Xbox Play Anywhere Boosts Player Activity by 20%, Says Microsoft

That's why i have a steam deck. Because it has play anywhere for every single game and not just a select few that you had to ask for permission.

That only works if you stay in a PC ecosystem. It will be truer when you can play Steam games on Xbox consoles. Unless you mean literally, in that case, you can take your Steam Deck pretty much anywhere. :messenger_squinting_tongue:

It doesn't matter what player think, because players are beneficiaries here. What matters is that major Third Party AAA studios have no more interest in Play Anywhere now that Xbox platform is shrinking.

The less copies of Xbox titles are sold, the less it makes sense for third parties to support Play Anywhere. Because Play Anywhere is directly affecting the sales of the PC versions of the same games. The bottom line is that Third Parties LOSE MONEY from joining Play Anywhere.

UWP hasn't been used for gaming since June 2019 when PC Gamepass, Ultimate, and GDK were introduced.

They're MSIXVC packaged Win32 games. Same on consoles.
Both Xbox and Xbox on PC use the GDK api, so they are essentially Xbox console games on PC.

No i mean same thing as microsoft. Im on my PC and play my games and then i can play them while taking a shit on my steam deck because unlike xbox, on steam it's the default.

You know what annoyed me about this?

I and many have been saying play anywhere is a great service for years and MS just ignored it, let it get worse and put all their eggs into gamepass.

thwy should have been pushing play anywhere this hard years ago.

If not for Play Anywhere my activity in the Microsoft gaming ecosystem would be 0% so......yeah, sure
Did you cancel your gamepass too?

it's a nice option but Microsoft also claimed Game Pass doesn't hurt sales so I'm not sure I'd trust them about anything frankly
Now that MS are chasing game sales again and gamepass has a bit of a bad rep we get all this Play Anywhere marketing from them for a feature they introduced in 2016. I expect a lot of forum shills and MS themselves to be trying to push this as the most amazing feature now because the marching orders require MS to compete with their store and not be pushing gamepass as much.

I feel like MS spends 99% of their time promoting services, controllers, hardware, features etc.
Can we get back to mind blowing games? Show us something innovative from your 999+ studios to make us care.

Won't Play Anywhere lose a lot of the appeal next gen, since Steam games will be playable on Xbox?

PA will be applicable for the console-only releases afterward and also will still continue to retroactively work on the decade(?) worth of PA releases that folks already have tied to their accounts without needing to repurchase them.

If the next Xbox is just a PC then Play Anywhere stops mattering since all you're playing is PC games.

The quality of the Xbox PC experience and the games available vs Steam will determine where people buy games IMO.

I'm not the target for this sales pitch. I want to play in one place only -- sitting on my ass in my recliner in the living room, thank you very much.

They had cross buy for the Vita/PS3/PS4 generations, I think. My memory is getting has always been bad. Those recent icon leaks make it look like it could return for something in the future too.

I'm still buying games for PS4 and have noticed many come with a free PS5 version. It says that on the back of the physical RE4 remake game I recently bought and an Atlus game I was looking at in the store. I know some games charged for a PS5 version at the beginning of the generation, but that doesn't seem to be a thing any longer.

You have it backwards, they are essentially PC games on Console. GDK isn't an API, it's the entire dev kit. It uses the Windows API aka Win32. Xbox ecosystem games are MSIXVC packaged Win32 games for PC, Console, Cloud.

It's an ecosystem thing. The hardcore Xbox userbase wants Play Anywhere regardless of what other ecosystems may have. Xbox versions will be optimized for the hardware.

The next gen Xbox Console is a Console. Stated multiple times to be a Console. If it was just a PC, then they wouldn't need $1k+ Magnus, they could release PC consoles at any price point. It will have Console SKUs optimized for the fixed spec hardware.
