SE: "To commemorate the 8th anniversary of the announcement of Final Fantasy XV in the form if Versus XIII, we would like to announce the release of the game's demo next year with the download code available on March 17 and the actual demo available whenever we want after that.

Please be excited."

8 years since this was announced, and you'd call this "early"?

I think it's absolutely crystal clear that Versus/XV is beset by the exact same production flaws that led to XIII taking so long and critically under-performing.
There's no evidence of that. Square Enix has taken the last few years trying to get rid of those exact problems by creating the Luminous Studios that is supposedly a hell of a lot better than Crystal Tools ever were and they were created as a responce to the exact problems they had with FFXIII & XIV 1.0's development. That said, even the best development tools can't do the impossible, so if FFXV is as big & ambitious Nomura has been hyping it up to be, they still have a lot of hard, manual labor to actually create the world, content & everything for the game.

No, based on the time it's taken, it is actually showing worse symptoms of development hell.
No it's not. FFXV's development has actually advanced pretty well, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED. They first had to wait for the Crystal Tools to be finished. Then they noticed those are total crap and not in any way suitable for the FFVsXIII they were planning, so they had to create custom tools. Then they had to help with FFXIII from late 2008 to late 2009. Then they got a relatively small team to work on the game after they helped finish FFXIII's development by 2010. At that point, they were still basically at zero actual content having been made for FFVsXIII. Then, In less than a year, they went from having almost nothing to having a build of the game that looked & played like the January 2011 trailer (which was from a late 2010 build of the game). After that they begun hearing talks of the next gen consoles and started up cross-gen development. In Fall 2011 they already had the whole world traversable. We know that they had a build of the game in 2012 where they were driving around the world with a car, but the performance of the PS3 version was lacking so they decided to abandon it. (less than?) A year later they had the fairly impressive looking build of the game they showcased in the E3 2013 trailer, which already had stuff like the massive Leviathan attack that, from what I've gathered, didn't belong to the original PS3 version because it couldn't handle stuff like giant water-tornadoes & buildings being flown around all while a massive Leviathan was wrecking shit in the background.

FFXV is a massive game that is way, waaaaay more ambitious than the FFXIII trilogy altogether, so it's taking time to develop. It IS a big game so of course it's not devoid of problems, but I don't think it has been as problematic as you are implying.

And I do think we have plenty of precedence to look at a demo and not think "this means its a slice of a bigger game that is around the corner" but rather "this might be a mere milestone in development, and could certainly be one of the first pieces of the game that they actually complete in full".
Again, the implied demo "beginning of FFXV" portion of the game was already done in some form in 2011 already. This is not in any way comparable to how much Toriyama screwed around & didn't have any idea what they were doing with FFXIII until December 2008.

This is all they got...

Demo may not be even hitting the day of release. If not, this is pretty desperate. Meanwhile, a Polish company probably less than a quarter of their size is going to release the mighty Witcher 3

A Polish company in which all they do is release mainline Witcher games. Not even an apt comparison.

SE is massive.

So if that English trailer twitter thing is real. Is Sqaure going to upload a trailer sometime this week? I mean why would they have an English trailer at TGS? It must be so it can be uploaded at the same time the Japanese one is like they did with XIII.

Without a countdown or anything? I mean surely it would have started well in advance right?

What is going on?

There's nothing in the OP but do we know if the EU release is the same time and if we get the demo as well? They could be stupid questions but I'd rather have some sort of confirmation

I'm sorry, but it seems like you said "there's no evidence of development hell" and then described in detail exactly how this is development hell and why it's development hell.

All the waiting for engines, the restarts and new phases of the project, the move to new platforms and new engines... describing how the project is just bigger and more ambitious than other games... you realize that is the textbook definition of development hell, right? Do you think Duke Nukem Forever was really all that different? It's all the same development hell checklist.

I think XV will be good because it has to be. They will hold it back until it is good. But is this game announced in 2006 a troubled production? Yes, I don't think it can be argued, it absolutely is.

You can draw an arbitrary line in the sand and say "here's where the game really started" but not only is that just buying into SE marketing and ignoring the history of its longer development (all they needed to do was rebrand the game?), but I have seen little evidence that things are all rosy post-PS4 production. There is something inherantly inefficient about Square Enix's development workflow, and I don't think blaming Toriyama or other creators explains it. Nomura gets the benefit of the doubt because they are in a position where his game needs to be good, and they just never push it out the door. But he's not going to make a better game because he is just an inherently better producer. He's going to make a better game because they give him 9+ years until it is good. That is a troubled production, through and through. And it's not Nomura's fault, just as it wasn't Toriyama's. SE's work structure is a bad place to make games that are released in any reasonable fashion.

Maybe it'll be a multi-language trailer. Didn't they do that with FFXIII?

What time is Square's TGS booth supposed to open?

Thank you lord Nomura. If FFXV comes out next year the 2015 will literally be the greatest year of my life.

4 of my favorite series are getting releases in 2015 if XV comes out in 2015

- XV
- Bloodborne
- Persona 5
- Metal Gear Solid V
And you can almost count Smash since it's close to next year.

Plus you have the movie side of the year.

God next year will be great (even if XV doesn't come out)

+Type-0

2015 looking like a good year to buy a PS4.

No, not pretty obvious and not very very likely to happen.

Imho SEs biggest FF game release in 2015 (unless Versus will be 2015 as well). There is nothing better to persuade people to buy it with some nice extra ... like a demo of Versus. Writing's been on the wall, IMHO.

I've always believed in a four month gap.
They have talked about a simultaneous worldwide release in relation to the localization of their biggest games like FFXV. They did it with FFXIV, no reason they couldn't do it for FFXV, especially considering the west might end up being way more important for FFXV's success while the Japanese console market continues to diminish into nothingness, so pushing it to be released simultaneously (or far earlier than 4 moonths later) might seem like something they'd want to pursue.

This is all they got...

Did that Polish company also re-build an MMO from scratch in a little over 2 years while updating its old version while developing Witcher 3? Does that Witcher 3 include at least half a dozen completely different playable character, gigantic enemies attacking massive cities etc.?

Awesome, and a US release date for Type-0!

What a strangely stealth announcement of a US release date, can't believe they didn't get this into the PS4 E3 conference if they knew it was coming so early next year.

Famassu what would it take for you to admit that FFXV has been in development hell? Like, on top of all the other evidence we've had which shows the game has struggled, what could Square Enix possibly announce which would make you accept that internally they are unhappy with how things have been going?

He's 100% likely wrong, don't worry.

This is awesome news, was planning on getting type-0 anyways. Im just glad that we are getting something ffxv related, its been over a year since the last trailer.

I'm not sleeping until I see a new trailer for both games.

Can't wait. Finally.

I played Type-0's demo on my PSP in 2012 and it was fantastic. Can't imagine how amazing the full game in HD will be. Let alone XV.

Yeah, 2015 is shaping up to be insane.

A representative from Square Enix could not confirm that the demo will be available the exact same day as Type-0 HD

To think that we only saw about 30 min of footage of this game for 7 years.

And to think that we actually get to play a bit of it soon.
I think a part of me will be a bit sad when FFXV gets released. Its like an end of an era in gaming. In our lives even.

2015 is gonna be a special year.
I was about 9 years old when the game was first revealed... crazy to think that by the time the game releases I'll be in my Senior year of high school.
