Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

If you plan on going SLI, worth noting that there's no good blower-style coolers for the 970. One of the reasons why I went 980. Not sure if they plan on coming out with a Titan-style cooler for the 970 later, but it doesn't look like it.

In my experience the open air coolers don't work as well in SLI because the bottom card heats up the top considerably, on average results in 10C higher temps.
I've heard that PNY has a 970 with a reference style cooler.

I take it as a rule cards that have the 2 traditional type fans are quieter than the cards that have the single intake turbine type fan?

Has somebody gone from a 7950 to a 970? I'm probably going to wait for AMD's response and maybe the post-holiday sales but that 970 is looking mighty tempting.

Stock cooler on the EVGA GTX 780 SC.

Vid of the noise from the GTX 970 - here

That is an odd sound and yes that would annoy the hell out of me. I've gotta crank up my speakers or put on headphones when my current card cranks up. It sounds like a turbo charger.

This may sound dumb but did you make sure you took off that protective thin piece of plastic off the card? There's usually 3 pieces. One on the card itself and 2 in the center of the fans.

I'll let you know what the Gigabyte 970 sounds like when I get it.

Edit - What does it sound like at full load?

I think it depends on your case - if your case is tight or has poor airflow, the open design of a dual fan cooler can kick heat around your case, resulting in an overall temperature build-up inside and the fans will go nuts. With a closed design cooler that kicks the heat out of the back of the case, you're less likely to get heat build-up inside and the fan noise is potentially going to be quieter/more consistent. But the bigger, dual fans you get on the open designs are usually more efficient at cooling, so if you're got good overall airflow through your case, these are probably better.

I just ordered the MSI 970 (upgrading from my 570) and have a quick question - the card requires a 6 pin and an 8 pin for power. My current card requires two 6 pins, and I don't appear to have an 8 pin, however one of my current connectors is a 6+2 pin. Will that be sufficient, or do I need a connector/different psu?

6+2 is the same as an 8 pin connector. The only difference is that you can use it for both. You'll be fine. All of my current video card power cables are 6+2.

That 6+2 is just what you need for 8-pin.

Wonderful. I was fully expecting for my PSU to screw me over, good to hear that it's alright.

Now we play the waiting game. I was hoping MicroCenter would have these in stock so I could just drive out and buy, but they sold out (plus it was the EVGA one and I don't want that loud fan noise). It's a shame since I've had nothing go wrong with my evga 570 and like the brand.

Hmmm, I want that 980, but I'm not sure whether I need to upgrade my CPU first. I have an i7-2600 @3.40Hz. What do you guys think, will the CPU be a bottleneck?

(I do my PC gaming at 1080p mostly, but if I get this card I will eventually buy a monitor to go higher resolutions)

Yep all the plastic is off. At full load I'd say it's on par with a gtx 780 or even less. I suspect the issue is with the card.

It sounds like something is making contact or rubbing. Possibly a bad bearing?

Call up or email EVGA. I've always had a great experience with their customer service. I had an issue with one of their cards and they RMA'd a new one out to me next day without having to send in the old one. They gave me a return label and I just put the old one in the box and shipped it out when I got the new card.

I hope you can get the same service that I did.

Difference between 770 and 780 is bigger. 970 is just a slightly neutered 980. 770 is a different chip altogether from the 780.

But anyways, performance gap is there, but is an extra 10% performance worth spending 75% more money on?
See, this information is useful, not pedantic :P

I caved a went for MSI GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr. Should be a decent upgrade from 670. Hopefully I can get somewhere around £130 for it on ebay.

I guess I'll just pick which cheaper it is between the two.

Yeah.. I wanted the Asus card (because I've been very happy with my current 660 Ti from Asus), but when I saw it was not in stock until next week I started looking into the MSI card (which I ordered yesterday)

The conclusion (that I read..) from the two reviews I read was that the noise level was really good on both, and just about the same (I think the Asus card was ~0.5dB less than the MSI).

The difference was that the MSI card was a tiny bit faster, was a little bit cooler, but drew about 6-7 watts more during max load.

Here's one of the comparisons (there are more, but don't remember where)

http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/562...ncl-ultra-hd-test-asus-vs-msi-geforce-gtx-970

OK, now I am looking only into blow type 970s for SLI (don't want to risk heating up my brother's internal components with all that sweet sweet maxwell heat).

Beyond PNY and EVGA, are there really any other blower type 970s? I wish the AIB partners designed high end bower type fans (like the titan coolers).

How is this possible, if all the specs appear identical? Why is it drawing more power? What is this sorcery?

Waited for these card to upgrade my GTX 580 from.

Few questions:

So sounds like 970 is better atm price wise because 980 doesn't increase that much, is that future proof too though?

What's the max temp and how far away are they from reaching them? I didn't see a max temp yet, I'm asking because my 580 had a shitty fan and can go to 90 degrees Celsius even when I'm playing Dota 2..

Are they giving away a new game with it? Would be a nice incentive haha.

I normally just play all my games in 1080 and go for max settings when possible, my 580 still does a decent job but I really wanna max out Witcher 3, Asscreed Unity, Arkham Knight and when the Rift comes out be able to use that without lag. 970 or 980 with that in mind?

2 970s if you want the rift and witcher 3 to run better

Have waterblocks been released in conjunction with the new cards?

Edit: After 30 seconds of looking around there only seems to be 980 blocks.

Somebody asked early, and I was kinda hoping somebody had an answer - would there be any problem with going with one blower-type card(and have that on top) and then have the lower card with a more typical aftermarket solution?

How is this possible, if all the specs appear identical? Why is it drawing more power? What is this sorcery?
I think its just peak figures, so the MSI test run might have just had that tiny bit bigger spike somewhere?

Rift, but only if VR SLI really works without problems for VR.

Any impression of VR Sli somewhere already?
We don't really have much news about that and how it works specifically. I'm not sure it just automatically 'works', ya know? Might require extra work on the developer's end. Or maybe even from Oculus' end?

1) The 980 has a 5-10fps edge on the 970, but it's 200$ more. If you buy an overclocked 970 (most of the non reference versions are oveclocked), that gap gets smaller. I think the Gigabyte G1 970 does the same as a stock 980.
2) From the benchmarks I've seen, the cards with a decent cooler (read: Non stock cooler), are fine. The limit should be 90°C, most cards sit at 70°C at max load.
3) No games, sadly. They don't really need any incentive, the price/perfomance ratio is incredible. :lol

Dunno about the last, don't hold your hopes up for Unity, because Ubisoft. The Witcher 3 I think will probably give the 980 a run for its money too.

Fan noise doesn't bother me, I guess it's because of how loud the PS3 and Xbox 360 could get, even when my fan blows at like 80%, it's still not as loud as they were. I have a profile set to never let my GPU get above 70 degrees. Is that low?

I toyed with impulsing buying one of these last night and selling my current OC 780.

Then I realized that would be rather silly as my current monitor is only 1080p anyway and I can pretty much max out every game at that resolution.

Maybe I should look at one of those fancy Vsync monitors next year instead of a new graphics card though.

70°C degrees it's fine. Keep in mind that the refence cards can easily go up to 80°C without much stress.

Bear in mind the 980 overclocks too, and from what I've seen it does so very well. There's only reference cards around here, though...I guess an aftermarket cooler could be an option down the line.

Personally I'm really interested in the gigabyte 970, and I could probably get one, but the price makes no fucking sense.

Man these benchmarks are unimpressive, Maxwell didn't change much, did it? :(

It's a much more efficient part. It's outperforming Keplar with less silicon and much lower power draw. If we get a Titan or 980 Ti out of Maxwell, you can bet it'll show a sizable advantage over the Titan Black and 780 Ti, since the 980 is already comfortably outperforming them.

Obviously that also means good things for laptops, small form factors and mobile devices which ARE going to get a huge bump from Maxwell... but yeah, at the high end it's only a small step forwards if we just look at rendering power.

Ordered a ASUS Strix GTX 970. I'll get another in a month or less. Goodbye, GTX 670.

Efficiency has greatly improved GREATLY and the mobile platform has been blown out of the water. There's nothing that even comes close to the 980m or 970m. Also, a mid range card almost performing as good or in some instances even better than a 780ti is just awesome for non-reference cards..

Maxwell really raised the stakes for mobile gaming though.

Yeah I know, but I don't know, I just can't justify spending 550$ for a 980. Speaking for myself here. :lol

I take it as a rule cards that have the 2 traditional type fans are quieter than the cards that have the single intake turbine type fan?

surface size of the heatsink (more surface area for the fan to blow over = more effective cooling)
material of the heatsink (copper conducts heat better than aluminium)
size of the fan (bigger fan = lower rpm for the same airflow)
quality of the fan (no noisy bearing)
are what terermine the noise a cooler make.

Those little turbine type fans spin fast and are placed next to the heatsink leaving less space to put a bigger heatsink.

Compare to an non reference or aftermarkettwin frozr heatsink
The heatsink covers the entire length of the card, there are more blades, there are some heatpipes to help spread the heat over the entire heatsink.
Now if you put 2 90 or 100mm fans on such a heatsink you can run them at 500 rpm-800rpm with a fan profile ,maybe even have them off when the card is idle.
Much quieter than that amd reference turbine fan screaming at 1500 rpm

Or you can get a heatsink designed for one 120mm fan like
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/attachments/photo-2013-05-17-07-49-44-pm-jpg.51675/
Which you can then run even slower

Hell if you put a big enough heatsink that starts to look more like a car radiator on there you don't even need fans
http://i.imgur.com/jI1xl.jpg

If you want a quiet card you want one with the biggest heatsink you can get and big quality fans combined with a conservative fan profile that'll let your card stay at 70-80 degrees rather than an agressive one that'll ramp up the fans just to cool it to 60 or below

Is evga the only place to get the double fanned evga 980? Because the only place I saw it for sale was on their site at launch and those sold out right away.

So many people are going with 970's. The 908 is being left in the cold. I love the reference blower but as much as I want to buy a couple. I want to wait for some 8 GB models
