Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Is the only downside to EVGA the noise? That's a complete non-factor to me because my HTPC is in the basement. Would really like to finally upgrade from 560ti to 970.

I don't quite understand. Why would you be able to buy those games earlier when buying the card now instead of later? Put the money aside and it won't matter, it's not like it'll disappear all by itself. Also the cards could become cheaper.

I can't really justify spending 500€ in videogames to my mother. :lol

Pretty much. The only other factors being if you care about the quality of PCB components (for overclocking) and video output configurations.

I'm still running a Core i5 2500 with a motherboard that only supports PCI-E 2.0. Will this bottleneck a GTX 970 at all yet, or am I still good?
I'm using a GTX 670 right now, and this looks like it'd be a pretty noticeable upgrade.

PCIe 2.0 isn't an issue.

Hehe, okay, reasonable explanation. You could preorder Witcher 3 right now to get that out of the way, maybe even find it cheaper via a trader but I'm not sure about the region-lock situation. When that will be possible with GTAV no one knows unfortunately.

Good, lots of people with a 2500 are upgrading. If you've got a K overclock it because why not.

I just realized that during Christmas I'm bound to make at least 50€ from lazy (in this case lazyiness is good lol) relatives, so I'll use those to buy one game free of parental worry. :lol

Too bad I don't have more lazy relatives.

You're absolutely golden.

Read this and realize how little CPU actually has to do with gaming performance nowadays. 2500k is still a beast especially with when overclocked.

That is what I plan on doing. Wife "ok'd" a rebuild for next year, so I am going to wait it out for bit. I game on a 4k Set, so need something with a bit more Vram and a bit more power.

I am on a 1440p monitor, but want to grab one of those 21:9 displays. I figure even a 980 is not enough for a smooth framerate at 3440x1440 for some of next years titles.

It only seems to matter at higher resolutions and in SLI setups.

I find the continued paranoia of 2500K owners hilarious.

The 970 might finally be the card that switches me over from red to green. Maybe I'll wait a tick longer to see what AMD counters with..

Looks like I'm going to get ~$200 from selling my two 5850s and a 25" monitor I don't use anymore. Can't wait.

Would it be possible to run the 970 on a single 6-pin? The nvidia page says 145W so it should be theoretically possible I think?

If the card has two pins, it needs two pins, I'd say.
Most card are overclocked, too. If you look at the reviews, those use around 180W at peak.

How much does a used 2GB 680 go for? Not expecting much but I have a Twin Frozr that will probably collect dust if I don't post it for sale by the time my shipment arrives.

Just how long are the Gigabyte G1 970s? I was surprised to just see claims of it being over 12 inches long, didn't expect it to be longer than my Windforce 780. My Phantom 410 only has clearance for up to 12" cards... before removing 4 of my HDD slots, anyway.

No one getting a 980? Is it pretty much pointless?

It is not pointless, it just offers less value than a 970. You can get a 980 if for some reason you really want the fastest card and SLI 970 isn't an option (if you don't like SLI, and there can be good reasons not to like it, or if your case doesn't allow for SLI), and you don't have a problem paying a sizeable premium for that.

the 970 has enough bandwidth, enough ram and enough power to make the 980 irrelevant IMO. Unless your looking to sli 980s to get a super high end experience, i don't recommend the 980 over the 70...the price to performance and efficiency ratio is just right for the second tier card

12.3 inches, or 31.2cm. Pretty long :P

I have one pre-ordered, still waiting on NCIX to get their shipment in. It's pretty shit value but after dealing with AMD's awful Crossfire support, I'm turned off of dual-gpu solutions -- even though I know SLI is less problematic.

Plus when I do a full upgrade on my PC, it will be to a mini-ITX case so no room for 2 cards anyways. I tend to follow Linus's advice now -- buy the fastest single GPU card you can afford.

Pretty much.

I personally think these are in a rather odd position though for anyone looking at a new card with something relatively recent (Kepler up), as going off assumed time frames/speculation, the full (GM200/210) card is going to be here in ~6 months. If we consider the next big PC game (Witcher 3) is coming early next-year I'd be inclined to hold out for now.

Thanks for the comments and details on the 980!

The reason I asked is because I have a 680, which has been great for me. So I just assumed I would upgrade to the next x80 card, but then I was surprised to see no one in this thread really getting it.

I just upgraded to a 970 and I'm running an i7920@4ghz. I see no need to upgrade my cpu, for at least a few more years.

Nice, I actually just installed an i7 920 chip I picked up for cheap on ebay in my old Alienware Aurora. Imma slap the 670 in there when I get my Gigabyte 970, and have another decent rig.

Rocking the 980x in my main rig still, going to ride LGA 1366 till the wheels fall off.

If you can afford it, it seems fine. For anyone concerned with value per dollar though, it's hard to beat the 970.
