August 2014 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes September 9th

Just under an hour and a half to go! For some reason I'm super excited for tonight's numbers. The NPD threads always move blazingly fast and are reliably entertaining. Hopefully Aqua or Cream will come through with the numbers too later on tonight.

For me this is the last of the quiet ones before the run up to Christmas

September he said.

Doesn't seem crazy to me, White PS4 has been taking pre-orders for months now (allways very well positioned on Amazon list) and the promotion deal with Sony will also result in a larger increase for Ps4 compared to Xbox One as was the case with WD. Add that to the fact PS4 is constantly beating the XB1 and 2 to 1 seems very possible.

Nope, just going by what I have seen around 20 local stores.

Be careful with sweeping generalisations without specific clarification that you aren't talking about NPD data...otherwise people will assume you're an insider.

See Abdiel's posts for a good reference. He works at Best Buy and labels his claims appropriately.

This:

Hey everyone, sorry for any delay in getting to this thread. I saw it was up the other day, but I've been a bit busier and wasn't able to really scan the system for general trends. And honestly, it hasn't really been all that 'interesting' as far as trends go.

PS4 remained in a similar pacing to what it has been, whether it's a bit up in some stores (Madden saw new systems purchased for both consoles), or a bit lowered in others. No real steep drop offs or anything, but not an exaggerated upsurge, either. We've got well over 500 of the White PS4 bundle preorders just in our district, which is kind of crazy. That game is going to be crazy. I await September's thread with wide eyes.

XB1 sales are still not great, but they haven't tanked, either. (The madden bundle has been the primary one sold since release, to coincide with the Madden-fever) The new bundles got a few pre-orders each, but that was kind of it. I feel like they will do better once they're on the floor, and customers are in 'grab from the shelf' mode. The PS4 mindshare is still really hurting them though. Customers come in aware that PS4 is 'winning' and that the gap between the two consoles continues to grow in terms of player base, too, which is a hard hurdle to leap.

Wii U seems to only be consistent at being all over the place. Some stores continue to sell the thing well, with MK8 still doing solid sales... Other stores haven't moved a unit in a week. It's pretty head-scratching, honestly.

So, yeah. Pretty boring month over all. I do feel like the Destiny PS4 bundle is tempering their monthly sales, because there's plenty of customers that ask about it, and choose not to pre-order, as well, but the scale in terms of who is even asking about the various bundles is very skewed in favor of the PS4.

i dont get it. he said 1 thing i can say. It is not like he was saying it as fact. When i read his message, to me there was nothing hinting he was an insider.

So is every little thing now a banhammer?

I usually have some school/sport related kid activity going on when NPDs are announced. Tonight, other than cooking up some chicken, I got nothing going on, and I took tomorrow off to get new tires and play the shit out of Destiny.

Time to watch the madness.

1) NPD PR is about to release

2) This is an NPD thread where everyone is waiting with bated breath for numbers

3) Someone claims "One thing I can say Is Madden did pretty good. Vita picked up a bit to."

4) Everybody assumes they're talking about NPD data

With respect to the unique context we're in, any declarative statements will be construed as statements regarding NPD numbers UNLESS clarified.

It's crucial to maintain the integrity of sales discussions. If people just randomly spout statements about NPD that aren't true, there's no point in proper discussion. So clarification on this kind of thing is very important.

i dont wanna be arguementative but why cant he be ignored and we all just wait. he made a claim, he made a claim, for all we know he was thinking something else and writing something else. as i said when he made the "claim" i was like psshh. he does not need to be threathened with a "ban hammer"

Because every little detail will be scrutinised, not only by members of our forum, but also the Internet.

Thousands of sites across the Internet have used NeoGAF as a source for NPD numbers. If someone makes an incorrect claim and no one addresses it, what does it say about our reputation?

And, I know that at least one NeoGAF mod actually receives NPD numbers, so they can verify any claims pretty quickly.

ok. fair enough. but why would a reputable site use an ordinary poster's "claim?" but i get you. I doubt it would affect the reputation of the site

This is one strange thread lol. So it's 6:30 right?

Maybe this is your first NPD thread but you can't really claim something like that without any backup. If it's something you have seen on your local area then you must state it to avoid this kind of reaction, unless you like living on the danger side and risk a ban on every thread you participate in.

It's an unspoken rule that if someone is bold enough to proclaim "Madden sold this" or "Vita is up from last month"...without any qualifiers or clarification they aren't talking about NPD numbers...then they have access to NPD numbers.

This is because, as I said, the mods can verify claims and ban someone for nonsense. So people only say something when they know it's true.

Insiders pop up all the time on this forum without warning. But if they don't have a reputation for being accurate they'll get called out.

Take it you didn't see Polygon quoting Pachter's predictions as fact. Some posters are regularly better at predicting results and GAF is a regular source for many many articles

no, hardly read gaming websites since i joined neogaf and only knew about polygon since i joined neogaf

It's a lot more fun this way though, because these anecdotes usually end up in nothing.

I was just making a general prediction. Don't look too much into it, otherwise Xbox won this month, unlikely.

Not trying to pile more skepticism on you, but you can't just say stuff as if it's authoritative and then say things as ambiguous as "don't look too much into it."

Define "too much."

See, it's not helpful. That's what riled everyone up when even Ars Technica (I believe it was them) said that. Those words make anyone sound kind of patronizing now.

Not busting your balls, just trying to let you see another point of view.

Real fun will be NPD september.

Tonight I'm curious to see if Madden bundle helped the Xbox One.

October 2013: "November will be verrrry interesting."
December 2013: "January will be verrrry interesting."
January 2014: "March will be verrrry interesting."
May 2014: "June will be verrrry interesting."
August 2014: "September will be verrrrry interesting."

LOL! Absolutely loving this post :D

Love when I get some "me" time to watch it all unfold for good or for ill.
