diddy Kong, Toon Link, Palutena, Ike, Metaknight, and Greninja as locked characters as well. I would've put Ness in the starting roster though.

I'd lock the original 4 unlockables as well as anyone who was locked in older games, so lock Marth, keep Ike :p

The true headscratcher in the unlockables roster is Wario.

Honestly I don't mind veterans being shuffled in and out of unlockable status, especially when we've already got strong hints that they'll be in (like Wario getting literally all the assist trophies). It lets them mix things up a bit and still give you the shiny new stuff upfront.

It's already kind of boring that Falco's been an unlockable in the past three games. Might as well bump him up to starter and let someone else have a turn.

Marth should have been a starter in Melee. It's long overdue that he become one.

Ike isn't terribly popular and could easily just be an unlock. Kind of like Lucario, EXCEPT WHY IS LUCARIO A STARTER!???

They didn't even use Lucario to promote a new game. They don't even use Lucario to promote THIS game.

that would be useful in melee, since sometimes you either forget or break your memory card

A bit late to late these replys, oops

I can't emphasize how fun Little Mac is to play as. It's like a Smash adrenaline rush. :D

So good to hear that. I love playing rushdown in fighters and it's great to have a Smash character that takes it to another level. Cannot freaking wait.

The satisfaction of unlocking characters is what makes me want to play as them. For me, the idea of having all your favorite characters immediately available from the start takes away any satisfaction of earning them. It's like your Pokemon starters being fully evolved in the beginning of the game versus their first forms.

I also wish there was the option to start with only twelve fighters and unlock them all. As a kid I would regularly clear my Melee data so I could unlock all the characters again.

But I love unlocking people. I love it so much.

Oh don't misunderstand me. I love unlocking characters too. Just that to dwindle the starting roster to the original 12 would be too little to me at this point. And again, I really want to play as Rosalina and Little Mac, so I'm glad they're on the starting roster.

Hell, if it were just Mario unlocked at the beginning that would be even better.

But have you seen all that's unlocked from the beginning? It's impossible that you get tired of the content they give you before you start unlocking people, it's always fast enough.

As I see it, unlocking game content keeps me going ahead and trying all characters to achieve everything I can, and when I unlock a character instead of a costume I feel like I'm getting even more new game experience, it's exciting to go back and try the new thing you got out of your gameplay (that was already new and you enjoyed anyway)

At least that's how I feel about it, it's quite old game design and less and less games do it nowadays (In favor of paid DLC sadly)

Honestly, I don't have must time for games anymore either, but Smash is the exception. I would love it if everything were locked except, like, Mario and 4 other characters. Lock all stages but 3. First time you fight on a stage or as a character, it unlocks another stage or character. First match you end up unlocking 2 things. Gradually increase the criteria for unlocking things. You'd have a lot in no time. Can't play more than 4 characters and one stage at one time anyway. Why not give you a reason to play on each stage? I think that would be so fun. I'm a little bummed the starting roster is so huge.

I'd say starters should be:

Mario
Peach
Bowser
Yoshi
DK
Link
Zelda
Sheik
Samus
ZSS
Pit
Marth
Robin OR Ike
Kirby
Dedede OR Meta Knight
Little Mac
Fox
Pikachu
Charizard
Lucario OR Greninja
Villager
Olimar
WFT
Sonic

Falcon, Wario, Mega Man, and Pac Man could go either way.

Random unlockable.

Uh, don't know about in Smash but in the FE series Ike is one of the favorite and most popular "Lords" (main character) of them all. There's a reason he got his slot.

Lucario being a starter seems entirely pointless. As does Toon Link. There was no reason to bump them to starters.

I also would have moved Metaknight and Ike to unlockable. Although the comedy of having Ike not be revealed until the leak would have been funny to see the reactions of his return.
NonoNO! The should've not revealled Marth and then shown off Lucina as a starter. Then the madness would've been glorious. Mwhahaha.

But seriously, anyone revealled prerelease ahould be a starter, and I'm glad that happened for everyone but Lucina, which was likely because she was hidden but IS wanted to advertise her.

Out of the final roster, assuming the leak is accurate, and counting for veterans, which character looks like the one you never thought you'd want to play, but seriously want to play as now?

Mine's certainly Wii Fit Trainer. I never thought in my life I'd want to Smash with her, but damn, I'm excited to now to hell!
