Final Fantasy XV TGS 2014 Trailer | Lord Nomura giveth us His only Son so we may live

What's wrong with modern fantasy settings?

XII and XIV are more "traditional" FF fantasy. XIII and XV are FFVII-esque sci-fi/fantasy. SE isn't giving us the same thing over and over again and people are complaining about it.

XIV was created with no originality whatsoever. Yoshi P designed the game so he could gather up as many World of Warcraft players as he possibly could.

I personally thought XII was poorly designed and had some of the worst characters in the entire series. I just couldn't get in to the characters at all.

The last good main series Final Fantasy was XI and that was the best MMO of its time.

Edit: Oops, forgot to actually answer your question, sorry. I just don't care for science fiction games or any science fiction stories at all for that matter. They just seem so boring to me. I feel like there's a lot more room for originality and interesting ideas with medieval or steamplunk settings that haven't been done yet. Most science fiction games are just too ridiculous with their designs. I would say that the previous medieval Final Fantasy games are more "realistic" than the Final Fantasy games we get now...

Looks great apart from the specular and DoF aliasing. Hopefully they can smooth that over like RaD.

I don't feel like I've learnt much more about the characters or world though.

are we really going to argue about how a game that was announced almost 10 years ago is suddenly a xenoblade ripoff because its open world and has wild creatures as it was always supposed to be?

Thanks Blim.

Did Versus also have all those giant creatures, huge monsters roaming and even dinosaurs? Honest question, I dunno. Even the artstyle of the monsters is similar. I mean this:

As I was watching the trailer I was thinking of much it looks like Xenoblade, which isn't a bad thing, but I'd prefer another, more unique, style. Well, in fact I want a new medieval/fantasy Final Fantasy :(

XIII did.

to each his own, i personally adored FFXII and think FFIX is bottom tier in the franchise

how do you even know that ?

There are cities and civilization in the game. That's where these guys come from.
The monster is in the wild and probably in an area untouched by advancement and tech.
How do you reconcile those two together ?

Think of it as people in the modern world doing a safari in a car.

But instead of lions and rhinos we get an adamantoise in the game.

What's so incomprehensible about this ?

Anyway I am done arguing about the art direction.

It's a Nomura product so this will be criticized to death.
I respect you a lot for trying either way :)

No shut up!

Final Fantasy XIII and even FFX have gigantic creatures you fight. X when you get into Zanarkand and beyond. XIII on Pulse. It's not really a Xenoblade influence.

Besides, Xenoblade X(and Xenoblade itself) looks to be far more sci-fi focused then 15 so it's not like they are excactly the same style.

It has already been decided.
Xenoblade's ugly ass characters were never going to touch a FF at all.

It's world scale though, that's still undecided.

Well, I can't help but feel completely underwhelmed by that. I was hoping for one of those, "Alright, that looks awesome!" moments once the end of the trailer came around, but I felt just a sense of disappointment. Besides the music (which was absolutely fucking amazing), there was literally nothing that grabbed my attention. The combat was very, very unattractive (looks really boring). The shots of the group in the car driving around kind of seemed lifeless, except really the part where they look out over the lake during the sunset.

I don't know. It looks a little inconsistent visually too. Musically, however, it was wonderful.

I don't know... I just kind of shrugged my shoulders after that. I hope the next trailer does more for me. After telling myself that FFXIII would end up turning out fine after having a similar feeling, I'm more than a little hesitant to expect any different. But we'll see. I'm happy to see so many people are excited about it though. I wish I could be the same.

well, nomura did design the monsters in ffv...and he did art design for this game as well.

Oddly enough(maybe not so), the goblins in the trailer seem to be modeled after Amano's FFII goblins(not Nomura's FFV goblins). I think they are pulling for some "classic" FF monsters in general. The old trailer(back when they were using the PS3 build) showed Garchimaceras(in their FFV/FFVIII design).

The Versus trailers showed off some Behemoth style creatures that were kinda big. Huge wandering creatures aren't new to FF though

Yep. XV is definitely like contemporary Midgar-esque setting. It's pretty cool when juxtaposed to the swords, magic, n' monsters and stuff.

Yep. This game is doing nothing stylistically that wasn't done in FF7 and FF8, it's just at greater fidelity. People balking at the contrast must have been asleep during the PS1 era.

There was something about both Noctis and Stella being able to see something about people deaths, wonder if that its still in. And the road trip/love story sounds amazing, FFVIII is my favorite FF

It was still in the E3 re-announce trailer when it became XV, it was the "light" they were talking about at the beginning of the trailer (atleast judging by interviews where they referenced that ability in that way too), so I'd imagine it is.

FF13 already had giant creatures on the field that you fight

The graphics look great, the landscapes beautiful. But I'm not digging the B-boys on a road trip vibe I'm getting from this trailer. I guess it can't be helped though. Until Nomura stops doing character designs Final Fantasy is going to be defined this way.

On Luna:
The guy who worriedly says "Is she safe?" is not Noctis, but the other guy voiced by Mamoru Miyano. The himecut girl? Perhaps.
So no, I don't think Stella is Luna?

"Astral shard" (which totes reminded me of Dalamud Talons from FF14 by the way) is called "the meteor from the age of myths" in Japanese.

Dat Stella shot.
Dat score.

I cannot lie, I cried.

It looks silly.

It's a bunch of modern Japanese fashion models riding around in a luxury car while a fantasy video game plays around them. No effort has been made to design it like a believable, coherent world, it's just a bunch of stuff they think looks cool/will sell thrown together.

kinda like ff7 with the trains and motorbikes and *gasp* monsters with similar designs as ffxv? ff8 as well did the same thing...

where were you back then?
