Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

What voltage settings are you using to overclock it that high? I ordered two MSI GTX 970's myself,I would like to ask how much voltage increase is required to push these cards.

I would like to overclock these to at least 1250 clock, 1300 if I'm lucky, just I've never tinkered with voltage increase.

Just bump it up to max in afterburner, it's a very small increase. I increased 5C in idle temps after the overclock, but that is with the fans completely off. Sitting steady at 45C right now.

I love how they are GPU limited in 3 way and 4 way SLI @ 1080p 4xMSAA in Crysis 3.

Those GPUs are just spanking that game.

As someone who has 3way SLI, I can happily recommend it. I have had almost no problem getting it working in games. The scaling and lack of microstutter have been wonderful (statistically 3 way has less runt frames/frame pacing problems). Only game I have had trouble with really Metro Last Light and Redux, but that is a fluke...

Good to hear. Next year I will look into doing a CPU/Mobo upgrade (provided intel pull their finger out) so will definitely get a board capable of 3 way SLI to open that path up for myself. Whether I actually go for it/need it or not is a different story...

Are there any reviews specifically for the MSI 970? Just seen that CCL, who are only a couple fo miles from me, have them in stock.

I've just been going through this one: http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/msi_geforce_gtx_970_gaming_review,1.html

Can't decide if I should pick up the EVGA SC w/ ACX cooler or the MSI one... temps and noise is not noticably different (about 5 degrees C) and the EVGA one is 20 bucks cheaper while offering the slightly higher clockspeeds (1165/1317 vs MSI 1140/1279). It's my first GPU upgrade (well since I put a 256MB card in my first PC like 8 years ago lol) so I'm torn...

That's what lead me to 3 way. I had 2 way once and microstutter led me to replace that thing for a single GPU as fast as I could afford it.

Wow, I had all but written off this generation of cards until 20nm comes in.

I was thinking about an R9 285 but the card was just pathetic. Barely any improvement on the old 7970.

The TDP of only 145W on the 970 is amazing. I run my PC in a small box room, so it gets a bit hot and sweaty if I draw too much power.
The price seems pretty reasonable too, which was always NVidia's weakness.

I think I'll wait to see if the 960 is similarly impressive and make a decision between them.
Hopefully I'll be able to get them at decent prices for by the time I'm playing Witcher 3.

I hope AMD does something good with 20nm cards next year. I don't want NVidia to get a monopoly and start price gouging.

Don't go after the clock speeds, it so easy to overclock them more yourself anyway. Go with the cheaper one or just the one you can get your hands on first if you don't care about those 20 bucks.

I can really recommend the MSI though.

Make sure it is PCIe 3.0 X16 for all slots. May sound stupid, but there is definitely a performance delta from 8x ith cards as powerful as this.

Yeah, I even force 3way SLI in old games like Halo CE so I can crank up the GeDoSaTo even more :P Which 2-way did you have a lot of microstutter in? I have had 8800 GTs, 470s and 570s.

Gonna be really hard to avoid getting that 970. Seems a significant step up from my 770 and at a reasonable price. I feel like I'm going to need those bullets in my chamber for GTA V and the Witcher 3.

Sigh, my 770 isn't even that old. Hopefully I can get a decent price for it.

Can't wait to see how AMD respond. Finally card prices are coming back down to ok-ish prices.
I will wait until Witcher 3 is due.

Yay! Materiel.net already shipped my Strix, glad I pulled the trigger early cause it was out of stock in less than an hour :o

Can't wait to put these bad boys in my pc. I need The Witcher 3 now!!!

Are there any 6GB 970s?

Is there much of a difference between prices for Canada and the US? I may be moving from the US to Canada at some point and I'd rather buy in the cheaper place.

Ordered an ASUS 970. Gonna be a nice upgrade from my 560Ti.

After some bad experiences in the past with ATI, my current ~3 year upgrade cycle with Nvidia seems to align with some really nice cards: 8800GT -> 560Ti -> 970

i'm still rocking an i7 920 processor (yeah, i'm due for a new build soon hopefully this year)

if I replace my 570 with a 970, would I notice much difference or would my CPU bottleneck me too much for the moment?

Upgrading from a 2gb 680.

970 looks great, but I'm tempted to go 980 for maximum improvement. Can't make up my mind.

Any word on the msi gtx 980 twin frozr?

Also if I have a gtx 770 now, is the 970 going to give me a noticeable increase at 1080p? Or will I have to go with the 980 to see a big difference?

It is also cooler, uses less power, and overclocks incredibly well.

AMD needs to drop prices ASAP.
Damn, I bought my 290 in March and there haven't really been any demanding games since then that have pushed this card too hard. I might sell it and swap over to team green for a change. The 4gb of VRAM was the deciding factor with the 290 over the 780.

The 970 gives over 15fps more for Watch Dogs than the 770. That's significant. Then there's the 4gb of ram, which I think will become more and more required. I don't think my 770's 2gb is gonna cut it for much longer.

I went with the EVGA 970 that's overclocked for a little extra. I've had the EVGA FTW 670 for a couple of years and it's been a great card.

I have Amazon Prime, but they're sold out of everything, and Newegg had it, but that means no free 2-day shipping. I saw they have a Premier program that offers free "3-day or less" shipping, so I signed up for the free trial and will cancel once I receive it and make sure it works. :P

They are already?

They are working on it, my friend. So excited.

It is highlighted that those with 780 Ti cards, it might not be worth upgrading to this, but those with 680 (including my 680 DirectCU II Top), it is time to jump to a nicer ship! Hurrah!

Mrgrgr.

I don't know what to do.

I haven't had the money before now, but for a while I've been paying attention to GPUs for when I make my first build. I've always looked at the £200 range (give or take £40), which is what the Gigabyte 770 currently goes for (£240). But now I see the 970 at £300, and although it seems like a lot to me it makes more sense. It'll last a lot longer, partly due to that 4gb ram, it has the downsampling software which should make playing the big list of old games I have easier, and so on.

The frugalist (I don't think that's a word) in me says that a 960 will come if I wait (and a whole lot of other things, like building a machine for my 720p TV and using a 750ti), because I edge ever closer to that £1000 mark with a £300 card. But the long term thinker in me says that the extra £60 or so will make it last longer and I won't have to spend money on an upgrade as soon, especially if I have a 4gb card to keep me going vs a 2gb one.

There's GTX 970s already retailing for £260 and even reference designs are scaling up to 1400-1500mhz. You don't have a decision to make, the 970 is the only legitimate choice.

Buy a 2GB card for more than £150 now and you're just pissing money away.

There were reports of the Nvdiia downsampling working on non-maxwell cards (obviously an oversight). Anyone have any more info on this?

This one's in German http://www.gamestar.de/hardware/gra...est/nvidia_geforce_gtx_970,861,3078382,2.html but you can look at the graphs ;) and especially the cooling is impressive: http://www.gamestar.de/hardware/gra...est/nvidia_geforce_gtx_970,861,3078382,5.html Silent but still cool (click on 'Temperatur' in the graph).

Looks to be the 970 to buy right now together with the Asus Strix.

Bleh...Dont get the nice blower cooler with the 970 and it looks like less Displayports? Going off of EVGA site.

I cracked Smokey, got the 970 G1 from Gigabyte via Amazon. Snapped it up minutes after it went on sale.

Just bought an EVGA 980. Gonna be a nice bump from my 580. Now I just have to tell my wife and hope she doesn't overreact.

But it is my birthday next month so happy birthday to meeeeeeeeeee!

Cool Thanks man, sounds like a sound Investment I can not wait to try these cards out with my new X99 Build(i7 5820K).
