Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Has anybody had experience with Zotac? I'm seeing some decent deals on their 970 preorder here in Brazil.

My old GTX 260 was a Zotac and I had no issues in the three years I used it. I think at that point they offered a 5 year warranty here in the UK, but I never had to use it since no problems arose.

I think i am going to get a 980 despite the 4GB Ram :D
Does anyone know which vendor offers the best cooling solution? Nothing fancy like watercooling though, just the best active cooling solution.

I used my 580 AMP2 edition for 3 years now, did some overclocking and did not run into any problems. Temps can reach 80+ but overall it is a very solid card! So from my pov they are a solid vendor. I have no idea what the generel opinion is though.

The Gigabyte G1 seems to be the undisputed best cooler by a pretty wide margin based on the reviews I've seen, but it's also the most expensive.

Is evga the only place to get the double fanned evga 980? Because the only place I saw it for sale was on their site at launch and those sold out right away.

That I've seen so far, yeah. More will follow though, naturally. One plus about going SLI with the 980s is that right now, the reference blower is really the only valid choice if we're talking SLI. It made decision making pretty easy.

2500K owners sure seem to unnecessarily worry a lot. The New PC thread is even named after that trait!

I think it's because we can't believe it's really lasting this long without needing to upgrade. :p

So newegg sold out of the MSI 970 in the time it took me to call the post office to get an address to get the thing sold to and before I finished completing the checkout I was in the middle of, so the card poofed from cart. Despair everywhere.

They say there should be more in stock on the 23rd, but how likely is that?

That's a chip a lot of people, like me, that only really research things when we need an upgrade and don't really keep in the loop, went with. Therefore I think a lot of us just really don't know what's come out since.

Getting mine in on Monday as well. :P

My 970s should be arriving Monday or Tuesday, but I'm building a whole new machine around them. It is tempting to throw at least one in my current 7970 machine while I wait for the rest of my parts to arrive but it's probably more hassle than it's worth.

Bah, my MSI 970s from Newegg won't get here until Friday. Thankfully I'll be off work that day and won't have to be paranoid about the delivery.

I really wish I could justify buying a GTX 980. That thing makes my mouth water, would be such an upgrade from my 2GB 670. I'm barely playing PC games--hell games in-general--enough to really consider it. But god, the allure of hardware is so strong. Still want to just impulse buy one, lol. Goddammit.

Edit: Hmmm, maybe I should consider the 970 . . . seems like a lot of people here are going with it. I might be able justify buying the 970 . . .

Bought the Gigabyte GTX 970.

I'll probably slap my 670 in my old Alienware Aurora I've been piecing back together. Maybe put it in the living room, and hook it up to the TV.

I'll get the 960 when that releases. Currently got a 560 in my PC, been holding off for a few generations, definitely didn't plan on buying the 760 this year when I knew that a new one was bound to be announced.

So many people are going with 970's. The 908 is being left in the cold. I love the reference blower but as much as I want to buy a couple. I want to wait for some 8 GB models
It looks like the 980 only exists to make the 970 look like a bargain. It's a really disappointing GPU for the price they're charging.

The EVGA is not exactly super quiet under load, but it is very quiet in idle (make a custom fan profile for the card though). But I never expected super low noises for SLI in my small Fractal case. I don't have that weird coil whine issue the guy on Youtube has. Overall I am super happy with it, paid 90€ less than for the other stockoverclocked cards. Package deal of 2 cards, EVGA SLI bridge and Borderlands = 620€. 8TFLOPS for that price is quite the deal.

Anyway, back to playing. :p

The cooling is sufficient though right?

Getting 2 non-reference cards for SLI is making me nervous. My blower 660's from EVGA have been flawless but I'm now reading lots of horror stories about the ACX coolers in SLI :/ ...

It was definitely sufficient already, but I moved a 120 case fan that was blowing air in from the bottom to the side. Now it's blowing on the cards and it has improved temps even more. I am getting something like 71 degrees max under full load with a custom profile in my well ventilated small case. (That is with all the case fans operating at the lowest possible RPM with fan control)

My CPU (i7 920 at stock 2,66ghz) is probably too slow to work these cards efficiently, right? Not sure whether to upgrade some parts (really want to get rid of my AMD 5770), or whether to wait a while more, and to then buy a completely new rig.

Haven't ever overclocked, but perhaps overclocking the CPU a bit could also be an option.

So yeah, I returned my 770 I purchased last week to Amazon (unopened) and they just sent me a key for borderlands presequel for the purchase...um ok...thanks I guess?

71 degrees sounds good enough to me! These cards only start throttling at over 80 so that's nothing to worry about. Mind sharing a screenshot of your custom profile?

I have a HAF XB case so there are 2 fans blowing directly onto my GPU's. Hopefully I should be ok.

Just hoping it'll fit in my relatively older Coolermaster case comfortably enough. Specs say it can fit a 304mm card and Tom's Hardware measures the Gigabyte 970 from front panel to end at 297mm, so we'll see.

I'll probably buy a new case soon enough, regardless.

Any smaller cards? Seems like a bit if a waste when power consumption is so low to make all cards the same size as a Titan :/

The 920 has a ton of overclocking headroom. 4Ghz is possible with a good cooler.

Sorry to quote myself, but I didn't get any responses. Would appreciate some input, particularly as I've only ever (by happenstance of time/budget at build times) been using AMD. Not very up on how good SLI is.

Damn, I can't believe the 7970 Ghz has been out for two years already.

As someone running two in Crossfire, but seeing no real performance gains in real life applications (only in benchmarks like 3D Mark), I'm really left struggling about what to grab from this new crop of cards.

It's left me gun shy on multiple GPU setups, but on the other hand, with a relatively narrow margin in performance but a big one in price, I'm torn on whether to grab 2x 970s or 1 980... and then maybe another in the future?

I also currently have a PCIe 3 x16/x8 motherboard, so not sure how much that will impact which I should pick.

Would love some advice or thoughts. I love to crank most settings to 11 and shoot for 1080p60, though I'm starting to dabble in down sampling. I also want as much VRAM as possible for Skyrim modding.

You're leaving a huge amount of performance on the table by not over clocking. A 3.4ghz+ i7 920 is still a very capable gaming CPU and a good match for a GTX 970.

Pic of my setup:
Bottom fan has been moved to the side since I took the pic. I am probably not going to replace it.

Fan profile (Will probably see some small tweaks with experience)

I know people say that when going from one Nvidia card to another you don't have to do any messing around with drivers, just a straight swap. I've had minor problems in the past when doing that, though.

I'm kind of a Windows noob. Use it strictly for gaming.

What's the best way to completely remove all drivers/whatever else there is associated with my current Nvidia card?

And second question, would I do a complete removal of drivers/everything, then power down, take out the old card, put in the new one (Gigabyte 970), and then install the new drivers once the card is in?

Thanks in advance! I helplessly rely on you guys for this kind of stuff, so it's much appreciated! :D
