Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

So just swapped out my 570 for the 970 without changing any drivers and after rebooting it says it can't identify any Nvidia graphics card. Have I dun goofed?

I felt the same way. After much internal debating that I could not justify the upgrade for $329, due to the fact I don't upgrade unless a part is dead, I pulled the trigger. I was also hoping to wait it out until Pascal, but with some backlog of games that would take advantage of the new processing power and future games (Witcher 3, Arkham Knight) I caved.

Maybe I will feel buyers remorse if AMD comes out with a 20nm product that overshoots the 970/980 on Wednesday (pure speculation on my part), but I figured such a card would not fall into the $300-$400 price range.
Hmm, change my mind. I'm going to wait to see what AMD has first.

I'd probably run DDU (display driver uninstaller) in safe mode if I was in your position and then try and reinstall the latest driver.

weird seeing how you don't even need to restart to update drivers anymore.

try uninstalling them, rebooting and see if windows gives you a generic then update from there.

Hmm still the same issue, it just says generic video card. Maybe it's because I am trying to use slightly older drivers? I'm download 344.16 to see if they can recognise it.

EDIT: that fixed it, guess 340.72 were too old.

Yeah, the 344.16 11 drivers introduced support for the 970 and 980.

I kinda doubt AMD can get to 20nm faster than Nvidia, since both makers are constrained by TSMC's process.

You sure 344.11 doesn't have support? I have a GIGABYTE 970 arriving tomorrow and am downloading the drivers from their support page in preparation. Kinda curious why it's like 516MB from GIGABYTE's site and I think only ~230 on Nvidia's.

I'm nervous as I've had driver issues when upgrading Nvidia cards in the past.

Oh, they're the ones I'm thinking of, haha.

Didn't realise Nvidia already pushed out a new beta.

Why don't you just download the drivers directly from Nvidia? I haven't used a manufacturer's driver in . . . well, I can't even remember anymore.

Good question. I'll use Nvidia's .I just built this in March, first foray into PC gaming. I say I've had trouble upgrading cards in the past because I used EVGA's Step-up program.

FT02 SLI discussion --

I used a FT02 a few cases back. I had numerous GPU setups in the FT02. The only time I had temp issues is when I used two GTX 580 Lightning Editions. The way the heat pipes worked on those cards goes against the design of the FT02. I think Silverstone says this in their manual. When I moved on from the FT02 and into the Corsair 500r, my temps immediately improved on the cards. The setup worked in the FT02, but it wasn't ideal.

I would try and stay away from that EVGA 970 blower. It is out of date and I'm not sure why they are using it.

I'm seriously pondering getting one of these (Asus STRIX 970):

Does anyone out there have one of these yet? 0RPM mode and a nice cooler seem like awesome bullet points.

A good review of that card. Basically a good card if you don't like noise. As long as the card is under 67c it doesn't have the fans on which means stuff like blu-ray playback and idle browsing results in a much quieter PC.

Hoping some more variants of the 970 are available in Canada this week. And preferably not ridiculously overpriced, I want the Gigabyte one but no way am I paying $450 for it.

OT question: is it normal than my gamma goes super dark as overtime I upsample the resolution in a game?

I had this issue with downsampling, I think it's related to using HDMI or using a TV as a monitor (the latter being my case). Had to change from RGB color format for it to look right.

Yeah I'm using a Panasonic plasma as my display. Which option is that to change?

I was thinking that any cooler where the majority of the pipes wont be vertical (like the windforce) would be bad. I was thinking the MSI with the Frozr would be ok since most of the pipes wouldn't be.. But since the Lightning Edition used a similar setup im back to square one of thinking i need a blower.

or just suck it up and get two 980's.. but $1100 dammit

Get a single Twin Frozr and check out the temps. If they are good enough for you, look into a second. $1100 is a big jump from two 970s especially if you weren't really looking to pick up 980s in the first place. The Lightnings worked fine in the FT02, I just had to be mindful of temps. This was also before Nvidia introduced Boost 2.0 and temp throttling so I'm sure it's easier to manage now.

Getting two 980s right now would be throwing money down the toilet. There's really no game that would utilize all of that extra power, and by the time there is, you can get a card with similar power that would actually utilize that power for much cheaper.

That's not true at all if you game at high resolutions.

Hmmm... you guys are making me nervous about whether my NZXT H440 will be able to handle the heat of 2 970's.

Don't be. Us FT02 owners have a strange case where everything is rotated and exhaust is dependent on one 120mm fan.

It's not that the case can't handle heat since it's still one of the best air cooling cases on the market. It's that the orientation can potentially make heatpipes ineffective.

Ah, I just looked it up and I can see why there might be a problem... That exhaust situation does seem tricky for GPU's.

False.

Eh, why? So what blower is it? Is it not the Titan style blower?

Interested in the 980, is there a definitive guide to which brand one should get?

So far I know (think) gigabytes have the best cooling, EVGA has the best customer service, what say you?
