WSJ: ''Mojang to be bought by Microsoft'

Unless MS is willing to breach a contract they won't do that. Previous contracts will be maintained and probably NOT renewed but what's done is done.

I honestly don't know how contracts like this normally work out. Any detail that usually goes along with these contracts?

Not calling you out, I genuinely want to know.

2 Billion for a developer that has made one successful game seems like a completely idiotic deal....so it wouldn't surprise me if MS actually went for it.

Would be a waste of the IP... On many levels. Really dosent make sense, feels like a typical MS answer to anything popular.

Anything they release would obviously be on PC I think, having Minecraft as PC/Xbox only would be huge for them, I think.

It would be, but I think people are being purposely obtuse because Microsoft.

With that said though, this isn't a deal I want to see happen. Put that 2 billion into a variety of projects or something more versatile.

Also seems like a good way to piss off investors in the long run. Well, more than they already have been in regards to the Xbox division.

... I don't believe this. Not for a moment, not even from WSJ. Mojang may be loaded, but they're a tiny little studio with a trickle amount of output. If they close Minecraft on other devices, that'd piss people off. Besides, isn't 4J in charge of minecraft on consoles, and not Mojang? They already make royalties from minecraft, and minecraft has sold the majority of what it's going to sell during its lifetime already. 2 billion dollars makes zero sense.

Doubt it. Notch is loaded and I doubt he'd sell to Microsoft.

Never doubt the power of the dollar.

Microsoft buying Mojang means Microsoft gets control of Minecraft (and the inevitable sequels) and all other Minecraft merchandising. The only part of this news that seems 'out of sync' is the $2B number. Either Mojang are settling for much less or the Minecraft IP isn't as valuable as we have been led to believe.

Yup it's not funny at all. This could potentially be a huge shot to the jugular by MS to Sony. I'm assuming the people who think it's funny are probably just a little too much in the Sony camp and are feeling a bit insecure right now.

Sony has absolutely no answer to something like this, while MS could go spending billions more and buying even more studios. When the kids for the next 10 years hear that the new Minecraft is only going to be on Xbone, I doubt any of them will be picking up a PS4.

It's not a huge shot to the jugular either. That too is just wishful silliness. A know you love Microsoft bro, but Sony is already decimating Xbox One and they're doing it without Microsoft's legions of cash. It's not going to change because of Minecraft.

It is, however, a way for Microsoft to finally come out from the shadows and have a real showstopper that might actually meaningfully move units for once, but it's not a way to change the trajectory of this generation.

That said, it's really fucked up. Gamers came into Minecraft on PC, and then played it everywhere under the sun. This was to the benefit. Gamers everywhere could share their ideas, their creativity, and enjoyed its simplistic appeal.

I think it should be abundantly clear at this point that Microsoft's whole idea of strategy is simply to buy shit endlessly until something sticks. Doesn't matter if they take a well loved multiplatform franchise and cut off the majority of gamers from it; just as long as Sony and Nintendo doesn't have it! I imagine them stomping their feet on the ground and whining loudly as they sign these sorts of deals.

I like that people assume they have 2 billion to spend on games and this is just how they're choosing to spend it.
This, I can't imagine Microsoft doing something like that. You can do so much more with all that money..

Sony has absolutely no answer to something like this, while MS could go spending billions more and buying even more studios. When the kids for the next 10 years hear that the new Minecraft is only going to be on Xbone, I doubt any of them will be picking up a PS4.
Oh come on now. Do you really think MS itself will spend "billions more" on gaming related stuff?

2 Billion for a developer that has made one successful game seems like a completely idiotic deal....so it wouldn't surprise me if MS actually went for it.

"successful" is the biggest understatement of the year. But im glad you understand how to run a billion dollar business better than Microsoft. You should apply for the next CEO

How do you get the 1.23 billion number?

Minecraft on PC costs $27 and the counter says about 16.5 million on PC. Minecraft on consoles costs $20 and multiplied the remaining of the 54 million. It's not the most precise but it gives a general idea. These are only raw numbers only to compare to $2 billion and how much Microsoft would be overpaying

If you think one game is worth $2 billion rather than making actual games with that money, it's you that's too close to MS, punkin.

Facebook thought Oculus was worth 2 billion. There's no way that thing makes anywhere near as much money as Minecraft has and will continue to make. What's the point of spending the $2 billion to make a bunch of games that in all likelihood would do little better than breaking even and sell maybe a couple million copies at best when you can get a sure thing? Not to mention the sequel would likely be a sure thing too.

hopefully the people at mojang are smarter than this.

within ten years an MS owned mojang will be gutted out and put to work on menial tasks or supporting a dumb peripheral.

don't be another rare.
And what are they doing right now that's so important?

Mojang is a one-hit wonder studio. No offense to the people there, but they are *not* comparable to Rare.

Why not just buy Take Two? Then Xbox would have GTA, Bioshock, Borderlands, etc exclusive.

That deal would make much more sense.

Higher risk perhaps? Take Two finances are not very good aren't they? iirc Mojang you're buying a thriving IP with merchandising, brand recognition and generational clout.

I suspect the SECOND they buy this company, Minecraft 2 will be announced with Halo themes, Sunset Overdrive themes, Forza themes.

They're going to multi year this biznatch

They could potentially leave it multiplat and just rake up cash.

They could also release it on WiiU and n3DS and REALLY rake in cash.

If this does pan out, just watch as they kill off the Mac & Linux versions of Minecraft, along with the PS3 & PS4 versions.

but they could take it down form the store because they own the game.

Haha, that won't happen. Not how this works.

And you think that'd even be smart if they could do that? That'll show gamers how much they want their money - take the lollipops from their mouths as they're sucking on its fruity deliciousness!

The WSJ is surprisingly accurate about these kinds of things. We know at least there's talk between MS and Mojang. Where there is smoke there is fire.

Not sure if it will happen, though.

This will totally help Microsoft's image, right?

And people wonder why their brand is currently the target of so much hate. I've proudly stopped supporting them since the Kinect, and frankly it's a pretty easy thing to do with their current software offerings.

"Minecraft 2" makes basically no sense. It would also ruin one of the main selling points of Minecraft, it's a far, far better game than it was at launch, not to mention beta/alpha/indev

Just saw this on my CNBC Real-Time ticker. Which was odd because even a new console may not make that news ticker. But "MS near deal to buy Minecraft for 2B" got sent out... But not the WSJ ticker, oddly enough.

For what it's worth, M&A that is sent out to their tickers and apps, while sometimes still fail, are never really false in my experience. Usually only pretty significant business news comes down these lines. I was just as surprised to see the words "Minecraft" even appear on my RT tickers at all as I was to see the price tag MS is offering. Point is though it's likely a very certain source if it's being sent out on CNBC tickers.

Minecraft is really, really popular with kids. A market that Microsoft has had difficultly reaching for a long time.

It would be like buying the Mario IP in the 90s.

Just to get a sense of scale, do we have any figures on the revenue Minecraft has generated so far? Going by the 54 million copies sold and prices ranging from $15 to 20, the game itself is probably a tad above $1B but I have no idea what the DLC and various tie-ins could have made.
