Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Look closer. The G1 970 Grief's referring to is generously overclocked whereas the benchmark you found compares the two at stock (well, at stock overclocks).

Ooooooh. I see.

I'll have to try and push mine a little further when it arrives. But I'm sure I'll be happy with it.

EDIT: Holy shit. I found the OC benchmark for the 980 Windforce. Here it is side by side with the 970.

Stop getting me excited like this.

Have you been monitoring your temperatures at all? What temps do your cards sit at after gaming for a while?

lol, sry. Temps on the EVGA are so so compared to my old Gigabyte 680. Running a demanding game without V-Sync can get them up to @74-75° max (so far). They are constantly running in turbo mode @1316mhz. My case is pretty well ventilated but of course small (Fractal R3). I'll probably run a few rounds of Heaven later to do further testing. Didn't mess with the fan speeds so far, but the standard profile is a bit loud. I probably won't OC for now, there is simply no need with this performance.

Eh, not impressed. I'll stick with my current card.

Man I used to love Canopus cards. Had the Pure 3d , then after, the Pure 3d II x 2 in my first SLI setup back in the day.

Ordered a EVGA GTX 980 superclocked. Just waiting to receive my confirmation from NCIX. Knowing my luck, their website lied and they are already out of stock.

Too bad the Gigabyte isn't included in this review.

Can't wait to see a big roundup of all models.

Guru3D compared the MSI Gaming and Gigabyte Windforce, so it's probably safe to say since the MSI is beating all the others at Bit-Tech and the Gigabyte is handily beating the MSI at Guru, the Gigabyte's likely the best of the lot as far as cooling is concerned (possibly significantly).

Well I'm starting to see these cards show up on Canadian retailers but the prices are ridiculous...$420 for a 970?!

Yeah, I could import two EVGA 970s from Amazon for AUD$752 all up whereas the very same pair from a popular local retailer would cost me a grand. Gotta love the Aussie Tax!

Just overclock the EVGA card, assuming you bought one of the ACX models.

I was in a hurry to grab one this morning - seeing how quickly they sold out at Amazon - and went for the model most like the EVGA 670 I currently have. since I've been happy with it.

Overclocking wasn't really on my mind when I made the purchase. If I can legitimately get a significant performance gain from it, though, I may reconsider. All other times I've tried overclocking a graphics card, I haven't found it to really be worth the trouble.

From a 760 with a 1920x1200 24 inch monitor to a 970 plus a 27-32 1440p monitor

I do NOT generally play FPS games.

Seems wise? , nope

The upgrade devil inside me is strong, must continute to evalute.

Reading the Guru3D review for the 970 Windforce and they were able to apply a 200 Mhz OC to an already higher core clock.

Looks like they were able to achieve quite the performance gains, getting better scores than a stock 980.

Would I need extra cooling to OC that much with the GPU?

obviously I don't know how the cards are going to scale, since no one appears to have tested 3 way sli with the 980, but the main reason I went three way is that three way is meant to *drastically* reduce micro stuttering (when compared to two)... and hopefully they'll actually scale pretty well too.

these things will be driving a ROG Swift (so 1440p at 144HZ) and hopefully my overclocked (to 4.7 GHz) 5930K will give them plenty of room to do what they need to do.

loads of unknowns right now, naturally, but this PC upgrade budget is about two years in the making. wish me luck!

I have Tri-SLi and a ROG Swift

You'll find that Gsync kind of makes that much GPU power unnecessary. But at the same time Tri-SLi is pretty awesome
when it works
. Congrats! What is your spacing like by the way? Mine looks like this:

That middle card gets really hot. This will probably impact your boost clock. The clock starts to go down when it gets over 80c and with this kind of setup it will get there in no time. Ideally you want to put them under water to maximize their full potential.

Just giving you a heads up on what to expect. Will still be good times for you :)

You mean like a waterblock? TMK, 970 waterblocks are gonna be a PITA due to lack of reference design.

Overclocking that much is mostly a situation of accepting a certain noise level. That would probably be unacceptable for most folks, keeping that in check.

Anyone knows if there are any 2560x1080 benchmarks out there for these cards? I know that the performance can be estimated by looking for the middle ground of the 1080p and 1440p performances but it would still be nice to have some actual benchmarks to go by.

I almost bought a 290 the other day. Thank the heavens I didn't.

Especially with the OC, the 970 & 980 are bananas. The 970 for $329 is a damn steal, trading the 290 with the updated efficiency. It will be mine.

Just to add to this, after turning up my case fans a bit (from the lowest possible settings) things got better. Not really worried about the temps, but I guess it's the price you pay for SLI... More ventilation required.

In Greece, the 970 will probably cost 400 euros or something...

I'm still getting this card but i'll probably have to wait for another generation for the prices to drop.

Welp, thanks to you guys. I decided to pull the plug and cancel my Amazon order of this item, and instead go with Newegg's in stock version that people linked here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...p=&AID=10446076&PID=6149513&SID=199cenavxlt8m

In the end I won't save that much money though thanks to damn taxes in my state, though there is a rebate.

Still, all things considered, did I make the right call? Aside from getting it sooner, is this card maybe a better one than the one on Amazon? (It does have ACX and the speeds look slightly higher)

Man 2 day Shoprunner shipping from an order at midnight, tracking showing not till the 23rd. Figured it was Monday at latest. I miss Amazon Prime.

Sad that people still continue to use synth benches .. smh.

Almost every GPU thread the past year or so was filled with "Well I'm still happy with my 670, so I can wait" comments, me included.

It seems 670 owners can finally stop waiting. :)

Even from my overclocked 680 the jump to an overclocked 970 was pretty damn good. And the extra 2GB of RAM sure is nice.

Wow, I can finally play Metro2033 (original version) with advanced DOF and 4xMSAA with something like ~80-120 fps average. Feels like coming full circle. (Enough boasting now, but if you guys want any specific tests, let me know).

Just for reference, here's my GTX670 w/3570k(back at stock 3.4Ghz for the moment) with 1080p/max settings/FXAA:

Pretty big. I remember TressFX really killing my performance on a 680. Maxwell doesn't really seem to care.

I am on a 3770K @ 4,4.

IKR? i've been GPU less for almost a month as i sold both my 560ti for 100each. I've been chomping at the bit to get a replacement and i was THIS close to getting a R9 290. SOOOOOOO glad i didnt. Asus 970 is already on order and it was barely 150 out of pocket. CANT WAIT

It's about time! This is the first card that offers a substantial upgrade in raw performance, performance/watt, and performance/$ over the 670. It's amazing they could do all this with the same old 28nm process.

I ordered straight from EVGA, and they seem to be calling everyone who ordered the 970 to confirm information. Just got my call, and my card is on the way.

Do you mind doing some single card benches?

8:30ish this morning at Newegg. East coast also.
The order finally went through. Hoping for a Monday delivery :)

I have a GTX 580 and while it's been good to me, I feel that it's almost time to send it to that nice farm upstate. Should I pull the trigger?

For reference, I did a Haswell build last October but cannibalized my 580. i7 4770k, 32GB DDR3 1866 RAM, etc.
